1. Education Projects for disadvantage children and youth

Our objective is to support children and youth most affected by the war. The aim of our education projects is to motivate these children, provide them with the ability and resources to be qualified in their chosen profession, be instrumental in assisting employment for others and to help rebuild our nation.

At present students are being supported by educational scholarships, the supply of basic nutritional needs and the provision of books and stationary needed for their education. Our aim is to concurrently provide livelihood facility for them so that in time they will be in a position to self-fund their studies and reduce their dependency.

2. Development projects

Our main objective is to focus on the disadvantaged, disabled and people who were affected by the war and who are living below the poverty line. We believe giving handouts alone does not help people overcome their current situation. With this in mind, we have been focusing on exploring their talents and strengths and then providing them with the opportunity to become self-sufficient. With this aim in mind our projects focus on providing water, soil, plants and animal husbandry in order to for people to generate a sustainable income.

Some of our results: 142 residents benefitted from these projects in 2016. 92 residents who were on a base income of 3,000 RS have managed to raise their income to 10,000 RS 24 residents rose from a base income of 5,000 RS to 15,000 RS 22 residents rose from a base income of 7,000 RS to 20,000 RS If such projects are to be implemented on an even larger scale in the Vanni region it is our hope and dream that we could help abolish poverty altogether in Vanni.

Dr Malathi Waran's views on the transformation of Vanni by women's empowerment

In 2017 I had the opportunity to spend 5 months in Sri Lanka. I chose to spend a good proportion of that time in Malayalapuram and was able to observe the enthusiasm, dedication and passion of the KKM-Vanni Hope staff as they set out to help transform the lives of families. Most of the assistance was directed towards women headed families in very remote villages in Vanni. The changes one could see within a very short period, often as little as 6 months, was amazing and heartwarming. The following is a brief account of the stories of two women I met. They recount their past, explain how they are managing now, and share their hopes and dreams. What struck me most was the motivation, perseverance and drive of each of them exhibited in the face of significant setbacks. What they have achieved in a short few years is truly inspiring.

Ranjithkumar Emiladevi had a small vegetable garden that perished during the drought in 2015. Within 2 years of getting married, her husband died. All on her own she had to support her infant and her parents. KKM -Vanni Hope built a tube well with a water storage tank for this family in 2016. KKM – Vanni Hope also provided cashew, jackfruit, drumstick plants, and 20 chickens. Emiladevi herself planted snake-beans, snake-gourd, bitter-gourd, tapioca and pumpkin. She estimates an income of

500 RS to 1,000 RS per month from her poultry farm alone and an income of 8,000 RS to 10,000 RS per month from the sale of her vegetables. She feels this income is more than sufficient for the needs of the family. She says she is now in a position to use the excess income to buy fertilizer, insecticides and more seedlings and is determined to expand further.

3. Spiritual development project for resettlement community

Although education and livelihoods are essential for survival, these alone are insufficient in raising the spiritual wellness of our community. Spirituality by instilling ethics, morality and code of conduct is essential for the emotional and spiritual wellbeing of a community.

With this in mind we are involved in resurrecting damaged and neglected temples by empowering and motivating the local community with financial assistance to rebuild and help with the resumption of worship. With the donation of 691 local families, contributing what they could along with money raised by Vanni Hope the Varasithi Vinayagar temple has been fully reconstructed and is now a functioning temple.

To instill in children the concept that religion is not merely worship but a prescribed way of life, we have commenced Araneri schools on Sundays and hope to raise the spiritual wellbeing of these children. 42 children attend these classes. Nutritious food is supplied to these children on the day and 2 teachers are employed.

To encourage and develop the spiritual wellbeing of our youth, Ramar bhajan is conducted. About 60 to 70 youth are involved in Ramar bhajan where they gather and sing bhajans weekly at the local temple. Over the months of November, December and January bhajans are sung daily, initiating at the temple and progressing along the roads to individual homes.

The community is very grateful to Shiyam Sunder & his wife Meera for supporting this spiritual development work.

4. Community coordination projects

Staff of KKM and Vanni Hope are employed at three levels – as office staff, field workers and as community workers. 5. Youth’s skill development through Sports activities.

We aim to promote the sporting talents of our youth both at schools and clubs. Children here have been deprived of the opportunity to compete at the national level over the past 40 years. For the first-time Battle of Vanni was initiated where 21 clubs competed in a cricket tournament. This was done in association with the Kilinochchi cricket association. On account of this venture the Kilinochchi cricket association has been recognized by the national cricket board. Consequently, Kilinochchi cricket association now has a standing in the cricket board of the Northern province.

The grounds of New Bharathy sports club are in the process of being redeveloped. The youth of this club have been significantly affected by the war and are underprivileged. This facility will be of immense help in boosting the morale of these youth. Cricket practice nets have already been completed and work is in progress for the development of the cricket grounds and the boundary wall.

12 clubs have been issued with cricket kits and it is hoped this will enhance their cricket practice, games and tournaments.

Support of the New South Wales Tamil sports club has been immensely valuable in this venture.

6) Community education & literature development projects

With the hope of reviving our heritage, further developing our Tamil culture and instilling our time honored and valuable traditions in our society, we have conducted a number of workshops. Children who have participated have composed poetry, songs and story writing, and have been encouraged with certificates and awards. A book titled "Latchiyam" has been published. We hope to continue to transmit the knowledge of our past leaders, our heritage and culture to today's children.

The contribution of Vanni Hope has been invaluable in this mission.

7. Project coordination, implementation, evaluation and reporting

It is our determination that every single action taken by this association be honest, honorable and beyond reproach. Every measure is taken to make our dealings as transparent as possible.

We encourage direct communication between our sponsors and beneficiaries, be it via letters, phone calls or personal visits. We have ensured an internationally recognized auditor has access to all our records.

By following this code of conduct we hope to positively influence the lives of not just a fraction but of the entirety of the war affected community. We wish to extend our sincere gratitude to each and every sponsor who has managed to touch the lives of our beneficiaries.

Our special thanks for the coordination and dedication of Ranjan Sivagnanasundram for their valuable and tireless work. We wish to thank all the Vanni Hope donors who have contributed to our projects. Finally our most sincere and heartfelt thanks goes to our untiring field staff for their dedication and hard work to improve the lives of war affected communities.
