Jeremiah Peacock, Named Linden Student Scholar Jeremiah Peacock, Class of 2017, received the Linden Student Scholar Junior Award on November 15. The Greater Linden Development Corporation announced that Jeremiah was selected from a pool of nominees who attend school in the Linden neighborhood and show a deep commitment for their education. This past summer, Jeremiah was one of 40 KIPPsters across the country selected to participate in the KIPP STEP program at the prestigious Deerfield Academy, a boarding school in Massachusetts. The program is designed to prepare KIPPsters for top tier, private high schools. While at Deerfield, Jeremiah participated in rigorous English, science, and math classes. Jeremiah is known as a leader and model of excellent character at KIPP Journey Academy. Ms. Lynnly Wood, 5th Grade Reading Teacher, was named Teacher of the Year by the Ohio Alliance of Public Charter Schools this October. Ms. Wood is in her third year teaching reading at KJA and previously taught for two years at KIPP Believe in New Orleans and taught for nine years at Columbus City Schools. Ms. Wood has made a significant impact on the reading growth and achievement of student at KJA. She provides targeted and differentiated reading instruction to KJA students daily. Ms. Wood is currently motivating her students to read as many hours as they can each day in a reading marathon. We value Ms. Wood’s dedication to our students. Congratulations, Ms. Wood. We are proud to announce that Jeremiah Peacock was named the Linden 2012 Junior Youth Scholar! Jeremiah was recognized at the Linden Celebration and Gratitude Awards ceremony!

Attention all 2017 families who have a student applying to a private or charter school! All applications were given out on Tuesday, Nov. 20. Please encourage your child to complete these forms and return to Mrs. Kopacko as soon as possible, All applications are due before winter break!

2016 Alum, Allen Johnson, recently starred in the St. Charles production of Investigating Carol. Allen was the only freshman offered a role in the play. Mrs. Tuney, Mrs. Willis, and 2016 Alumni Skyla Williams & Montinea Winters joined Allen’s parents in cheering him on during the Friday night performance. We are so proud!

ABOUT USWe will be helping out at KIPP this year! Our role at KIPP Journey is to provide social work services to both our students and our families. We are here to help both you and your child on various issues that may arise during their time at KIPP.

Emily  is  currently  the  School  Social  Work  intern  for  the  5th  grade  at  KIPP  Journey  Academy.  Emily  graduated  in  2004  from  Ohio  University  with  a  Degree  in  Special  EducaGon  with  and  emphasis  on  Individuals  with  Moderate  to  Severe  Developmental  DisabiliGes.  For  the  last  nine  years  she  has  traveled  the  world  working  as  a  nanny  and  last  year  decided  that  she  also  wanted  to  go  back  to  school  and  conGnue  her  educaGon!  She  is  currently  working  on  her  Master’s  Degree  with  a  clinical  concentraGon  in  School  Social  Work  at  The  Ohio  State  University.  Emily  has  volunteered  with  many  organizaGons  in  her  free  Gme  including  Faith  Mission,  Franklin  County  Board  of  Developmental  DisabiliGes  Early  EducaGon  Center  and  Habitat  for  Humanity.  For  the  past  three  years  Emily  has  also  parGcipated  in  Pelotonia,  which  is  an  annual  cycling  event  that  raised  money  for  cancer  research.

Ms. Creshonda Curry, LSW:• • •

Creshonda  is  currently  the  School  Social  Work  intern  for  the  6th  grade  at  KIPP  Journey  Academy.  Originally  from  Cleveland,  Ohio,  Creshonda  graduated  from  The  Ohio  State  University  in  June  2012  with  a  Bachelors  Degree  in  Social  Work  and  a  minor  in  Human  Development  and  Family  Sciences.  A  month  before  that  she  had  given  birth  to  her  first  child,  Kyla.  She  then  decided  to  pursue  her  Masters  Degree  that  same  month  in  Social  Work  at  The  Ohio  State  University  with  a  clinical  concentraGon.  Creshonda  has  volunteered  at  Franklin  County  Childrens  Services,  Huckleberry  House,  The  SalvaGon  Army,  and  the  Mid-­‐Ohio  Foodbank.  She  has  interned  at  St.  Vincent’s  Family  Center  in  her  undergraduate  career  gaining  experience  in  Child  Mental  Health.  UlGmately,  Creshonda  hopes  to  aYain  her  PhD  in  Social  Work  with  her  research  focused  on  human  trafficking.

Ms. Stephanie Soika, LSW:• • •

Stephanie  is  currently  the  School  Social  Work  intern  for  the  7th  and  8th  grade  at  KIPP  Journey  Academy.  Stephanie  is  a  master's  student  at  The  Ohio  State  University  social  work  school  in  an  expedited  program  focused  on  school  social  work.    She  graduated  in  2008  from  Wright  State  University  with  a  major  in  social  work  and  a  minor  in  psychology,  where  she  was  in  the  NaGonal  Honors  Society  for  Social  Work  and  the  NaGonal  Honors  Society  for  psychology.  She  worked  with  military  populaGons  while  residing  in  Japan  from  2010-­‐2012.    She  has  also  worked  with  other  populaGons  at  sites  such  as  The  Food  Bank  and  Fairborn  Primary  School.

SERVICESWe  will  be  helping  out  at  KIPP  this  year!  Our  role  at  KIPP  Journey  is  to  provide  social  work  services  to  both  our  students  and  our  families.  We  are  here  to  help  both  you  and  your  child  on  various  issues  that  may  arise  during  their  Gme  at  KIPP.  These  services  include  but  are  not  limited  to:

·∙            Help  students  to  cope  in  a  Gme  of  crisis·∙            Help  students  become  successful  learners·∙            Assist  teachers  in  meeGng  the  educaGonal  outcomes  of  their  students.·∙            Assist  teachers  in  discovering  new  resources  for  their  students·∙            Support  parents/families  parGcipate  in  their  child’s  educaGon.·∙            Support  the  parents  in  understanding  their  child’s  educaGon  and  developmental  needs.·∙            Serve  as  liaison  between  the  school  and  outside  support  agencies.
