  FROM THE CTE DIRECTOR 

The North Kitsap School District Career and Technical Educa on (CTE) Department has con nued to help our students with their career and college pathways.  The last three years we have focused our vision on, “Different Paths, Success for All”.  Using these pathways, we will con nue to provide rigorous and relevant skills and knowledge so our students can con nue to be leaders in our communi es, state and world workforce.  CTE is an important component for students to understand how to be produc ve, competent ci zens in our communi es through leadership and employability opportuni es.  Working with prior knowledge and skill sets allows our students to move ahead in the work force with 21st century skills and educa on.  Whether our students a end an ins tu on for higher educa on or move directly into their career field they will have the experience, exper se, work‐ethic, and desire to succeed in their chosen field.  The landscape of educa on, both statewide and within the NKSD, has changed CTE program offerings.  The change has also caused us to make sure that we are using our dual credit sources and equivalency credits for our students’ maximum benefit.   Con nuing with making our Programs of Study as relevant for our students, parents, and industry as possible will also help our programs to con nue to grow and change within our new structure.    All students within the NKSD have a unique opportunity to develop a passion in the career choice of their dreams.  Community support of our staff, advisory groups, students, and employers allows us to make sure that all students have the ability to embark on, “Different Paths; Success for All”.  Patrick Olsen Director, Career and Technical Educa on North Kitsap School District 

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT 

We have enjoyed another stellar year in our Career and Technical Educa on (CTE) department. Whether highligh ng non‐

tradi onal careers for women through the Girls Exploring Math and Science conference at Olympic College, giving students hands‐

on engineering experience through the Remote Operated Vehicle compe on, or providing real‐world experience through our 

Culinary Arts classes, CTE programs are helping our youth prepare for the future. 

Over 14 million students across the na on are enrolled in CTE in nearly 1,300 high school and 1,700 two‐year colleges. Na onally, 

the average high school gradua on rate for students concentra ng in these programs is 90.18% compared to an average na onal 

freshman graduate rate of 74.9%.  

About one‐third of the projected 47 million job openings in the decade ending in 2018 will require an associate’s degree or cer fi‐

cate and nearly all will require the kind of skills that can be mastered through CTE. The strong and effec ve instruc on and oppor‐

tuni es in district CTE programs are essen al in helping our youth prepare for the future.

North Kitsap School District 

FARM‐TO‐TABLE PROJECT 

A large project that was started at the end of last year and is coming to frui on is our Farm‐to‐Table project with our Culinary Arts 

program and a couple of farmers from the North Kitsap community.  The Farm‐to‐Table movement started around twenty years 

ago in some of our agricultural communi es as a way to have fresh, organic food delivered directly from the farm to the restau‐

rant or home.  Today, the movement has grown and is a growing business model on the West Coast and in a number of our major 

metropolitan areas, like Sea le, Portland, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.   

We are very fortunate to have three industry standard greenhouses on our Hor culture site that needed a li le refreshing and 

change to make this happen.  Brian Simmons and Valerie Randall answered the call from our community.  They currently run a 

small family farm north of Poulsbo, and Brian is in charge of the Poulsbo Farmers Market.  What a team!  Together, with Aaron 

Covey, our in‐house chef, they have rearranged the interior of one greenhouse (and are working on the second), have a plan ng 

schedule to follow, and have put in a lot of clean‐up  me at the site. 

What will happen with all the food?  We have a plan in place for the Culinary Arts students to help with the plan ng, care, and 

harves ng of the food.  This will allow them to understand how food grows, how to change the flavor of the food depending 

growing strategies, and how to use certain foods that we can’t currently purchase from FSA.  We are also hoping that we are able 

to have some extra food that we can do food boxes for staff members to purchase so student groups can raise ASB funds for com‐

pe ons and travel, and also supply Fish Line with some extra fresh vegetables on a semi‐regular basis. 

Instruc on across the curriculum:  Teaming up with the K‐12 Science instructors will allow the Hor culture site to be used more 

frequently and by more students and teachers.  Currently, the space has primarily been used by the Agricultural Science program 

at NKHS.  By star ng to implement these changes we will be in posi on to help all of our K‐12 Science programs with field trip 

opportuni es, biology labs and assignments, and other science standards.  As we are able to add progression we will be able to 

use other members of our staff to align new Science standards K‐12, have in‐depth conversa ons of new projects and labs that 

will meet the new standards, and have a lab facility that will be a benefit to all curricular areas. 

Risk Management:  We have formed a great team with the risk management group that has advised us along the way on the cor‐

rect methods, needed protocols, and items of interest.  This has been another great lesson for our students and staff as this    

hasn't been taught in many of the classes we run.  By bringing in soil tes ng, water safety, GAP cer fica on protocols, and other 

ways to keep customers, students, and staff safe we have allowed our students an inside look at one part of a restaurant industry 

that they had been missing. 

Community Partners:  The Farm Works group is not the only community group that has been involved.  The North Kitsap Schools 

Founda on has provided us with some grant money to help get us started and is very interested in con nuing, and growing, this 

STEM ini a ve as we are able.  The lumber we used for the boxes was bought from Smythe Lumber out of the Indianola area; the 

rock and topsoil was supplied by Vern’s Topsoil, and the Poulsbo Noon Lions are going to help with some light projects around the 

greenhouses as well.  This will be a great community effort and revitaliza on. 

As you can tell this project has many avenues and a lot of growth poten al for numerous programs within CTE and across all    

curriculums in our K‐12 program.  We are going to be taking one step at a  me to make sure we are building a sustainable design 

that works for our district, staff, students, and our community partners.

In addi on to these top three placing's, the team also took several 4th and 5th place finalist awards. The chapter earned the “Largest Chapter” within our membership type. 

REMOTE OPERATED VEHICLE CHALLENGE(ROV)   

In coopera on with the Navy and Keyport the Engineering and Pre‐Engineering students have an opportunity to design, build, and run ROV’s against each other and also in a regional contest at Olympic High.  Our student teams did a great job with this project.  The Kingston Middle School team of  Nolan Platz and Brennan Jacobson placed 7th in the middle school challenge. 

FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA 

Jus n Seevers qualified for the Na onal Leadership Conference Compe ve Event for the Microso  Office Specialist (MOS) Word exam.  He will be heading to Anaheim June 29th.  Winners of this event will move on to Cer port’s MOS World Championship in Washington, D.C. July 29th.

CAREER COUNSELOR 

This year the career counselor posi on was extended to include Kingston High 

School. The Career Center is located  inside the main por on of the library at KHS 

and next to the library at NKHS. Students can come in for informa on about two and 

four year college op ons, trade schools, technical programs, careers, tes ng and 

much more. September and October are the busy months with college and military 

visits. In March, we conducted ASVAB tes ng at North and Kingston High School.  

Students were able to a end numerous career and college explora on visits includ‐

ing; the Na onal College Fair, Olympic College Tour and workshops, Harrison Medi‐

cal Center Job Shadow Day, Point Defiance  Career Day and Safeco Field Career Day.

Students within CTE programs have the opportunity to earn college credits while a ending high school classes.  These credits are 

called Tech‐Prep credits and are available to students in most CTE offerings in the North Kitsap School District.  These credits are 

offered by community colleges, technical schools and four‐year universi es.  This helps the students and their families save mon‐

ey and  me as well as showing that NKSD students are very capable of handling challenging coursework.  Last school year 787 

students in NKSD earned Tech‐Prep credit.

Every year the instructors from each program are able to choose one student that they feel best exemplifies expecta ons within

MICROSOFT IT ACADEMY  

The Microso  and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruc on (OSPI) partnered to provide a way for all Washington high 

schools to bridge the gap between educa on and the real world within the computer industry.  The industry cer fica ons availa‐

ble include most Microso  products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  The curriculum is being taught at our 7‐12 grade 

levels and each student has the opportunity to take a test at the end of each of the units.  This year we had  145 students that
