Themes
• Kitchen was made into a Hong Kong film called Wo Ai Chu Fang, directed by Ho Yim.
What feelings and ideas do the following movie pictures portray?
A novel about death, love and loneliness
• Kitchen deals with a wide range of themes.• Group work – 6 groups work on ONE different theme
card each. (HANDOUT#5)• How are these important themes presented by the
quotations? Consider Yoshimoto’s use of imagery, symbolism, choice of diction and language techniques.
• What feelings do the quotations evoke? How?• Write a very short (20-30 words) analysis of each
quotation on your theme card.• Everyone will in turn name their theme to the class,
read their quotes and present their findings.
Plenary
• Which of the themes presented today can you most easily relate to? Why?
• Which of the themes do you find strangest or hardest to comprehend? Why do you think this is?
Homework – Multiple Intelligence Tasks
• Choose one of the MI tasks.
• Prepare a 2-3 minute presentation and make sure you include explanation of how your presentation shows relevant aspects of Kitchen, in order to make it effective.
• Presentations will take place in lesson 7 of the unit.
