The second key approach to peace is communication. Communi-

cation and Compassion. They’re a tag-team tool for creating world peace. In this approach, talking the talk is just as important as walking the walk. When faced with conflict we can not resort to war at any level. We must approach it with one ques-

to be concluded...

o Respect the interests of others o Combine your interests to generate solutions o Actively listen to what the other person has to say o Discern, or just outright ask, what is the real story or complaint behind the person’s actions or attitude? o Remember that others also have the right to achieve and have the right to happiness o Use critical thinking to separate the person itself from the attitude they are portraying, and orient compassion to the person and not the attitude. o Approach with unbiased compassion: this way, you can deal with your enemies just as well as with your friends o Have compassion at all levels - family, community, friends, etc. o Above all, practice truth, the power of truth always remains.

All of these guidelines seem very common sense, don’t they? Well, that is the point. Every piece of advice the Dalai Lama bestowed upon us was re-alistic in terms of practical application in our everyday life. Someone posed the question, “Will we ever achieve peace?” The answer was simple. Peace will come through our actions, not just

through prayer. Our methods must be realistic. Wishful thinking will not achieve anything. Be practical and show the next generation the right way through education. Keep up enthusi-asm, optimism and courage and build a basis of trust, honesty and openness. For through those things we generate genuine human hope.

Matchsticks: The Next Right Answer(s)by: Robert Gooding-Townsend

Keywords for a Collaborative Future

Dear Sir, You appear to be suffering from what we in INTEG 120 call a “closed problem,” where there is only one so-called right answer to your problem. The dire consequences of this include but are not limited to: perpetual lack of imagination, stagnated creativ-ity, becoming an accountant (sorry), nausea, vomiting, angering Socrates by living an unexamined life, death, and dividing by zero. But it’s okay—we in INTEG 120 have spent countless hours training to do away with the constraints of such closed problems and open them up. Be prepared to have your assumptions ques-tioned so hard that even string theory will start to seem plausible. The problem was to start with thirteen matchsticks as shown, and leave ten. First of all, the “actual” solution would look as pic-tured below. However, as mentioned, this is boring. Here is how the problem could be solved in various disciplines:

Accounting: Count the initial sticks very “carefully” and announce that there are fourteen. Then, when you take away four, there will be ten.

Biology: Take away four sticks. Wait for the remaining ones to re-produce. Chemistry: Go back in time by log2(14/13) times the half-life of a matchstick, to before that elusive fourteenth matchstick decayed. Then take away four.

Ecology: Implement the original solution backwards, to obtain a NET. Go out and catch ten of something.

Engineering/rabble-rousing: Take away four matchsticks. Light the rest on fire. This will cause great alarm, as you are in a matchstick factory. Also, the only thing on hand that can put out fires will be piles of matchsticks, to smother them. In the instant after the first such matchstick has landed, you will have ten matchsticks.

English: Take away four. In an unexpected plot twist, reunite a matchstick with its long-lost twin.

Mythology: Remove three matchsticks in the normal manner, and remove one more by setting fire to it, as above. This will be reborn from the ashes, as it is a phoenix-matchstick.

Knowledge Integration: Take the chicken in the boat on the way back, as you break the blackboard into three rows with three dots on them. At the matchstick factory, demonstrate the efficacy of your product by striking it against the pieces of blackboard, in such a man-ner as to go through all the dots, and then offer totrade the fox, which farmers don’t like anyway, for ten new match-sticks.

Ever wanted to generate ideas? OH WAIT! You already do, because you’re in KI. But work-ing to generate ideas in groups can lead to more amazing results than any one member can achieve. That’s where KISS Innovation Committee comes in: it’s KI’s own think-tank.

The Innovation Committee holds weekly meetings on Wednesdays at 12:30pm and all are welcome to participate in brainstorming on a topic of the week. Discussions can go any-where, and there is no shortage of amazing ideas.

KI Innovation Committee

Last week the topic was “What could KISS accomplish, given all the resources in the world?” Here is a highlight of the ideas gener-ated:

• Get corporate sponsors for KI to get money for trips • Start a different type of co-op program o Through our corporate sponsors o Hire a think tank out of KI o Start a company like IDEO o Make community/sustainable businesses• Start a feud with another program sneakily - SYDE?• Create media to promote KI globally o Do “In KI” every year, in the city each class is going to• Create a KI flag and KI Mascot• Elect someone better than Harper• Make a website (like Linkedin?) where people can share: o What they’re doing, and what they’ve done o Projects they’re involved with o Ideas o Who their mentors are o Quotations o What they like o A course database• Start Knowledge Integration movement o KI college program, programs at other universities.• Create KI Field-work courses• Create a KI band/orchestra/choir and make a video of it (!)

Cooking With Kenzieby: Kenzie Reid

Quiche: it sounds fancy, but is in fact ridiculously easy. And very tasty.

CRUSTYou can use a frozen pre-made crust, or make one: this version is super easy and doesn’t require rolling-out.* 1 ¼ cups flour* ¼ tsp. salt* ½ cup oil* 2 Tbsp. cold milkJust mix these ingredients together, and pat the mixture into a pie plate.

CHEESELine the inside of the crust with grated cheese—cheddar and Swiss are good choices. Use enough to completely cover the bottom crust, and press it into the sides of the crust as well.

FILLING IDEASFrom here, add whatever vegetables or meat you want. The total amount of filling should be about a cup. Here are some of my favourite options:* Finely chop a medium onion and cook it on medium heat with a dash of nutmeg and/or mustard, until it is soft and brown and caramelized. This is really good with steamed spinach, kale, Swiss chard, or any leafy green thing.* Chop broccoli into little florets and steam it until it’s tender, and add it along with some sauteed garlic.* 1 ½ cups of sliced mushrooms, sauteed until they are tender and brown, with oregano, thyme, and/or rosemary.Really, you can throw in whatever you like, as long as it’s cooked beforehand. It’s a good way to use up leftovers! Whatever your fillings are, spread them on top of the cheese so that they are about level with the top of the pie crust.

EGGSBeat 3 eggs with a fork, and add a cup of milk. Pour this mixture over the quiche’s contents until it is just to the brim of the pie crust. It’s okay to have some of the filling poking through the surface of the egg mixture, but not too far. Sprinkle the top with paprika, then bake this monster!Bake at 375°F for 40 minutes, or until it’s solid in the middle. Make sure it cools for 10 minutes before you dive into it, just to give it the chance to firm up some more. It is excellent warm or cold. Enjoy!

Australian-based guitarist John Butler fronts the John Butler Trio and has an incredibly

unique guitar style. His combination of Alterna-tive Rock, Roots, Funk Rock, and Bluegrass, combined with instrumentation in percussion, didgeridoo, and steel lap slide guitars create a groove that can be rode for hours.

John was known for his dreadlocks before he cut them off in 2008, but is still known for his pointed acrylic fingernails that allow for his unique finger picking. He is perhaps one of the best guitarists I have heard recently, and he puts on a spectacular live show. If you don’t believe me, check out his “Live at St. Gallen” album and also peep the first two videos in this week’s playlist. They are rather impressive!
