Kirtley Sheet Metal was founded in 1981 by PhilipKirtley. The company installed built-up roofing, mainlyfor commercial buildings in the Houston area. Upon
forming his own company, Philip began a transition into therelatively new field on standing seam metal roofing. The trendof metal roofing was rapidly growing stronger in the Houstonarea and Berridge Manufacturing Company, founded in 1970,was establishing a reputation as a leader in the relativelynew field of architectural metal roofing. Kirtley Sheet Metalbegan to install various types of metal roofing, including somealuminum shake shingle jobs using Berridge products. Com-mercial projects which utilized standing seam roofing wouldcomprise the majority of Kirtley Sheet Metal’s metal roofingwork over the next three decades, while the firm also offeredseveral flat roofing products.. In the mid 90’s Kirtley Sheet Metal began using Berridgeportable roll forming equipment to fabricate continuous lengthstanding seam metal roofing panels, and thus began a newprocess which would virtually revolutionize the company’smode of operation. Phillip Kirtley describes the transition tosite-forming: “We found there was no comparison with buy-ing factory-made standing seam panels from other compa-nies -- with site forming our own panels, there is no waitingfor delivery and we are in control of the job schedule from

start to finish!” Kirtley Sheet Metal purchased a Berridge Model SS-14 Tee-Panel Standing Seam portable roll former in 2001 and a ModelCL-21 Cee-Lock Standing Seam portable roll former in 2002.They utilize their portable roll formers both in the shop and atthe job site for panels longer than forty feet. Kirtley’s modernsheet metal shop is also equipped with a computerized sheetmetal brake for fabrication of custom flashing, coping, trim,gutters and downspout accessories to complete the job.

When Ken Anderson went to work for the new architec-tural firm Terradevco in 1973, the main thoroughfare
leading into The Woodlands, Texas was a dirt road. Ken’s firstjob as an Intern Architect/Draftsman was to prepare construc-tion documents for the first buildings to be built in the newwooded community which is located thirty miles North of Hous-ton, Texas. In the thirty-two years that have followed KenAnderson has formed his own “Woodlands Friendly” firm, fol-lowing the local motto: “Live, Work and Play in The Wood-lands”. Now celebrating their twenty-fifth Silver Anniversary, KenAnderson & Associates, Inc. is a full service architectural firmwith project experience encompassing Parks, Medical Facili-ties, Churches, Commercial, Multi-Family, Offices, Retail,Restaurants, and more. Eighty percent of Anderson’s work isin The Woodlands and the firm is recognized as the premierarchitectural firm in the area. In describing his work with metal roofing in gen-eral and Berridge metal roofing products in particu-lar, Ken notes: “Berridge metal roofing is everywhereyou look in The Woodlands -- We’ve built dozens ofpark shelters and other structures and ninety per-cent of them have Berridge roofs.” The Windsor LakeCommunity Center featured in this article utilizedBerridge’s Cee-Lock Standing Seam roof system.Several other Ken Anderson & Associates projectsare also shown.
