Biography of Nicholas Kirtley [#12323] {21065}
“Nicholas Kirtley, subject of this sketch, is one of the leading citizens of Andrew County, MO.,
and a retired merchant of Savannah. He was born in Rockcastle County, KY., on December
23, 1841, and is the son of Larkin and Nancy (Dysart) Kirtley. The father was born in Scott
County, KY., in 1805, and removed to Andrew County, MO., in the fall of 1849, locating ten
miles east from Savannah, where he followed farming until his death in 1865. The mother
was born in Rockcastle County, KY., May 15, 1806, and is now making her home on the old
homestead in Andrew County, with a son. Nicholas was reared on a farm, and educated at
the North Prairie Institute, near Fillmore. Upon leaving school in 1861, he entered the Con-
federate army, and served for two years, first under Gen. Price's command, and afterward in
Wilfley's battalion of cavalry. Returning to Andrew County at the expiration of his service,
he engaged in farming and stock deaeling, in which he continued until 1875 when he re-
moved to Savannah, having been elected to the office of county treasurer the year preceding.
He served in the capacity of treasurer for two years, when he engaged in merchandising in
Savannah, at which he continued until February 1, 1887, when he retired. He was married in
March, 1875, to Annie Scott, a native of Mason County, KY., who died July 20, 1876. On
June 19, 1879, he was married to Mary A. Wakefield, who was born in Savannah, MO., Sep-
tember 10, 1856, and is the daughter of Dr. M. F. Wakefield (deceased). They have one
child.”

The History of Henry & St. Clair Counties, Missouri (St. Joseph, MO: National Histor-
ical Co., 1883), p. 750 (Biography of Samuel L. Kirtly [#11145]) {20017}
“Samuel L. Kirtly, stock dealer at Brownington, came originally from Boone County, Kentucky,
where he was born July 10, 1846, being the son of Elijah and Mary Kirtly, nee Sandfords,
also Kentuckians by birth. Samuel accompanied his parents to Boone County, Missouri, in
1856, but after living there two years they came to Henry County, where he grew to man-
hood, his youth being spent on a farm. In March, 1864, he enlisted in the Forty-fifth Missouri
Volunteer Infantry and served till discharged, July 5, 1865. He participated in the fights at
Jefferson City, Nashville, Tennessee, and Frankfort. After his discharge he returned to his
home, and was married here December 24, 1867, to Miss Sarah F. Brown, a daughter of John
P. Brown and a native of the county. After this he was engaged in farming and trading in cat-
tle for about thirteen years. He is now giving his attention to the handling and feeding of cat-
tle and hogs, and handles on an average about twenty-five car loads of cattle and twenty car
loads of hogs annually. He is at present in partnership with J. L. Peeler in the stock business,
and these gentlemen are feeding at this time 105 head of steers and about 175 head of hogs.
Mrs. Kirtly died in March, 1873, leaving three children: Sidney May, Laura J. and Rosa Bird.
Mr. K. was subsequently married October 8, 1876, to Mrs. Emma Wagnor, of this county.
She has one son by her former marriage, Arna Wagnor. There are three children by this last
marriage: Ura, Lock. H. and Jane H. Mr. Kirtly is identified with the Democratic party and
has filled several local offices in this township, among others that of constable for four con-
secutive years. His wife is a member of the Christian Church.”

Dr. M. B. Collins [#6643]
"Dr. COLLINS was born in Howard county in 1836; has been practicing medicine in Glasgow
over twenty-two years, and is one of the leading physicians in the western part of the county.
His parents, James and Mildred COLLINS, his mother being formerly a Miss JOHNSON,
were originally from Virginia, but settled in this county at an early day. Dr. COLLINS,
whose mother died when he was an infant, lived with his uncle, Jack COLLINS, till five
years of age, when he went to Virginia to live with his grandfather, Colonel Valentine
JOHNSON, of Orange county. In 1851 he returned to Missouri, where he lived with his un-
cle, M. B. COLLINS, and continued the prosecution of his studies at Elm Ridge academy. In
1855, when nineteen years of age, he resumed the study of medicine under Dr. RUCKER,
continuing it afterward under I. P. VAUGHAN, and in 1860 graduated from the Jefferson
medical college, of Philadelphia, which he also attended after his graduation. In 1861 he be-
gan the practice of medicine in Glasgow, which he has since continued. In his professional
career he has been successful, both as a physician and in situating himself comfortably in
life, notwithstanding that as to the latter particular he has done a great deal of practice for
which he never asked or expected anything except the gratitude of those whom he benefited,
which he has not always received, and the consciousness of having done his duty to suffering
humanity. From the beginning he possessed the four leading qualification for a successful
physician, industry, the love of medicine as a science, a natural liking for its practice, and a
determination to go to the front in his profession. With these qualifications he could hardly
have failed to win the success he has. June 16, 1862, he was married to Miss J. D. FINKS, an
excellent and accomplished lady of this county. They have a family of three interesting chil-
dren, Mildred, May B. and Bruce B. The doctor and his wife are members of the Baptist
church."
William J. Hughes [#6642/1]
"The HUGHES family, of which the subject of this sketch is a representative, have been pioneer
settlers in four states of the union; Maryland, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Missouri. The
founder of the family in this county was a Welshman, who came over to America and settled
in Maryland, in the early days of the colonies. There William HUGHES, the grandfather of
William J., was born and reared. He was married, however, in Pennsylvania, Miss Martha,
daughter of John SWAN, of that state, becoming his wife. They were married in Fort Pitt,
where Pittsburg now stands, at the time the people were "forted", or fortified, against the
British and Indians. A short time afterwards, and after the birth of Joseph S., father of Wil-
liam J., he moved with his family to Pennsylvania. Remaining in that state for a short time,
he then emigrated to Kentucky, and was among the first settlers of that state, having to take
refuge frequently with his family in the forts for protection against the Indians. There, Joseph
grew to manhood, and married his wife, Cassandra, who was a daughter of Colonel William
PRICE, an old soldier of the Revolutionary War, and for many years a state senator in Ken-
tucky. In 1816, Joseph S. HUGHES came to this state and selected a location about four
miles west of Fayette, in Howard county, and the following year brought his family out to his
new home. He opened a farm there of about 300 acres, but some years afterwards moved to a
place about five miles east of Glasgow, where he also made a large farm. On this place he
lived until his death, which occurred in 1863, his wife following him five years afterwards.
They reared a family of eight children, of whom the subject of this sketch, who now resides
on the old homestead of his father, was the seventh. Joseph S. HUGHES was a successful
farmer and was respected by all who knew him for his many sterling, manly qualities. Wil-
liam J., was born in this county, January 5th, 1826, and was reared on the farm where he now
lives. He received a good education in youth, and was brought up to habits of industry which
have not forsaken him. He was married November 29, 1849, to Miss Lucy C., daughter of
James COLLINS. They have ten children: Joseph S., May F. (now Mrs. W. R. PAINTER),
Benjamin J., William C., James C., Overton L., Robert L., Harry B., Louisa F. and Ernest T.
Mrs. Hughes is also a native of Howard county, having been born here April 2, 1832. Mr. H.
has a fine farm of 450 acres, all well improved and in good condition. It is exceptionally
adapted to stock raising, to which he gives a large share of his attention. He and several of his
family are members of the Baptist church."
John W. Rock [#6554/1]
"Farmer. Mr. Rock, who is one of the substantial farmers of Howard county, and who has served
as justice of the peace of his township for the past seven years, has been a resident of this
county for over twenty-five years. He was born in Barren county, Kentucky, September 5,
1829. His father, Joshua Rock, was a native of Virginia, but came to Kentucky and was there
married to Miss Mary Farhis, and lived in Barren county until 1841, when they immigrated
to Missouri and settled in Linn county. Two years later they moved to Macon county and
lived there ten years; then, in 1853, moved to Grundy county. John W. was twelve years old
before his parents left Barren county, namely, 1841, and consequently spent most of his
youth in this state, and particularly in Macon county, where he attended the common schools,
receiving a good ordinary education. When a young man he worked for a time at the carpen-
ter's trade, but was reared on a farm and has followed that occupation thus far through life.
In 1857 he came to Howard county, where he has since resided, and now owns a farm of 181
1/2 acres in a good state of improvement. He served for a while in the enrolled militia, and
afterwards in the Missouri state militia. On the 15th of May, 1857, he was married to Miss
Mary M., daughter of Peter and Polly Page Ford, of this county, but originally of Kentucky.
Mr. and Mrs. Rock have two children, Mary B. and Laura. Both parents are members of the
Baptist church."
JUNE WILLIAMS,
who in youth attended Hon. James G. Blame's school in Kentucky, and was born
and reared in that state, has been a citizen of Howard county since 1853, and
is one of the substantial and highly respected farmers of the county. He was
born December 3, 1830, and at the age of nineteen, in 1849, bid good-bye to the
dear ones of his native home in Scott county, and started for the gold fields
of California. He remained in the Aladdin land of the Pacific until 1851, when
he returned to
"His old Kentucky home, far away."
But on his trip he had passed through Howard county, this state, and had become
impressed with the fertility of its soil and its other superior natural
advantages, and accordingly, in 1853, he came to this county, where be settled
and engaged permanently in farming. His place is about four and a half miles
from Glasgow, and contains 212 acres of the best quality of land. On the 18th
of December, 1854, Mr. Williams was married to Miss Martha Rucker, of Randolph
county, but formerly of Virginia, and they have nine children living - Junie,
Granville, Archie, Dabney, James, Mattie, Horace, Rena and Carrie. One,
besides, is dead - Sidney. Mr. Williams is a member of the Masonic order. His
father, Merrett Williams, was a Virginian by birth, but was reared in Kentucky.
Mrs. Merrett Williams, mother of June, whose maiden name was Eliza Smith, was
of Fayette county, Kentucky.

Biography of William Kirtley [#1115] {20955}
“William Kirtley, farmer, P. O. Dover. The parents of the subject of this sketch were native Vir-
ginians, who went to Boone county, Kentucky, at an early day, where William was born, Oc-
tober 28, 1812. Was raised and educated in his native state. In 1837 he came to Missouri on
a prospecting tour, and being prepossessed with the country moved there in 1844, settling in
Lafayette county, Dover township, where he purchased land and opened up a farm. In 1856
he built a fine, large, brick residence. August 27, 1832, he was married to Miss Elizabeth E.
Shelby, of Charlestown, Indiana, a distant relative of Gen. Jo Shelby of this county. By this
union they have seven children, namely: Elijah B., Gustavus A., James B., Richard B.,
Charles C. (named after Charles Carroll, of Carrollton, Maryland, one of the signers of the
Declaration of Independence), Dora M., Montie M. In 1831 while making a trip from Cin-
cinnati, to the south, via. the river, engaged in shipping stock, a causualty happened, which
came near being serious. When near New Madrid the boat struck upon a snag and instantly
filling, all came near being drowned. By prompt action, however, all were rescued. While
on his return trip from Missouri, an opportunity was offered him to purchase a tract of land at
$10 per acre, which is now worth $500 per acre. As he had already bought in Lafayette
county, he declined, thereby making, as he expressed it, "the greatest mistake of my life."
Mr. Kirtley is an energetic, enterprising business man; one who does not sit down to "cry
over spilt milk," but immediately goes to work and rectifies a mistake, as far as possible
when one is made.”
Biography of James B. S. Kirtley [#11154] {20956}
“Capt. James B. S. Kirtley, P. O. Lexington. Capt. Kirtley was born in Boone county, Kentucky,
February 2, 1844. His father, William Kirtley, is now living in this county, a short distance
south of Dover. His mother, Elizabeth Kirtley, was a daughter of Isaac Shelby, who formerly
lived in this county. In the year of his birth, 1844, Capt. Kirtley moved with his parents to
this county, and settled on the farm where his father still resides. He was raised in this
county and partly educated here and partly in the Baptist College, at Georgetown, Kentucky,
where he graduated in 1867. During the war he served under Gen. Shelby in the confederate
army. He first enlisted in 1861 in the state guard, in which he was captured by Jim Lane in
Bates county. He was released on parole, and came home and assisted his father in moving
his slaves to Arkansas, and then rejoined Shelby. After the battle of Corinth he enrolled in
Company A, First Missouri Cavalry, Gordon's regiment, of which he was elected second
lieutenant, and was captain from 1863 to the end of the war. During that period he was on
Col. Shank's staff. After the surrender he went with Shelby to Mexico. He was in nearly all
of the principal battles west of the river, and some east, from Carthage in 1861 to Price's last
raid in 1864. After remaining a year in Mexico, he returned home and went to Georgetown,
Kentucky, college and graduated. He was married on November 11, 1873, to Miss Sarah T.
McCord, daughter of William McCord, deceased. They have had four children, all girls, the
two youngest of whom are living. He is a member of the Missionary Baptist church. He
was raised on a farm, and is now engaged in farming on the old McCord farm three miles
east of Lexington. He also deals largely in stock.”

tent the confidence and respect of all who know him, he comes of a family of children they
have not only done credit to themselves but have brought honor upon the name they bear.
Mr. Kirtley's parents, Asa T. and Mary B. Kirtley, nee Rogers, both came of Kentucky nativ-
ity, the former from Boone county and the latter from Fayette county. Asa was a son of Rob-
ert Kirtley his forefathers having come from England in an early day. While in the Blue
Grass State he (Asa) followed farming as a livelihood, and after living there until 1833 he
moved to Indiana, which was his home until returning to Kentucky in 1837. A year later he
settled in Saline county, Mo. and the next year became a citizen of Livingston county, where
he purchased a huge tract of land east of Mooresville, and commenced its cultivation. In
1867 he moved to Lafayette county and at this time he now resides there, occupied in farm-
ing. His wife died in 1855, leaving eight children. She was a daughter of John Rodgers (who
died of the cholera in 1832) and was remarried to Mr. K. in 1831. The names of these chil-
dren were Marcus, who died July 15, 1882; Valerius died when 18 years old; Cyrus was a
member of the Confederate army during the war and saw much active service, was several
times wounded and once reduced to the necessity of sustaining himself upon the flesh of
mules and horses, and surrendered with Pemberton's forces; he now resides at Marshall, Mo.;
Erastus was a member of the M. S. M. and is now located in Marshall, Saline county; Lycur-
gus graduated from William Jewell College and also from the Crosier Theological Seminary,
near Philadelphia, subsequently devoting a year's study with Dr. Osgood, of Flushing, Long
Island; is now an able and rising minister of the Baptist Church at Jackson, Mich.; Manlius,
unmarried, and Millard died in infancy, After the death his first wife Mr. Kirtley married
Miss Margaret F. Herndon, of Carroll county. Three children blessed this union: Endora,
wife of Thomas Bates, of Paola, Kan.; Edward died at the age of 18, and Arthur now assists
in the management of the home place. Euphronius Kirtley was born November 26, 1835, in
Decatur county, Ind., but was reared in this county, receiving a good common school educa-
tion, supplemented by ten months' attendanoe at Edinburg College. In 1865 he left home,
traveled throughout the West for a year, then returned and purchased a large farm east of
Mooresville. January 29, 1863, he was married to Miss Martha E. Stuckey, daughter of John
Stuckey, an old and esteemed citizen of this county. Mrs. K. died in March, 1875, leaving
four children: Asa T., Mary B., Bertie and Hattie. August 29, 1877, Mr. Kirtley was again
married, to Mrs. Dora Jordan. Mr. Kirtley farm now embraces 280 acres of land and upon it
he has a number of short-horm cattle, an industry to which he gives considerable attention.”
