Welcome to the December edition of our monthly newsletter. We are excited to share with you the great events and happening s each month, so that you have all the information needed to support your child in our school. We are halfway through the second Quarter and quickly moving towards mid-terms and the New Year. I want to take a moment just to say thank you and wish everyone a wonderful holiday season. Hopefully I will see many of you at our Holiday Show this evening, December 16th. In this packet, you will also find your child‟s progress report. As we near the middle of the year, it is vital for you to stay on top of your child‟s grades and continue to push them to seek the support they need to be successful in their classes. As our sophomores know, mid-terms are very important in terms ofsetting the tone for kids‟ progress and for giving the students, families and staffan idea of where we are strong and what topics we need to re-address. Please encourage your child to get the help they need and make sure they attend our Saturday review sessions, on January 22nd. As we have mentioned before, we have tutoring available before school, during lunch, and after-school. Please reach out to us if you want more information. During the week of January 24th through January 28th, we will be running an alternative schedule as the students take their mid- term exams. Each day students will take an exam in the morning and have time for studying, tutoring, and getting extra help in the afternoons. Study Skills, 9th GradeAfter we returned from break, the Study Skillsclass has been taking a closer look at homeworkefficiency. For one week, students kept a“Homework Time Log,” where they recorded howmuch time they devoted to each of theirassignments. Then in class, we looked at which
subjects had the most time consuming assignmentsand the reasons why the assignments were takingso long. This is the beginning of a longerconversation about creating a balance betweenspending enough time on each assignment tounderstand it and complete it accurately, but notsacrificing other subjects‟ assignments or hours of sleep in the process.
Critical Reading, 10th gradeThe Critical Reading class is diving intoliterature analysis this month as wehave begun our ocean themed guidedreading novels: Old Man in the Sea andThe Black Pearl. Each day, studentsare practicing how to identify and ana-
lyze literary elements in fictional text.Getting comfortable with this skill willprepare students for the critical lensessay they will have to write on Half of a Yellow Sun in English at the end of the quarter.
The „Sprinkler,‟ the„Cabbage Patch, and the„Running Man‟ are allexamples of party dancesfrom the 1980s and 1990s.These dances were created by a person having a goodtime at a party and it spreadthroughout America. Indance class, the 9th and 10th
grade students formed small
groups to create their ownoriginal party dance.Students used differentInspirations from city life todevelop the movement, name, and origin of theirparty dance. Each groupperformed and shared theirparty dance to the entireclass. The students were
able to connect all the party
dances into a larger dancecombination. Students createdthe „Delicious,‟ „Bummy Boy,‟„The Sports Play,‟ „The TeenWave,‟ „TT- JJ,‟ and manymore!
Now, students are working onchoreography for the WinterCelebration. They are dancingto “Run Run Rudolph” and
having lots of fun!

„Paso a paso, se va adelante,‟ means „Step by step, one goes far ahead.‟ Spanish 2students have jumped in with both feet and
are steadily working their way toward nextyear‟s Regents Exam. As they build ontheir previous knowledge and skills,Spanish 2 students will gain the ability tocommunicate about themselves and the
world around them with a culminat-ing (and impressive!) final project--a10 page autobiography. As we worktoward this goal, students will takeon greater individual responsibilityfor developing fluency in theirvocabulary by reviewing in short, consistent intervals each night.

Ninth Grade English is about to beginthe play Twelve Angry Men by Re-
ginald Rose. We begin by studying theAmerican judicial system and under-standing the integral role of the averagecitizen in the pursuit of justice in acourt of law. Because Twelve AngryMen is set in the 1950s, we are alsostudying the social context of the time, such as the beginning of integration inpublic schools in Little Rock, Arkansas.
