On behalf of the Kingsview Staff, I would like to welcome you to the 2011-2012 school year. To our returning families, thank you for making the 2010-2011 school year such a success! Our students excelled academically and we look forward to sharing our results with you as part of our continuous improvement process. For the newest Kingsview members, we are pleased to welcome you to our family. Our school community truly feels like a family and you are going to love it here! It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome our new Principal Intern, Dr. Anthony Nottingham. Dr. Nottingham will be working collaboratively with the administrative team, staff, students, and parents to prepare him to eventually become a principal in any MCPS school. The internship experience is a combination of professional development activities and job-embedded application of theories and concepts. The 2011-2012 school year holds the promise of making our motto a reality. Our motto, We A.R.R.E. Focused on Student Results, for Every Child, Every Day! (A=Access, R=Relationships, R=Rigor, E= Equity) is what drives our work. At Kingsview, we believe that all students will excel at high levels when there is a partnership and relationship between students, staff, and parents. We ensure equity for all students so they may receive the individual support they need to reach and exceed our standards and expectations. Our goal is for all students to access advanced level curriculum and course work to prepare them for what it takes to be college ready. Each year, we review multiple data sources as part of our continuous improvement process and our students have continued to make progress. As you can see in the data charts on the next page, the extensive, laser- like focus we placed on reading school wide has truly paid off. We have achieved and exceeded our goals in all but one area in math. As a result, we did not make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). Attached is a chart of our progress from 2003-2011. This data has assisted us with focusing our efforts to adequately support students academic goals for the upcoming year.

Additionally we review referral, suspension, and environmental survey data as we create a safe and welcoming learning environment for all students. We will continue to implement the Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports Program (PBIS) school wide and we are working in collaboration with multiple stakeholders to continue our work with the “Anti- Bullying Task Force.”

Both of these programs align with our goals of creating a positive, healthy, and supportive school

environment. Specifically the “Anti-Bullying Task Force” supports the Montgomery County Public Schools Regulation JHF- RA, Bullying, Harassment, or Intimidation, which contains the following components as copied from the regulation:

• Professional Development activities for all staff members. • School wide prevention program (s). • Range of interventions for students who exhibit bully behaviors. • MCPS Form 230-35, Bullying, Harassment, or Intimidation Reporting Form, available at identified

locations in the school building. • Investigation of a report completed within two school days using MCPS Form, 230-36, Bullying,

Harassment, or Intimidation School Investigation Form. • Contact with parents of students involved in the incident within 24 hours of the completed

investigation. • Community Resource list provided to those who submit a bullying incident report form. • Individual conferences with the student who is bullied and the student who bullied two weeks and

again four weeks after the incident. I also want you to be aware that as these tight budget times continue, we appreciate the funding and support the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has received from the County Council. We recognize that it is imperative to use our resources in the most efficient and effective manner. MCPS staffing allocations are based on projected enrollment. We certainly hope that at the beginning of the school year our actual enrollment matches the projected enrollment. Unfortunately, as a result of this current fiscal situation, it may become necessary for staffing changes to occur in some schools if enrollment comes in below projection and doesn't justify the staffing that was allocated. If there is a need to make an adjustment in staffing based on actual enrollment, I will do my best to minimize the impact of these necessary adjustments. I will keep you informed and alert you to any changes that may occur at our school. I encourage you to read the information in this packet carefully. There are many important items such as dates, bus routes, sports information, arrival groups and locations for students during orientation and first day of school, and Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) information. Please pay close attention to the 6th Grade Student Orientation Day only for 6th grade students on Thursday, August 25th from 7:30-11:40 am. We hope it will be another way to help our 6th grade students so their transition is smooth and supportive. The first day of school is Monday, August 29th. School begins at 7:55 a.m. and ends at 2:40 p.m. We will continue to live our motto by building relationships, increasing the rigor, and providing access and equity for all students to accel at high levels. From the first day of school through the last, you and your children will know “We A.R.R.E. Focused on Student Results, for Every Child, Every Day!” Live Well and Laugh Often,

July 2011

Dear Kingsview Families: Course-related fees are not charged for textbooks, supplementary readers (such as anthologies, atlases, or workbooks), most materials of instruction, audiovisual aids, stationery items not commonly found in the home and required for the student to demonstrate mastery of course objectives, or building or office materials needed to operate schools. The approved course-related fees primarily fit into three categories as follows: • Items consumed by the student as a part of the course (example: recipe ingredients). • Component parts of a product that will become student property (example: sculpting clay, model airplane kit). • Materials of instruction or items of personal use that become the property of the student for reasons of personal hygiene or industry standards (example: tap shoes). Students are still expected to bring individual organizational tools and personal supplies (such as notebooks, pencils, and paper) from home. In addition, there are student fees which are not course-related but area local school decision made by the principal in collaboration with the school and parent leadership. These may include fees for classes, special team activities, etc. There also may be fees related to field trips, but these will be shared each time there is a trip and not in advance as a course fee. In circumstances when a course is selected with a fee, we are committed to providing all students, regardless of their economic circumstances, with full access to all courses, including the instructional materials required for those courses and the instructional program. A student, his/her parent or guardian, or any student advocate may request an adjustment to the course fee. Please contact the teacher, the counselor, or the administrator who will work with you to meet your needs. You and your child will have options that include a schedule of payments, a reduced fee, or a complete waiver. If you have any questions regarding the course-related fees being charged at our school for the 2011–2012 school year, please contact me.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Thomas Principal

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY FEE REMITTANCE FORM The Montgomery County Board of Education requires payment of an Extracurricular Activity (ECA) fee for your middle or high school student to participate in extracurricular activities for the 2011-2012 school year. What is the ECA fee? The $30.00 annual fee supports adult-supervised extracurricular activities, such as sports and clubs, for middle and high school students. Students who pay the fee are entitled to participate in one or more programs during the year. Although the Board of Education strongly believes students benefit from participation in after school activities, these activities are voluntary. Who pays the ECA fee? All middle and high school students who voluntarily participate in sports or clubs pay the ECA fee. Check with your school administration to determine what other activities require the ECA fee. NOTE: Students may try out for sports teams before paying the fee. However, once they have been selected for a team or activity, the fee must be paid or the selection will be revoked. Paying the fee does not guarantee that a student will be selected for a team or activity, nor does it supersede academic eligibility requirements. Who is exempt from the ECA fee? Students who do not participate in extracurricular activities do not pay the fee. Students who take a course that requires participation in an extracurricular activity, such as a concert performance as a class requirement, do not pay the fee. Check with your school administration if you are unsure if an activity is exempt from the fee.

Am I eligible to pay a reduced ECA fee? You may be eligible to pay a reduced fee of $15.00 if your gross family income is less than $35,000. If you are eligible to pay a reduced fee, you must send written proof of income with your payment, such as a recent tax form, current pay statement, or letter from a family assistance agency. MCPS will NOT accept reduced fees without documentation. Do not send original documents, as we do not return them. How do I pay the ECA fee? DO NOT SEND PAYMENT TO YOUR SCHOOL. Credit Card – Payments are accepted online at: http://montgomeryschoolsmd.org/activityfee. This is a secure website. You will be sent a receipt by e-mail when you pay online. Reduced ECA fees are not eligible for online credit card processing and must be paid by check. Check – Make payment to MCPS and write student ID# on check or money order. Send payment directly to MCPS, ECA Office, 850 Hungerford Drive, Rockville, MD 20850. Returned checks are subject to a $25 fee. Cash – Payments may be made in person at the ECA Office, 850 Hungerford Drive, Rockville, MD 20850. If you have any questions, please call 301-517-5000. Sincerely,

Susanne G. DeGraba Chief Financial Officer

The  cafeteria  continues  to  offer  the  convenience  and flexibility  of  SNAP,  a  computerized  cash  register  system.  Depositing  funds  into  a  cafeteria  account  eliminates  the need for a child to carry money every day.   Students enter their  Personalized  Identification  Number  (PIN)  to  access their account.   The PIN for students returning to the same school  remains  the same.   New students  receive  their PIN on  the  first day of  school. Any money  left on  a  student’s account  last  year  is  available  for  spending  this  year.  Prepayments to a student’s account may be made prior to the start of school.  To make a prepayment:

Kingsview Middle School Athletic Department 18909 Kingsview Road

Germantown, Maryland 20875 (301) 601-4611

July, 2011

Dear Parents,

The Kingsview Middle School Interscholastic Athletic Program will begin on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. Interested 7th and 8th grade boys and girls may try out for the softball and cross country teams. The MCPS interscholastic athletic program is a planned extension of the physical education and intramural programs. The athletic program provides an opportunity for advanced skill development for students with interest and/or talents in athletics. Seventh and eighth grade students may tryout for softball and cross country (fall), basketball (winter), and soccer (spring). Sixth grade students are not eligible to participate in interscholastic athletics. An intramural program will be offered to accommodate the needs of Kingsview MS sixth graders. In order to tryout for softball in September, a student must meet the following requirements: • Return a signed parent permission slip to the Athletic Coordinator, Mr. MacKay. A student may have the

signed parent permission in their possession and submit the form at tryouts on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. You will find a parent permission slip attached to this letter.

• A completed MCPS Health Inventory Form must be on file in the School Health Room. The Health Inventory

must be signed by a physician within the last two years. There is a $30 student activity fee that is assessed by MCPS. The details are contained in a separate form that will be sent home with students during the first few days of school. Please follow the instructions in the mailer as it applies to your situation. One notable point is that you may tryout for the team prior to paying the fee and pay the fee after officially being selected for a team. Students who have not submitted the parent permission slip and health inventory form will not be eligible to tryout on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. Students may submit the form(s) the next day and attend the tryouts the next day. This will continue until tryouts have ended and the team has been selected. Practices will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:00 – 4:30 pm. Activity buses will be available for students who normally ride a bus to Kingsview MS. The Athletic Department is looking forward to an exciting year at Kingsview Middle School. Please feel free to call me at (301) 601-4611 if you have any questions. Brad MacKay Athletic Coordinator,

Kingsview Middle School
