Why you need a Will!Writing a Will is essential, however few people get around to doing it. In fact, over 75% of adults in the UK die without a Will.
A Will is often thought of as just the place where one distributes ones assets after death, but a Will also has a very important role to play, particularly for all parents with young children and especially for those who are not married.
Your Will is the appropriate place to appoint Guardians for your children in the event of both parents dying. If this is not done it may be down to the Courts to decide who your children will live with. It is also the place to ensure the fi nancial needs of both your children and the appointed Guardians. Trust Funds can be set up in your Will and used for the benefi t of your children. In your Will you also name the Trustees who are going to administer these funds.
Shortland and Sawbridge are a family business and are members of The Institute of Professional Will Writers. We specialise in writing Wills for people with young children. We are happy to provide you with more information on telephone 020 8397 5176 or email [email protected]
A special discount is available to readers of The Family Grapevine. If you mention this article when making your appointment we will write your Will for the special price of just £140 each or £160 for a pair.

POISONING
If poison is swallowed, the
child may:
be red around the mouth
have stomach pain
be nauseous or vomiti ng
Never try to make the child
vomit if they’ve swallowed
poison. Vomiti ng may make
the conditi on worse by
damaging the stomach and
the tubes that carry the
food to the stomach.

Over a million children every year visit an A & E department
following an accident in the home and more than half of
these children are under four. It is impossible to watch your
child 24/7 and there will always be an unguarded moment
but knowing what to do if an accident occurs can stop a
minor incident turning into something much more serious.
Amy Dopson, a fi rst-aid trainer and paediatric senior sister
in a Surrey hospital believes that parents need to familiarise
themselves with what to do if a child has a burn, because
immediate acti on can make a big diff erence to the outcome.
“If parents know what to do when a child burns or scalds
itself, we would have far less need for skin graft s and plasti c
surgery,” she says.
Treatment
Cool burn with cold running water for at least ten minutes.
If cold water is not available, use another cold, harmless liquid, such as milk
Get medical help for any burn or scald which is larger than a 50p coin
Remember to keep calm and give lots of comfort and reassurance to the child
DO NOT remove burnt clothing which has stuck to the skin. Burnt clothing is sterile and will protect the wound.
Remove carefully any jewellery, belts, restricti ve clothing or footwear (that is not stuck to the skin) from the injured area before it begins to swell
Cover the burn with a clean, dry, non fl uff y dressing and secure loosely. A plasti c bag or piece of cling fi lm is ideal
DO NOT put butt er oil or any sort of grease or loti on on a burn or scald – these can cause further damage and increase the risk of infecti on
DO NOT apply sti cking plasters or any other type of adhesive dressing to the skin – they will cause pain and damage when removed
DO NOT break blisters – you may introduce infecti on into the wound
DO NOT give the child anything to eat or drink if the child has facial burns or is having any diffi culty with their breathing. If in doubt wait unti l you have had medical advice before you give food or drink.
The above is not a substi tute for professional fi rst aid training. For details of paediatric fi rst aid courses in your area please call safe and Sound on 0208 445 8998 or go to www.safeandsound.uk.net
Most coughs and colds in healthy babies, toddlers and children aren’t serious and they generally get bett er in a few days.
The common symptoms of a cough and cold are the cough and a runny nose. The child may have a raised temperature, sore throat, ear ache, headache, be lethargic and off their food.
The symptoms are oft en worse for 2-3 days and make’s the child miserable, then the symptoms ease although an irritati ng cough may linger.
There is no magic cure for the common cold and treatment is aimed at relieving the symptoms rather than curing. As most coughs and colds are caused by viruses, anti bioti cs are ineff ecti ve.
When your child coughs or sneezes they send ti ny droplets of infected saliva into the air. To prevent the spread of the virus encourage children and adults to ‘catch it, bin it and kill it’. Children should use disposable ti ssues and cover their mouth and nose EVERY ti me they cough and sneeze. Use the ti ssue once and then throw it in the bin. Encourage your child to wash their hands regularly.
Regular paracetamol will help to reduce a temperature and ease a headache. Ibuprofen has the same eff ect. Alternati ng paracetamol with ibuprofen will give you 24hours cover. Remember to give only the recommended dose.
Encourage your child to have plenty of drinks and to keep warm by wearing several thin layers of clothes and removing a layer if they get too hot. Remember to not over-clothe your child as they can’t sweat to reduce their temperature and will become hot & bothered.
Children should get plenty of rest and sleep and take it easy if they feel unwell. They should be kept away from nursery and school unti l they feel bett er.
Plenty of fresh air and exercise as well as a healthy diet will boost your child’s immune system and may help prevent coughs and colds.
Most coughs and colds get bett er without complicati ons. However you should seek medical advice if your child has a persistent high temperature or does not seem to be getti ng bett er.

Mothering SundayThe correct name for Mothers Day in the UK is Mothering Sunday.
Mothering Sunday is always the fourth Sunday of Lent however as the dates vary as to when Easter and Lent fall the actual Sunday chosen to celebrate it may vary.
It is more often referred to as "Mother's Day" and it origin is distinctly different to Mothers Day in America although the sentiments are similar.
In Victorian times, it was a day when children, mainly daughters, who had gone to work as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother and family.
Today it is a day when children give presents, fl owers, and cards to their mothers.
History of Mothering SundayMost Sundays in the year churchgoers would worship at their nearest parish or "daughter church".
In olden times it was considered important for people to return to their home or "mother" church at least once a year. So each year in the middle of Lent, everyone would visit their "mother" church.
As the return to the "mother" church became an occasion for family reunions when children who were working away from home returned. (It was quite common in those days for children to leave home to work in service from ten years of age.)
The majority of historians think that it was this return to the "Mother" church which led to the tradition of children, particularly those working as domestic servants, or as apprentices, being given the day off to visit their mother and family.
This special day has now become a time when people give thanks to
their mothers and offers an opportunity to express both love and thanks for the work that they do.

Medical experts can’t say enough good things about exercising during pregnancy, as long as it’s moderate and doesn’t put you at risk of slips and falls. Acti viti es such as swimming, walking, and low-impact aerobics are good choices. Even if you’re normally quite supple, relaxin, a hormone which relaxes the pelvic joints in preparati on for childbirth, also loosens all ligaments and joints, making you more suscepti ble to sprains and other injuries. That’s why it’s doubly important to pick the right acti vity.

Party Time
PARTIES TO REMEMBER“Ten years of playing ‘What’s the time, Mr Wolf?’ or ‘Grandmother’s footsteps’ almost every week while watching the children’s reactions never fails to delight me,” says Rowena Bond, of Parties To Remember.
That’s partly because Rowena is never a stranger to the birthday child on the big day: she arranges a personal consultation to discuss traditional party games with parent and party child beforehand. Games that have entertained children for generations create laughter and excited chatter as the children go hunting, singing and join mystery games that can be played in or outdoors. Rowena provides all the prizes, including a fabric party bag. Food and piñata are optional extras.
Rowena started the business when the birthday parties she staged for her daughter became so popular in the neighbourhood that other parents said she should make a business of it. Now she gives parties all over the Greater London area.
