participated in the Bee. Without their support, talent and sense of fun, we would probably be the Grate Groan

The faces say it all!
The Cast and Crew
Kingston Literacy & Skills has been extremely fortunate to have the kind of steadfast support it’s had from the community over the last 21 years. It takes a small army of volunteers to run this event. Here are just some of the folks who play key roles in the Bee, many of whom have helped us out for years!
Shawna Langille
Chair
Jim Elyot Master of
Ceremonies
Carl Richards Master
Pronouncer
This was Jim’s 16th year as Master of Ceremonies! We are so lucky to have him. He keeps the Bee humming smoothly along, with his own brand of bee-musing humour. We grately appreciate Jim’s continued support. Keep on buzzing Jim!
No stranger to the Grate Groan-Up Spelling Bee, Shawna has been a team member since 2007. An excellent speller herself, Shawna has experienced her fair share of victory at the Bee. This year, however, she traded in her pencil and paper and graciously agreed to act as Chair of the Bee—or in other words, Queen Bee. Thank you Shawna!
The Judges
Rob Mooy (Kingston This Week), Lisa Ray (KROCK) and Tanis Fairley (retired school principal and social justice activist) are all seasoned veterans of the Bee and were back again this year for even more fun! They make sure teams don’t miss any letters and make the final decision on correct spellings. Thank you Rob, Lisa and Tanis for all your help.
Carl Richards has been “the voice” of the Bee for quite a few years now. We would really be at a loss for words without him. Grate job Carl!
...And Committee … A large part of why this event is so successful is due to the volunteer committee who organize it! These folks have been incredibly dedicated, hardworking and creative. While some might content themselves with a successful event, and leave each detail as it was the previous year, this committee consistently seeks out new elements, and works hard to make sure it is always fresh. Faces may change over the years, but one thing is certain: if you want into the hive, you have to have an adventurous spirit and a great sense of humour! • Shawna Langille (Chair) • Sue Forgues (Secretary) • Deb Fell (Prizes) • Leonore Foster (KL&S Board) • Sam Kalb (Word Committee) • Barb Love (Word Committee) • Donna Vinkle (KL&S Staff, 2015 Bee Coordinator) • Irene Casey (KL&S Staff) • Donna Perrin (ED, KL&S)
… And Volunteers Too ...
Where would we Bee without our terrific volunteers? Many wonderful people helped us out on the night of the Bee, and we would have been lost without them. Thank you!
Want into the Hive?
The Grate Groan-Up Spelling Bee Committee are dedicated folks who know how to work hard and
have fun at the same time. If you are interested in being a part of this committee, information will be
available on our website in the fall. We are always on the look out for new workers and drones!

The Last Word
While the Bee is a wonderful event, and tons of fun, it also serves a couple of very important purposes. The Bee helps to raise critical funds for our programs, which include Literacy Basic Skills (LBS) for adults, one-to-one tutoring, Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) and Family Literacy. The Bee helps to increase public awareness about Kingston Literacy & Skills, and literacy issues in general. The more people who know about both, the better.
Thank you for your interest in both the Bee and Kingston Literacy & Skills!
