God expresses sorrow when we sin

The goal of discipline is to help our children change their hearts as well as their behaviour. When misbe-haviour requires discipline, one of the ways to touch a child’s heart is to respond with sorrow instead of anger. Sorrow expresses a disappointment in the re-lationship, whereas anger can be a type of revenge to get back at someone for an offense committed. Anger builds walls between people but sadness or sor-row, on the other hand, opens doors in relationships. It touches the heart of a person. When a child sees disappointment in a parent’s eyes, it is often a pow-erful motivation for the child to want to change. All children want their parents to be proud of them, not disappointed.

“But I’m not sad, I’m mad!” you may be saying. Try to look past your anger. You are sad because of what this negative pattern will do to your child if not ad-dressed. You can see future consequences and know where this course of action is heading. Sadness is there. It’s just covered up by your anger.

The same thing can be true in family life. Let your child see your disappointment and why it hurts you. That alone is a powerful motivation for children to change their hearts. “I’m really sad that you’re acting so selfishly”, or “I am so disappointed and upset right now, we need to talk about this another time”.

Strategy for the week: Be careful you don’t lay a guilt trip on your children by pretending you are sad. Sincere sorrow touches the heart so don’t be afraid to show it. Your genuine concern for your children will go a long way to foster closeness with them.

Boat Building at Noah’s Ark

Some cardboard boxes were the stimulus for crea-tive boat building in the Possums room last week. Lots of problem-solving took place as children worked out how to put the boat together and what was needed in a boat (a steering wheel was important!). Through co-operation much was achieved. It didn’t matter that the boat finally collapsed because so much learning occurred in this process.

Peer PressureThis article is from a package I received from Michael

Grose. It has some very worthwhile suggestions.

Young people generally want to fit in to their various social groups so peer approval is a significant driver for their behaviour. For a young person, resisting peer influ-ence can mean isolation or instant ostracism so it takes great strength of will to refuse to follow the crowd.

While the increased influence of peers is a normal part of a young person’s development they sometimes need help to resist the pressure to conform that is placed on them.

The following ideas may assist you to help young peo-ple resist unwanted peer pressure:

1. Talk about peer influence with young people (from a young age). Be open and frank about the subject. Let them know that while much of the influence of their friends is positive, some is not in their best interests.

2. Help young people say no – and save face and status among their friends. Allow them to blame you for not letting them do something they don’t feel com-fortable with.

3. Encourage them to think through the consequences of their decisions. When young people are put on the spot they should think about the risk factors in-volved. Encourage them to think, “Is this behaviour smart? Is it in my best interests?”

4. Avoid making your young person reliant on the ap-proval of others, including you, as the basis of their self-esteem. Allow them to feel comfortable hold-ing opinions and views that are different to yours.

5. Avoid criticising your teenager’s friends, as he or she may take it personally. Talk about behaviours rather than personalities when you discuss their choice of friends.

I trust you will find some of these suggestions very use-ful. From a very young age, I think it is important to speak with children about observed behaviours of other children which are not considered acceptable in your family. This encourages children to be discerning and to choose friends wisely. Being able to choose the “right” friends is so important especially when children come to the teen years.

Norman are Club Red Youth Ambassadors for the Australian Red Cross Blood Service. They have taken the initiative and responsibility of raising awareness of the ongoing need for blood donations in Australia. As one in three Australians will need blood and only one in every thirty donate blood, eligi-ble students, staff members and parents are encouraged to donate blood at the Robina Blood Donor Centre. The King’s Club Red is competing against other local schools on the Gold Coast for the highest amount of blood donations. If you are interested, we have established a King’s community group named 4RKCG that you can donate to. Do something special and give blood today because an hour of your day can save three lives.

Total Football AcademyTotal Football Academy will be running the popular After

School soccer program in Term 2 at Kings Christian College for Prep to Year 4 pupils. A free demonstration for Prep - Year 3 will take place on Thursday 5th of May during PE lessons. Information/registration forms will be distributed during this time. During the six week program games will be played inside the inflatable soccer field, which captures the imagination of young students, giving them a great Soccer experience. Training will take place inside a skills square focusing on different skills each week such as passing, turn-ing and shooting. As part of the program players also re-ceive a free soccer kit (top and shorts). The six week pro-gram starts on Monday 16th of May, 3.15pm - 4.15pm. From 2 Corinthians 11:23-27 we know that these afflic-tions included beatings, stonings, shipwrecks, perils, weari-ness, toils and hunger and yet Paul shrugs this off as “light”. Compared with this, what really is any mild persecution or problem that we may be facing? And what is our attitude in the face of such affliction? How many of you have had to suffer stonings or beatings for the Gospel’s sake? How many have been through hunger or shipwreck for Christ?

Our cross is light because the yoke of Jesus is easy. Do you know what taking up your cross is? “Take up your cross and follow me.” Following is taking up our cross, because one of life’s greatest temptations is not to follow God’s will in our lives. The devil is persistent in his attempts to dissuade you and me from fulfilling our destinies and will continually attempt to divert us from our God-ordained paths.

Do not be ignorant of the devices of the evil one but rather determine today to know God. Know His Word and fulfil His plans for your life. Follow Christ.

National Scholastic Athletic Championships – Gold MedalsJade Brandt and Demii Maher-Smith went to Sydney recently to participate in the Na-

tional Athletic Championships at the Olympic venue. Demii won GOLD in the triple jump and gained a silver in the long jump. She is presently waiting to see if she has qualified for the World Youth Olympics or the Junior Commonwealth Games. What a fantastic effort!!

Jade was a member of the 4 x 400m Queensland relay team that won the gold medal.Both Jade and Demii in Year 12 have been wonderful ambassadors for King’s and we con-

gratulate both girls on their achievements. They have consistently been among the elite athletes in Australia and they have always represented King’s with distinction. Excellent work, girls!

Regional TrialsFollowing on from the Hinterland trials King’s sent a number of students to trials for the

South Coast teams.

Australian RulesThree King’s students, Billy O’Donnell, Dylan Mutu and Reith Fraser trialled for the South

Coast team. We congratulate both Billy and Dylan who were named in the squad to contest the Queensland Championships. Unfortunately Reith just missed selection in the team.

We congratulate all boys on a successful day as their Hinterland team won the carnival for the first time. Well done, boys!

BasketballDanielle Pautschnig attended the U/19 basketball trials and missed selection. Fortu-

nately she can try again next year. We commend Danielle’s effort. Well done!

SoccerWe congratulate Veneesha Robertson who was selected in the U/19 South Coast team

that will contest the Queensland championships. Veneesha, a skilled footballer, repeated her performance from 2010 to again be selected for the open team. She is still only in Year 11. Well done to Veneesha!

Unfortunately, Elizabeth Charleson, Holly Hamilton and Mikayla Soper all missed out on selection. Elizabeth Charleson did well to gain selection in the possibles and probable games. Well done to all four girls for their effort on the day.

Alistair Davis also made the U/19 boys side. Alistair a talented striker / midfielder did well to be selected. His Hinterland team were undefeated and we wish him all the very best as he prepares for the Queensland Championships. Well done, Alistair!

HockeyOlivia Otto went to the district trials last week and progressed through to the regional

trials last Monday. There were about 40 girls from the coast ready for the trials for the U19 team and Olivia was the youngest there. She played three trial games and was selected in the final cut to play in the “possible and probable” play off to select the final team.

There has also been a hockey academy started on the Gold Coast by Hockey Queensland and this academy has five levels of ability. Olivia has been invited to join in level 2 which is the level before the national players. Also she is coming up for selections for her age group, under 13s, to represent the Gold Coast region at state comps in June school holidays for a week in Gympie.

Great work, Olivia. VolleyballWe congratulate Benjamin Crediton who was selected as a shadow player for South Coast

in the U/15 volleyball. Benjamin was selected for the Hinterland District team and last Monday was named as a shadow player to contest the Queensland Championships.

Grace Bell also attended the trials but missed selection in the U/15 girls team. We com-mend her for her effort and determination on the day. Well done, Grace!

Cross – Country TrainingWe continue to prepare for our annual cross country carnival that is to be held on Thursday April 7th. Training has started.

All high school students are welcome. We start at 7.30am at the high school office on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

JAG’s NetballTwo of our Year 8 girls have been selected in the JAGS team to represent Gold Coast at the Queensland Championships. We

World Vision thanks King’s Christian College In 2010 King’s Christian College students opened their hearts to support World

Vision projects in Cambodia, Laos and Kenya. The money raised was for families in desperate need.

I was privileged to witness first hand how this money is changing lives in Laos early this year and want to thank your school community from these families for your gifts that are transforming their communities.

Their biggest challenge is food security and having enough food to eat, to address this issue World Vision has livestock banks where goats, pigs and fowls are shared amongst the villages, seeds and education on how to diversify their crops and Food for Work programmes so they can improve their roads and bridges to allow access to markets, schools and hospitals.

The next exciting improvement I was privileged to visit a Mother and Child Health Clinic which is saving lives and improving the health of whole communities, also a primary school where I was able to help out.

I have so many stories to tell of how far your donations have gone in making this world a better place for the families I met in Laos. Thank you so much!
