‘DAVID SHEPHERD - The Man Who Loves Giants’

The late David Shepherd CBE FRSA FGRA really was a man who loved giants and quickly rose to world-wide

fame when he exhibited his wildlife paintings at an exhibition and sale in New York. From that successful

exhibition he was able to purchase two steam locomotives from British Rail and save them from being scrapped. He developed his love for steam by starting his own railway

in East Somerset at Cranmore bringing joy to many thousands of people where he would often be seen

greeting people and signing prints.

This programme is presented by film actor James Stewart and begins in David’s beloved Africa where he

developed his passion for conservation. The film captures the moment when David was asked by the RAF

to reproduce, on canvas, the refuelling of an aircraft in flight. His great passion for steam is seen when he purchased his two locomotives which survive today for

people to enjoy. DVD, 50 minutes duration - £14.95

‘The Barry Story’ - Including the eleventh edition of The Barry List’ New Edition. Compiled by Martin Beckett and Roger Hardingham. A paperback containing the story of how the town and port at Barry became so involved in the steam locomotive scrapping business. The book traces the beginnings of the town and the importance of Barry as a major coal exporting port in the early 20th century. The demise of the coal trade in the 1950s left many vacant sidings in the dock areas and these allowed the new business of scrapping wagons to commence in large numbers. The book looks at the growth of Woodham Brothers at Barry and how they started in the recycling of ship’s materials and then, from 1959, the purchase of wagons, carriages and locomotive. Full details of all loco-motives coming to the various yards

at Barry from 1959 and those which were scrapped. Includes the 11th edition of ‘The Barry List’ which lists full details of all the 213 locomotives saved and the current total of steamed engines to April 2017. Book 96 pages, £8.95

‘Strictly Bulleids’ An extra special programme to celebrate the Strictly Bulleid Spring Gala at the Swanage Railway. Timed to commemorate the end of steam on the Southern Region of BR in July 1967, the Swanage Railway arranged for five Bulleid light pacifics to operate an intensive service over three days on 31st March to 2nd April 2017. With the branch line through Purbeck now operational as far as Frome river bridge near Worgret, some stunning scences were possible on this new section and the Bul-leids certainly showed their paces! The collection of locomotives was carefully planned to bring in engines from all over Britain. ‘West Country’ Class No. 34092 City of Wells had the longest

journey from Bury in Lancashire with ‘Battle of Britain’ Class Nos. 34053 Sir Keith Park and 34081 92 Squadron coming in from the Severn Valley Railway and Nene Valley Railway. Final contestants were ‘Battle of Britain’ Class No. 34070 Manston, one of the home fleet at Swanage and main line runner ‘West Country’ Class No. 34046 Braunton, currently running as No. 34052 Lord Dowding. 50 minutes £12.95

‘Settle-Carlisle Revival ’ Britain’s favourite and most scenic railway - the Settle to Carlisle line - was severely distrupted in early 2016 when flooding caused by Storm Desmond hit the whole northern area of Cumbria. This programme looks at the effort to solve the crisis through film taken from the area by Network Rail and the contractors. We see the triumphant re-opening train hauled by Flying Scotsman on 31st March 2017. We also review the milestones achieved on the Settle-Carlisle since its reprieve from possible closure in 1989.

Film of works taking place to renovate stations, renew track, new train services including new freight flows. We see up-to-date steam-hauled charter trains which now form a major part of the line’s activities. A detailed review of the Northern Rail timetabled steam trains in February 2017 hauled by the UK’s newest locomotive, No. 60163 Tornado which highlighted the railway to the nation prior to the line re-opening again. 50 minutes £12.95

‘Archive programmes’ ‘The Somerset & Dorset remembered’ Here is a vivid reminder of what it was like to travel over that most lamented of cross-country railway lines the Somerset & Dorset. Filmed mostly during the summer of 1965, the final full year before closure in March 1966, the journey takes the viewer on the line from Bath to Evercreech Junction, then along the branch to Highbridge and Burnham, before returning to the main line to con-tinue a journey southwards from Evercreech to Bournemouth. But rather than just filmed from the lineside, many sequences were taken from the footplate or from the carriage window. During the journey the opportunity is taken to ‘stop off’ by means of a series of cam-eos – to recall such memories as ‘road versus rail’ at Radstock and an evocative look at the evening Bath to Binegar train arriving at its destination and, at dusk, preparing for the return run. This dvd is based around original film made by the British Aircraft Corporation Railway Society Film Unit and by Peter Barnfield and David Williams. ‘recollections of the Somerset & Dorset’ Memories from railway men and women operating the Somerset & Dorset Railway. No other railway in Britain commands such an interest as the Somerset & Dorset. 110 minutes duration £14.95

It is produced in association with the Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust based at Washford on the West Somerset Railway. TheWye TourA delightful scenic tour down the

Wye Valley.Filmed over the seasons

this DVD explores the River Wye

and the surrounding towns, villages

and countryside from Ross-on-Wye

to Chepstow where the river reaches

the Severn estuary. We retrace some

of the steps of Georgian travellers

who took a boat ride down this

magnificent section of the Wye -

becoming, many believe, the first

tourists in Britain. On the way we

meet local people associated with

life on the river, including a gillie

who explains the attraction of the

River Wye to fishermen. Sequences

of the river take us down towards

Monmouth and the modern use of

the Wye for leisure, now an

important part of the local economy.

We view the town of Monmouth

before progressing down the Wye

where we catch glimpses of the

river’s industrial past at Redbrook

and Brockwier. The disused railway line which followed the river all the way

to Chepstow still has its redundant monuments on show in the form of

elegant Victorian bridges. We then progress to Tintern, one of the most

sought after places of interest in the original ‘Wye Tour’. We end our

journey at Chepstow and the point where the Wye joins the Severn.

Altogether, a wonderful journey

along this spectacular river.
