Kingdown Week Friday 6th July 2018 Number 34, 2018 Kingdown School managed to qualify for the annual prestigious School Games Competition at Marlborough College. The Year 10 Rounders Team, knew that they would be facing some of the toughest teams in the County. Each game was going to be a battle. The first game was against St John’s, Marlborough which came to be our closest match. Captain, Evie Spratt, won the toss and elected to field first. St John’s had some BIG HITTERS and scored a total of 5 in their innings. Kingdown started nervy and didn’t start particularly well. However, within a few minutes, Phoenix Wicheard, Bea Topham, Gaby Ilic and Alyssa Samante all managed to score well and got us across the line with only seconds to spare. The final score Kingdown School 5.5 vs 5 St John’s School Marlborough. The second league game saw us face Abbey Park who had also won their first game. Kingdown were in no mood to be nice and brutally fielded, getting 3 players out in a row (and 6 out of the 9 out in total). Naisha Desouse fortuned from some poor fielding work and Phoenix Wicheard, again smashed the ball all over the field scoring for fun. Kingdown School 6.5 vs 4.5 Abbey Park. The third game was a close encounter against Trafalgar School who had scored a lot of rounders throughout their initial 2 matches, so Kingdown needed to be on top form. Trafalgar managed to score 6.5 rounders which was a daunting total to chase. No one from the Kingdown team batted particularly well, only picking up the odd 0.5 rounders on occasions. Hope Hann Farmer, Gaby Ilic and Beth Benoit all falling victim to their strong fielding. Mr Richardson encouraged the team to “risk it” with only 2 minutes to go. Kingdown School 7.5 vs 6.5 Trafalgar School. Hardenhuish (known to have a strong team) were our final league fixture so the girls were told to step up their game. The first two Hardenhuish players were caught out by Evie Spratt and by all accounts didn’t really hit many rounders due to brilliant bowling from Gaby Ilic, scoring a total of 4.5. Kingdown School knew their target and chipped away by gaining multiple half scores, with Evie Spratt and Beth Benoit scoring the highest. The final score Kingdown School 8 vs 4.5 Hardenhuish. Kingdown came top their group and moved into the Semi-Final. Sheldon School were the next opposition (again holding a very good reputation for their fielding). Phoenix Wicheard, Emily Naigunugunu, Bea Topham, Alyssa Samante and Gaby Ilic all falling victim to either catches or being stumped out on first base. However, Kingdown still managed to score highly; with Hope Hann Farmer and Naisha Desouse performing as our biggest scorers. Eventually, the match wasn’t even close due to outstanding fielding from all (in particular Emily Naigunugunu, Evie Spratt and Bea Topham, who was voted as player of the match by Sheldon). Kingdown School 7.5 vs 2.5 Sheldon School. The FINAL vs John of Gaunt, to whom the girls had lost to in a West Wilts fixture earlier in the year. Another close game was expected by the Kingdown girls who played fantastically well. One final game to win the trophy? Kingdown lost their first two batters due to being caught out. A further four players followed in the next few rounds of batting without scoring. Bea Topham was on fire and scored well, as did Evie Spratt who managed to get us to a total of 4.5. JoG however, could not break through the incredible effort being put in by all players. Bea Topham was diving around catching the ball; Evie Spratt making the correct decisions and all of the deep fielders moving towards the ball and backing up effectively. Kingdown School 4.5 vs 3 John of Gaunt. Kingdown School WIN the entire tournament for the first time! Congratulations girls. Fully deserved WILTSHIRE CHAMPIONS! Bea Topham = 5 Phoenix Wicheard = 8.5 Emily Naigunugunu = 1 Hope Hann Farmer = 5.5 Beth Benoit = 2 Naisha Desouse = 4.5 Alyssa Samante = 2 Gaby Ilic = 4 Evie Spratt = 5.5 Kingdown Conquer School Games Rounders Tournament
