2.0 Grooved Pipe Coupling System
General Information
The Shurjoint* grooved and hole-cut couplings and fittings available from King Systems
provides you and your customers with a high quality advanced mechanical piping system
with proven versatility and reliability. King grooved pipe coupling products are suitable for
use in a variety of piping applications which include industrial fluid transport, fire protection,
heating, and air conditioning. King grooved systems offer a fast and easy assembly system,
that can be installed 3-4 times faster than welding, and is more reliable than threading or
flanging. The result is that using grooved pipe systems gives the lowest total installed cost,
saving in both time and money.
The King Systems range of couplings are designed to mechanically join standard roll-
grooved or cut-grooved pipe. The pressure responsive rubber gasket provides a leak-tight
seal when the housing segments are tightened. Pipe end preparation is fast and easy and
can be done in the workshop or on the job site. A Grooved system is an ideal means of
connecting pipe utilising roll-groove technology.
An extensive range of hole-cut mechanical tees provides a fast and easy method to install
mid-point branch lines and outlet connections without welding. A hole is first cut or drilled
at the desired outlet location. The mechanical tee is then positioned in place. As the
housing is tightened the pressure responsive moulded gasket moulds to the pipe OD,
forming a leak-tight seal.
King System flange adaptors from grooved components or pipe adapt to or make direct
connections to ANSI Class 125 or Class 150, PN10, PN16 and Table E flanged components
within a grooved piping system. This allows for fast and easy connections to valves, pumps
and flanged piping systems. A full line of Grooved fittings and components including short
radius bends and threaded branch reducing tees are supplied to satisfy the widest range of
piping applications.
Manufacturing processes meet or exceed the ISO-9002 quality assurance standards
and are certified by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance Ltd. (LRQA). To allow use in
fire protection, King systems products intended for this application have also passed the
performance requirements of UL, UL of Canada, FM, LPC and VdS. This is your assurance
that King products are manufactured to internationally recognized quality standards. Our
strict quality control system ensures continued product performance and reliability. For
information on Approvals listings for individual products contact your King Distributor.

Coupling HousingsAll housing segments are made of ductile iron conforming to ASTM A536 Gr.
65-45-12 or BS EN 1563-97 Gr. EN GJS 450-10 and have a minimum tensile
strength of 65,000 psi (448 Mpa). The strength of the housing exceeds the
rated working pressure by 4-5 times. In the foundry each melting charge and
pouring batch is monitored and tested using the most advanced computerized
testing equipment. Couplings and fittings are available painted Red (RAL
3000), hot dipped galvanized or epoxy finished. The SS-8 Range of stainless
steel couplings are ideal for joining thin wall stainless steel pipe.
Rigid Couplings and Flexible CouplingsKing systems offers you both rigid and flexible type couplings to meet your
specific piping requirements. Either type of coupling can be used in
applications where rigidity or flexibility are not important design factors.
Both types of couplings use the same Standard or GapSeal™ rubber gaskets
and can be used on standard roll or cut grooved pipe. To ensure correct
coupling selection consult pressure ratings.
Flexible CouplingsKing systems flexible couplings can be used in a variety of piping
applications such as commercial, industrial, mining, construction, process
piping, fire protection and other applications where controlled angular, linear
and rotational movement is desired. Flexible couplings also provide excellent
noise and vibration attenuation characteristics, though these features need
to be considered when determining hanger and support spacing and
location. The Class 7705 is recommended for moderate pressure services
while the Class 7707 is recommended for higher pressure services.
Rigid CouplingsBoth the Class 7771 and K-9 couplings provide a rigid, locked-in connection
and are recommended in applications where minimal expansion, contraction
or linear movement is desired. Both couplings are useful in mechanical
rooms and risers where rigidity is required. The Class 7771
is designed for use in moderate or higher pressure applications, while the
Class K-9 is designed for use in moderate or lower pressure applications
such as fire protection services.
The rigidity in these couplings is achieved by a number of built-in teeth
(“Dogtooth”) that firmly grasp the pipe, thus eliminating undesired flexibility
and by the tongue and groove(T&G) mechanism that can accommodate a
range of pipe grooves that may not always be consistent due to the machine
or operator.
All sizes of the Class K-9 and all sizes up to 8” of the Class 7771 feature
both the “Dogtooth” and the T&G mechanism. Class 7771 sizes 10” and
above features the T&G mechanism.
The rigid couplings are designed to provide rigidity to permit hanging to
ANSI B31.1 Power Piping Code, ANSI B31.9 Building Services Piping Code
and NFPA 13 Sprinkler Systems.
The coupling is designed so that the housing keys fit into and securely grip
the full circumference of the grooved pipe. When the housing segments are
tightened around the pressure responsive gasket the result is a strong leak-
tight seal. ISO certification and our dedication and commitment to quality
assure you will be connecting with the best.
Grooved End FittingsA comprehensive range of grooved end
fittings are available providing the ultimate in
flexibility. Installation is fast, simple and reliable.
The grooved system technology, creating a
union coupling at every joint means system
change, extension and maintenance could not
be easier. The range of short radius fittings
optimises system design where space is restricted. Fittings are available
painted Red (RAL 3000), hot dipped galvanized or epoxy finish.
GasketsGaskets utilised in the King Grooved System are designed to provide a
pressure responsive leak-tight seal. The gasket is first stretched over the
adjoining pipe ends between the grooves forming the initial seal. The
housing segments are then positioned around the gasket and into the pipe
grooves. As the housings are tightened the pressure responsive gasket is
compressed to form the leak-tight
seal. The strength of the seal is further
enhanced by internal line pressure
that creates downward pressure on
the lips of the gasket. The gasket also
seals well under vacuum conditions
(up to -10 in. Hg or -35 kPa) that may
occur when a system is drained.
Gasket SelectionTo assure the maximum gasket life for your intended service, proper gasket
selection is essential when ordering. Many factors must be considered when
determining the best gasket for the intended application. The most important
factors are those of temperature, concentration of product, and duration and
continuity of service. Higher temperatures act to degrade and reduce the life
of the gasket, thus careful consideration should be given to any applications
where high temperature service is a
constant factor. Recommendations to
assist the choice of gasket are included
on page 27-28 of this catalogue.
Bolts and NutsKing Grooved pipe Couplings utilize carbon steel oval neck track bolts
and heavy-duty hexagonal nuts. The bolt materials conform to ASTM A449
(A183 Gr. 8 for 3/4“ bolt sizes and larger) or BS970 Part1 (Gr.605M36
or Gr.709M40) and have a minimum tensile strength of 110,000 psi (758
Mpa). The bolts are heat-treated and zinc electroplated. Hot-dipped zinc
galvanized bolts and nuts are also available upon request. The oval neck
track bolts mate into the oval holes in the housings to allow for easy
tightening using only a wrench.
Approvals and ListingsAll products are subject to strict quality control including hydrostatic testing.
Where applicable King systems products have also been submitted to UL,

The King grooved piping system is simply the most versatile, economical
and reliable system available. This system can be installed 3-4 times faster
than a welded system and offers clear benefits to the designer, installer and
owner. Whether you require flexibility or rigidity, have concerns with seismic
stress, electrical continuity, noise and/or vibration attenuation, the King
System range caters for your needs. The grooved system technology is
unmatched for ease of access for cleaning, maintenance, design changes
or system extension.
RigidityWhere a rigid connection is desired
we recommend the King rigid
coupling, Class 7771 or Lightweight
Rigid Coupling Class K-9. The unique
Dogtooth™ design in combination
with positive locking tongue and groove feature provides positive clamping
of the pipe to resist torsional and/or flexural loads. Bolts must be tightened
equally and evenly such that the gap between bolt pads are the same width
for optimum performance.
Internal & ExternalRestraintThe coupling keys engage the full
circumference of the grooves. This
provides significant pressure restraint
and end load capabilities to withstand
pipe movement from various internal and external sources.
Easy AccessWith the removal of just a few bolts
the Grooved System technology
allows easy access to the system
allowing for cleaning, maintenance,
changes or system extension.
Piping systems must always be de-pressurized and drained before
disassembly and removal of components.
Housing Materials:
• ASTM A536-93: Specification for Ductile Iron Castings
• BSEN 1563-97 Spheroid Graphite Cast Irons. Type 316 Stainless Steel(ASTM A351 or A743 Gr.CF8M). Type 304 available on request
Rubber Gasket Materials:
• ASTM D2000: Classification System for Rubber Products in AutomotiveApplications
• BS2494: Elastomeric seals for joints in pipework and pipelines
• EN 681-1: Elastomeric seals – Materials requirements for pipe joint sealsused in water and drainage applications

FlexibilityWhere a flexible connection is
desired we recommend either Class
7705 or Class 7707. These couplings
feature excellent strength and
flexibility to deal with a variety
of factors including expansion, contraction and deflection caused by
temperature changes, seismic tremors and or other sources of vibration.
With the use of flexible couplings you may be able to reduce or eliminate
the need for expensive expansion joints, vibration attenuators or loops in
your system. Bolts must be tightened equally and evenly until the bolt
pads achieve firm metal to metal contact.
Alignment EaseThe King grooved system allows
for the rotation and alignment
of pipe, valves and fittings prior
to tightening the housing bolts.
This feature can also reduce tension
between piping components.
Noise & VibrationAbsorptionThe design and construction of a
grooved system utilizing elastomeric
gaskets reduces noise and vibration
transmissions.
Electrical ContinuityCouplings with rubber gaskets are likely to function as an insulator. Where
electrical continuity is required, our King electrical continuity clip (option) will
restore continuity to the system. The electrical continuity clip satisfies IEE
Wiring Regulations.

Reducing CouplingsClass 7706
1) Working pressure and/or End Load are total pressure and/or load permissible when mounted on standard weight steel pipe, standardroll or cut grooved. Test pressure fields may be increased to 1.5 times the max. working pressure shown above. For working pressurein other pipe schedules, contact your King Distributor for details.
2) Vds Listed to 2.0 MPa or1.2 MPa only.
The Class 7706 Reducing
Coupling allows direct
reduction on a piping run
and can eliminate the need
for a concentric reducer and
couplings. The specially
designed gasket prevents
the smaller pipe from
telescoping into the larger
pipe during vertical assembly.

Flange Adaptors and Flange WashersClass 7041-E
Closure Tabs
Integral closure tabs located on the flange OD help to facilitate
alignment and assembly. When required use a C-clamp, wrench or
pliers to draw the closure tabs towards each other until the flange
holes are aligned, then insert the bolt.
Flange Washer
The Class 7041 flanges require
a hard flat surface for effective
gasket sealing. A flange
washer is required and should
always be used when the
mating surface is not
adequate, for example the
serrated faces of some valves
or the rubber-faced or rubber-
lined flange of the wafer valve.
Important Notes
1. The Sealing Surface of the mating flange, the area shown
between D and E in the top illustration, shall be free from
gouges, undulations or deformities of any type to secure
optimum sealing.
2. Class 7041 flanges have small triangular teeth inside the
key shoulder to prevent the pipe from rotating. The teeth
should be ground off when mating to a rubber-lined flange,
and or light wall Schedule 5 pipe.
3. Class 7041 flanges require a hard flat surface for effective gasket
sealing. A flange washer shall always be used when mating to:
3-1) A rubber-faced or rubber lined flange, as widely seen in
wafer valves (lug valves): See illustration Note 3-1.
3-2) A serrated face flange: In this case, use a regular flange
gasket as well as a flange washer as illustrated in Note 3-2.

4. When attempting to use a Class 7041 flange against a butterfly
valve or ball valve, make sure that the outside dimensions do
not interfere with the valve actuator or valve handle.
5. Class 7041 flanges shall not be used as anchor points for tie-
rods across non-restrained joints. Do not use Class 7041 flanges
within 90 degrees of one another on standard fittings when the
outside dimensions cause interference.

Elbows TeesThreaded Branch Tees
A range of reducing tees with a choice of
grooved or threaded branch outlets are also
provided to give optimum versatility and
ease of installation.
Flow Data/Frictional Resistance(Expressed as equivalent length
of straight pipe)
The values listed in this table express the
frictional resistance of representative fittings
as equivalent meters (feet) of straight pipe.
For the branch of a tee that is reduced in
size, use the value that corresponds to the
branch size. For example, the branch value
of a 4" x 4" x 3" tee is 3.9 metres (12.8
feet). For fittings not listed in this table,
the equivalent length of straight pipe
can be estimated from the data provided.
For example, the flow resistance of a
22-1/2° elbow is approximately one half
that of a 45° elbow.

Bolt Fastening Torque for Mechanical Tees & Crosses, Class 7721, 7722 andSaddle-Let Tee Class 723
All mechanical tees and crosses are designed with a gap
between the bolt pads. Do not attempt to bring the bolt
pads together (metal-to-metal) when tightening the
housings. Excessive torque may result in joint failure.
Apply the recommended bolt fastening torque given in
the table below.

Mechanical Tee
The King System hole-cut mechanical tee provides a fast and easy
mid-point branch outlet without welding. First a hole is cut or
drilled at the desired outlet location. The mechanical tee is then
positioned so that the built-in locating collar fits within the hole.
As the housing bolts are tightened the pressure moulded gasket
forms a leak-tight seal. Use of the King mechanical tee can
eliminate the need for multiple couplings and fittings. Bolts should
be tightened equally and evenly.
A comprehensive choice of mechanical tees are available in
the King range:
Class 7721: Threaded outlet, NPT or ISO pipe threads
Class 7722: Cut-grooved outlet
Class 723: Saddle-Let; Small mechanical tee with
threaded outlet, NPT or ISO pipe threads
(For Fire protection and low to medium pressure applications).
Finished Painted Red, Galvanised or Epoxy Coated
Mechanical Cross Connections
A mechanical cross connection can be made by combining two
mechanical tee upper housing segments. While the housing
segments must be the same size the branch outlets can be of
the same or differing sizes and configurations as shown.
Caution: Piping practices require that main and branch
connections are at a true 90º angle. Also be certain that the
locating collar is securely positioned inside the outlet hole before
tightening the housing. When mechanical tees or mechanical
crosses are used as transition pieces between two runs, the tees or
crosses shall be assembled prior to making the branch connections.

Gasket Selection
To assure the maximum gasket life for your intended service,
correct gasket selection is essential. Many factors must
be considered when determining the best gasket
for the specific application. The type of fluid,
temperature, duration and continuity of service
are primary factors for selecting the optimum
gasket for a specific service. A guide to gasket choice
is given below and in the Recommendation List to be found in
the Design and Technical Information pamphlet, or if in doubt
contact your King distributor.
Specify the gasket when ordering and always check that the colour
code on the gasket is for the intended service before installation.
Table 1 Gaskets - General Data and Service Recommendations
Note
The temperature, chemical composition and concentration of the transported product and the in-service environment all affect the
durability of gasket compounds over time. Always refer to the Gasket Selection Guide in the Design & Technical Information handbook
before selecting the appropriate gasket and grade.
King System gaskets are not recommended for certain applications. If in doubt, or when the intended product, service condition or
temperature is not listed or recommended contact your King Systems Distributor for guidance. Ensure compatibility of the King Coupling
housing or fittings and any related components for the service application prior to use.
Notes. Elastometric Gaskets are unsuitable for use directly on rubber lined valves. It is recommended to use the GapSeal™ gasket for dry
fire sprinkler systems. All Gasket Styles are available in E, T, O, & L material grades.

Gasket Styles
Standard Gasket
Standard gaskets are the most commonly used both in rigid and flexible couplings,
and are suitable for a wide range of applications in fluid transport.
GapSeal™ Gasket
The GapSeal™ gasket has a solid centre leg that fits flush over the adjoining pipe ends.
When the coupling is tightened the gasket is compressed over the pipe ends forming a
leak-tight seal. The GapSeal™ gasket prevents fluid from entering the gasket cavity. The
GapSeal™ gasket is recommended for dry fire sprinkler systems, lined pipe connections
and other applications where fluid retention in the pipe line may be hazardous.
Reducing Coupling Gasket
The reducing coupling gasket features a unique built-in retainer, that prevents smaller
pipe from telescoping into larger pipe during vertical assembly. This gasket also provides
generous space for pipe insertion and can eliminate the need for steel plates or washers
which can hinder installation.
Flange Gasket
The Flange gasket is designed to seal on the pipe end and on the flange.
Suitable for the Class 7041 flanges only.
Outlet Coupling Gasket
Designed for use with Class C-7 outlet coupling. The gasket seals on the ends of the pipes
to be connected and also in the neck of the outlet.
Mechanical Tee Gasket
This C-shaped pressure responsive gasket is designed for use with Class 7721 and 7722
mechanical tees for sealing on the curved exterior of the pipe.
The Class 723 Saddle-Let gasket is an integral gasket consisting of a solid cylinder and a
curved fringe. This gasket seals on a wide range of pipe surface with permanent compression.

King Grooved products and Pipe Selection
King grooved pipe couplings are designed for use only with approved standard
and recommended pipe, grooved in accordance with the relevant published specifications
and with the King System range of grooved end couplings, fittings, and related grooved
end components. Unless specifically specified King grooved pipe couplings must not be
used to connect with plain end pipe and/or fittings.
Gasket Selection and Use
The correct gasket must be selected and specified to suit the application intended.
Full details are given of permitted applications and allowable service conditions for
different gasket types and materials in the Gasket Selection Chart included in the
Design and Installation handbook. If the intended service application is not included
in the Chart contact your King Distributor before proceeding.
Gaskets must always be lubricated with a thin, uniform coating of lubricant to assist
location and to avoid any pinching of the Gasket during assembly that may cause damage
or leakage. Use approved King Gasket lubricant or equivalent vegetable soap based
lubricant for wet systems. For dry systems silicone based lubricant can be used. Do not use
petroleum based lubricants under any circumstances.
The coupling gasket must be positioned centrally between the two pipe grooves and
without overlapping into the groove(s).
