ART
ACTIVITY MODULE:
PRIMARY COLORS AND SHAPES IN ART
Purpose- Use visual skills and hands-on activities to understand color and
shape
Applicable StandardsKindergarten to Third Grade: Students will use the ideas of system,
model, change, and scale in exploring scientific and technological
matters.
Describe changes in size, weight, color, or movement, and note which of their other
qualities remains the same. (SKCS4, S1CS4, S2CS4, S3CS4)
Kindergarten to Third Grade: Students will be able to communicate
scientific ideas and activities clearly
Describe and compare things in terms of number, shape, texture, size, weight,
color, and motion. (SKCS5, S1CS5, S2CS5, S3CS5)

Background
Henry Matisse is a famous French artist born in 1869. He is known for his mastery of color and is considered to be the founding leader of the Fauvist movement.
Other Fun Facts
His parents owned a flower shop.
He briefly studied law in Paris and worked as a court administrator.
Matisse and Picasso considered themselves to be both friends and rivals.
Piet Mondrain is a Dutch painter born in 1872. He is known as a leader in the de Stijl movement. His most famous piece is called Composition II in Red, Blue, and Yellow (1930).
Other Fun Facts
The White Stripes, an American rock band, entitled their second studio album “De Stijl” as a tribute to the movement.
“After 1919, he only painted in horizontal and vertical lines and used only the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue.”
To date, a “successful” forgery of a Mondrain painting has not been created.

Purpose
- Use visual skills and hands-on activities to understand numerals
Applicable Standards
Kindergarten: Students will connect numerals to the quantities they
represent. (MKN1)
First Grade: Students will estimate, model, compare, order, and
represent whole numbers up to 100. (M1N1)
Second Grade: Students will use multiple representations of numbers
to connect symbols to quantities. (M2N1)
Third Grade: Students will further develop their understanding of whole
numbers and decimals and ways of representing them. (M3N1)

Background
Jasper Johns is a famous American painter and printmaker born in Augusta, GA in 1931. His most famous work is Flag (1954), a painting he did after he had a dream of the American flag.
Other Fun Facts
He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom on February 11, 2011.
He is ranked as the 23rd most valuable artist by Skate’s with his collection being valued at $132 million.
He served time in the US Army during the Korean War.
