KINARALEADERSHIP PROGRAM

MAY 2015 INTAKE

Page 2: Kinara Leadership Development - May 2015 Intake

Our VisiOnKinara at Nairobi Chapel is a full-time, one year leadership development program designed to empower and instruct emerging leaders who are passionate about Jesus and intent on pursuing a life of ministry. Kinara is Swahili for ‘point man’ or ‘captain’, and we recognize the need for leaders to rise up and speak into the issues of the day and bring kingdom focused solutions. We also recognize that we have an international platform and extend our search to young people from beyond Africa to engage with us in this program and thereafter consider going back to their nations as missionaries and church ministers through our church planting initiative.

Our Ministry PhilOsOPhy Kinara at Nairobi Chapel draws inspiration and ministry philosophy fromMark 12:29-31 where Jesus in response to the Pharisees’ question as to what is the greatest commandment said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your strength … [and] Love your neighbor as yourself.” The training objective is to develop well rounded individuals in the following specific areas, which we call the 5Cs:

1. CONVITION: Pursuing a call to ministry is a matter of deep conviction and faith and we believe that a deep and vibrant relationship with Jesus is vital for leadership and for ministry. Our desire is that our trainees would know without a doubt what they believe, and allow their faith to influence their philosophy and approach to ministry. 2. CHARACTER: It is vital for every leader to be above reproach in all matters. Through personal mentoring and group discipleship, every intern is encouraged to focus on personal character formation as part of their training for ministry and leadership. 3. COMPREHENSION: We expose our trainees to different fields of learning to widen their understanding of scripture, ministry and culture. This is done through weekly classes, training seminars and other leadership forums where trainees wrestle with different leadership concepts. 4. COMPETENCE: We desire for our interns to have both the knowledge and the skills to serve competently in leadership and their area of spiritual gifting. The interns are attached to various departments and also serve high school and primary school ministries where they develop practical skills such as Bible teaching, leading prayer meetings and discipleship groups.5. COMPASSION: We recognize that the commandment to love God can only be fulfilled as we love our neighbor. Our convictions, knowledge and skills must all be translated into love and compassion for others. Our ministry context in Nairobi, and indeed the world over, includes poverty and sickness and many ills of society. We seek to display Christ-likeness in these situations by showing love and acceptance. For this reason, our trainees are involved in different aspects of mission work through the year, a highlight being an immersion mission experience in Kibera—one of the largest slums in Africa.

ANGELA NG’ANG’AA desire to know more about myself and discover my life purpose led me to apply for Kinara. I felt that even after finishing my law degree I needed to know God’s plan for my life. I was attracted to the program because of its foundation in strong Christian principles, to develop leaders not only for Kenya but global leaders. My vision is to be a world changer and to impact the lives of all the people whose lives I touch in a Christ centered way. I am intensely passionate about mentorship, personal development, and self discovery.

CAROL CHIMbA My desire to serve children through counselling stems from my own childhood experiences. It grew while serving at a children’s remand home as a counselling student intern. I desire to emulate Christ’s example: to reach out to the less privileged in society, especially children who wait with open arms for a loving embrace, to care for their hearts and direct the to Jesus. I believe Kinara will broaden my view of ministry, further equip me to achieve this and spread it to the world.

DAVID MUCHIRIGod has called me to use my passion and skills in the media field to reach out to the youth and advance the Gospel of Christ. For five years I was in dance ministry, we were involved in doing missions and events as we ministered through dance. During this time I was also part of the youth leadership at our church. After that season I worked as a gospel radio presenter at two radio stations in Juba, South Sudan. I hope to refine my skills at Kinara to be more effective and get a platform to put into practice God’s gifts in me.

DERRICk CHAHENZA(DJ MEllOPs)Music has always been a major part of my life which is why I joined DICE-the Nairobi Chapel Dance Ministry in 2006. After High School, I joined Mt. Kenya University to study I.T and that is where I discovered the desire to become a professional DJ. I enjoy working with youth and I look forward to using my skills as a DJ to serve, equip, empower and be a blessing to the young people I will interact with during my internship.

EVERLYNE NTHENYAHaving just completed my degree in Engineering, I felt God calling me to Kinara because of its intentional leadership development. I had the chance to lead and work with students on campus for a year, and seeing the transformation that happened for, through, and in Christ gave me the desire to want to be a better leader and to reach out more. I feel Kinara shall help me grow to be a stronger, more effective and efficient leader and together, we shall strive to know Christ and make Him known throughout all generations. This reflects my life goal.

EMILIE RObINSI grew up in a small tourist town in northern Wisconsin, USA. This is where I learned what love was through my family, beautiful forests and lakes, and a wonderful church. Since childhood I had a thirst for adventure: always climbing the tallest tree, finding the new “secret” places, hiking, swimming, camping—anything I could do to experience more of the world. Because faith was something we as a family regularly talked about, I found my love for God growing healthier as my intellect developed and good role models were placed in my life. As I am realizing what walking with the Lord actually means these last few years, my faith has become less word and thought and more deed, and I desire to continue walking in the Spirit as an Intern this summer.

FREDRICk MWANGIIt is through learning about the power of grace that I finally came down from my self-made throne and realized that my life was not about me but about Jesus. I came to understand that the only way to bring order into one’s life is through God’s grace and His favour. This realization gave me a different approach to my relationship with God and the desire to reach out to others like me. Having heard about Kinara and what it’s all about, I knew it was the right place for me to explore my desire to serve God and help others know Him.

FELIX ODONGOMy time with AIC Diguna led me to discover my passion for music and for the youth. As I got more engaged in ministry especially with mission outreaches and youth camps, I realized I needed to be better equipped for my passion. My vision is to have a generation of young men and women that are transformed by their knowledge of God, especially at the informal settlements (slum areas) where social vices (drug abuse, crime, etc) are so rampant. Kinara will provide a platform for me to not only put my passion and gifting into service, but also engage others in service for the Kingdom of God.

JAMES MERCIERI am currently finishing up my undergraduate studies in Christian Ministries and Biblical Studies. I grew up in different broken churches, which has given me a passion to create healthy church culture and community, especially in the area of youth ministry. The focus of a lot of my studies is on youth ministry done through a theological framework. Much of my theological reflection on the church has stirred an interest in me to be part of the way God is working through the global church. I feel that God is calling me to Kinara in order to learn how I can be a part of his work in a greater way. As well as to learn more specifically about how discipleship, formation, and outreach is done among students in Nairobi Chapel’s setting.

JEREMIE NDAbOI am an IT engineer from Congo and I’ve been involved in art since I was five years old which is when I learned to draw. However, it wasn’t until 2010 that I made my first steps towards exploring graphic design. Since then I am very passionate about web design and development and I am excited about using my skills for ministry. The best thing that ever happened in my life was for me to become a Christian. All I can say is that God’s grace found me and I am eager to serve Him. Before joining Kinara, I was serving in my church back home in the media department which gave me a lot of peace and joy. I look forward to engaging at Nairobi Chapel with my skills.

kELVIN MUCHUII grew up in a Christian family and community and that is where I came to learn about God’s love. It was in Primary School that I first felt God calling me to go to all people and share His love with them. In High School, this call was further clarified and I knew what God wanted me to do with my life. He guided me to Kinara where I will be equipped with skills to minister as well as lead others in doing the same. I believe that I will be exposed to people who need to hear Gods’s love and look forward to sharing my testimony with them.

MADELYN bREWERI am a Jesus follower, coffee lover, and peanut butter enthusiast who passionately believes that God instills unique talents in each of us. It is our jobs to reach outside our comfort zones to discover these talents and use them to glorify God. I felt God calling me to reach out of my comfort zone in order to develop these gifts from Him more. This led me to pursuing the Kinara Internship. This next year will be challenging, but I will continue to vibrantly adventure through life with my eyes fixed on God— for His ways are “far greater than we can fathom.” (Eph. 3:20)

MICHAEL GITARIHaving served as a worship leader for 15 years and a gospel artist, I realized that to be a quality and influential leader I needed to be further trained and equipped. I chose the Kinara program because of the impact I have seen it make in others and I knew it would provide an opportunity for me to grow in my gifts and skills. I look forward to participating in ministry and being transformed as I seek to transform the world around me. My mission is to discover and nurture the gifts and abilities God has given me for service in His Kingdom.

MOSES kIOkOPrimary school, high school, campus life then work life. Ordinary! I craved for the extra, just like you do, but knew that it was only accessible if I dared my PURPOSE. Having authored a book that seeks to answer real issues that teenagers face, I believe that through KINARA I will LEARN, GROW and be able to fully satisfy the God-inspired thirst deep within me. I seek to put out transformational content for tweens, teens and young adults within the extraordinary environment of Nairobi chapel, and its various church plants, consequently being part of the Christ inspired GREAT COMMISSION.

OLUNGA OTIENOMy desire for full-time in ministry was reawak-ened when I joined the Nairobi Chapel in 2014. I had taken a year to consider the direction I want-ed to take with my life and after graduating from Plug-In it became clear that God was calling me to work for Him. I am passionate about teach-ing God’s word to young men in marginalized parts of society, empowering them to be agents of transformation in their communities. I signed up for KINARA because it offered prospects for self-discovery and growth. I believe this will help me to figure out how I can best grow and utilize my skill set in accomplishing my mission.

WYCLIFF ODONGO After many years of serving in the youth and children’s ministry at CITAM Valley Road, I grown to have a strong desire to guide young people in following God’s direction. I specifically want to help them to refocus their desires for the greater good of God’s Kingdom. This led me to pursue counseling as a way to help meet them at their point of need. I joined The Kinara Program with the desire to be more equipped in leadership skills and to also gain skills in the area of counseling and refine my focus. I hope in this year to be totally sold into serving in full time ministry to bring more souls to him. I am looking forward to being completely used and to grow in service.

SAMSON kIbUNJAMy desire is to be all I can for God in His service. I got the calling after finishing my Plug-In last year. I was posted at blitz where I still serve. Therefore being in Kinara leadership program is a great opportunity for me to be equipped with the required spiritual tools and knowledge that will help me to reach out the boy child. I yearn to see responsible and spiritual dads that will hold our future generation with care.

STACY MUTAVESince high school I have always had big dreams to serve people who are at difficult conditions in their lives. During holidays in our church we used to go for social justice ministry in slums, prisons, and hospitals. I was filled with great compassion serving and encouraging them that God Has good plans for them, He knows them, and their needs. I shared with friends about my plans and through one of my friends learned about the Kinara Program. I am glad for this chance to grow and serve God through Kinara program. My dream is to serve Him with all the knowledge and skills I have learned, and also serve in a church on children missions for social justice.
