Though students are not in the classroom as the labour dispute continues, the School District No. 6 Board met this past Tuesday at Nicholson Elementary.

The ongoing strike/lockout was much under discussion at the meet-ing, says Board Chair Jim Jenkinson, including the teachers’ vote this

week to support sending the dis-pute to binding arbitration.

The Board is not in favour of that move.

“Our Board and the BC School Trustees Assoc. (as well as the BC Teachers Federation) support free, fair collective bargaining,” Jenkin-son said. “The recent BCTF offer to BC Public School Employers Asso-ciation to seek third-party binding arbitration is not collective bargain-ing. tlement now will allow all stake-holders to re-focus together on the long-term issues in public educa-tion.”

The Board passed a motion at the meeting to draft a letter to end

the labour dispute immediately, using all dispute resolution mecha-nisms; including mediation and around the clock bargaining with a total medial blackout. The letter will be addressed to the BCTF, BCPSEA and the Ministry of Education.

“Trustees are as frustrated as the public that the BCTF and BCPSEA have failed to reach an agreement after many months of negotiations,” Jenkinson said. “The parties re-sponsible for bargaining need to do whatever it takes to get an agree-ment.

Fall is here, but that doesn’t mean garden-ing season is over. Wild-sight and the Cranbrook Food Action Commit-tee’s next Edible Gar-dening workshop, run-ning September 16th and 17th in Kimberley and Cranbrook, will teach locals how to keep the harvest going through fall and into the winter. Extend Your Harvest, the third and final workshop in this year’s Edible Gardening series, will give local gardeners options to protect crops from the cold and tips for hardy

crops that thrive in our climate.

“With our cold cli-mate, it can be tough to eat fresh from the gar-den for more than a couple months” said Wildsight and CFAC’s Shannon Duncan, “but with a little bit of protec-tion from the elements, you can be eating fresh salad much later than you might think.”

The one and a half hour workshops will give details on row cover options, including frames and materials, cold frames, repur-posed cloches, mulch-

ing, and ways to com-bine multiple layers of protection for maxi-mum effect. Plant vari-eties that do well in local late-season conditions and timing for late sea-son harvests will be cov-ered, along with some tips for planning a long-season garden for next year.

“With the right vari-eties and timing you can harvest fresh veggies even when there is snow on the ground and the temperatures are below zero” said Duncan. “As usual, wisdom from local experts will be

shared throughout the workshops.”

The workshops will also cover seeds: how to save tomatoes and other seeds for next year from this year’s plants, which ones you can eat from your garden, and how to plant them this fall for a jump start next spring. As always, the Edible Gardening workshops are hands-on in the gar-den, so participants will get practice building a variety of cold frames, constructing a row cover tunnel and fer-menting tomatoes to save their seeds.

The workshops run from 6:30-8pm on Tues-day, September 16th in Kimberley at Wildsight’s Open Gate Garden on Rotary Drive and in Cranbrook on Wednes-day, September 17th from 6:30-8pm at CFAC’s Public Produce Garden on 18th Avenue North between 6th and 8th Streets. The work-shop cost is $10 with a work trade option avail-able and registration is online at Wildsight.ca/Garden or by calling 250-427-7981.

You could be eating fresh produce from your gar-den longer than you think.

“It helps to actually see it. It helps to walk around the facili-ties and understand what the physical restraints are and constraints.

“…We’re on time, on budget. Again, that was one of the things many years ago, it was on our capital budget and we came and did our tour and you could see something on paper, but when you see it in real life, it sprang to life.

We’re really happy with where it’s going and I think the addition of the electrical up-date is just as important as well.”

Halpenny was in town on Wednesday for an annual tour of IH facilities, a chance to meet with local doctors, IH staff and community leaders to identify and tackle issues.

“We’ve centralized services so very often people have to come to our sites, but with that centralization has come a lot more stability and quality, so transportation is an issue we hear about frequently,” Hal-penny said.

“The next thing we hear

about is physician recruitment and retention and specifically in the very, very rural areas. I know this community went through a tough summer with some family physicians leav-ing—compare that to a com-munity like Princeton, where at one time they had four doc-tors and are now down to one. So very often we will look at putting our priorities where the needs are the greatest for physician recruitment.

“It’s not only physician re-cruitment, it’s retention. Once we recruit someone, how do we make sure we keep them here, and that’s giving them working conditions that they look forward to and physical surroundings that are appro-priate.”

Cranbrook hasn’t been in-sulated from the physician shortage, something Halpenny described as a national and in-ternational problem. There are roughly 33 family physicians in Cranbrook and the IHA is working hand-in-hand with local politicians to entice and keep more family doctors in the area, Halpenny added.

“We’re engaging the Divi-

sions of Family Practice, IH is involved and the community is involved to participate in the recruitment. It’s important that we engage the community, be-cause it’s really important when people [physicians] come to a community and spend some time, that they don’t just walk around a hospi-tal.

“I think in the past, we didn’t pay enough attention to, if someone’s coming and they have a spouse, what’s that per-son going to do? If they have children, are there educational opportunities here, how do we put our best foot forward?”

Transportation and access to specialist services are a few other challenges that patients face in rural communities, however, technology is helping to solve some of those prob-lems.

“In health, we either do things to people or we move information. The tele-health initiatives are really helping people stay in their homes or their community while getting the services that they wouldn’t have had access to in the past,” Halpenny said.

5, board chair Frank Lento said he was not surprised by the re-sults of the vote by teachers.

On Tuesday, the Board of Education of SD5 went a slightly different route than SD6 and approved sending a letter to Fassbender (Minister of Education) and the BCTF urging an arbi-tration panel.

“Each side would chose a representative and then each repre-sentative would chose a chairman,” ex-plained Lento on Thursday. “Then it would be a panel for binding arbitration.

“The difference would be each party

would select an arbi-trator and then each arbitrator would se-lect a chairperson. It’s something that’s hap-pened in the past, years ago there would be arbitration panels to resolve disputes. So we sent that along for their consideration urging them to get the matter resolved.”

On August 5, Lento wrote the letter to Fassbender regarding the ongoing labour dispute.

“We wish to add our voices to the growing number of Boards across the province that are urg-ing government to reach a fair, negotiat-ed settlement prior to school start-up in September,” he wrote.

The letter went on to say that if an agree-ment can’t be reached, the board urges government to seek mediation or if necessary, binding ar-bitration.

“Our Board doesn’t see any long term benefits to a legislated resolution and antici-pates considerable damage if agreement is not reached prior to school start-up in September.”

Lento end the let-ter by saying: “Once again we remind gov-ernment that educa-tion is not a cost to be managed but an in-vestment to be made — in our children, our economy and our fu-ture.”

District Heritage Society/Kimberley Heritage Museum

Since the August 20th article, “Museum on the Move” appeared in the Bulletin, Kimberley Heri-tage Museum has had many inquiries about the Museum.

The Kimberley Dis-trict Heritage Society/Kimberley Heritage Mu-seum was formed in 1978 with the purpose of building a museum for Kimberley. Funds were raised, (approx. $129,000.) to pay for the construction of the Mu-seum, located in the Plat-zl on Spokane Street.

A museum is not just a random collection of items. The International Council of Museums de-fines it as a non-profit, permanent institution in the service of society and its development, open to the public, which ac-quires, catalogues, con-serves, researches, com-municates and exhibits the tangible and intangi-ble heritage of humanity and its environment for the purpose of education, study and enjoyment.

The Kimberley Heri-tage Museum fits all of the above criteria. Our Museum tells the story of Kimberley. It

holds the cultural wealth of our community in trust for all genera-tions.

The Kimberley Heri-tage Museum possesses information that enrich-es our community and the countless individuals who access that informa-tion, be it for genealogy, environmental assess-ment of a property or simply to satisfy their cu-riosity about a specific aspect of Kimberley’s his-tory.

The Kimberley Heri-

tage Museum is open five days per week, year-round, with the excep-tion of the last two weeks of December.

See Page 4Since the Museum

opened in 1980 we have averaged nearly 7000 vis-itors per year, not includ-ing those who accessed the archives for research. The Museum operates with volunteers and one paid staff member.

The Kimberley Heri-tage Museum’s collec-tion, as of Dec. 31, 2013, houses 9763 artifacts and 10307 archival photo-graphs. These items are used in our exhibits, which are changed throughout the year.

Many of these exhibits mark milestones in Kim-berley’s history, as a com-munity and its place in the world. For example, one current exhibit marks the 75th Anniversary of World War II and the 100th Anniversary of World War I. The Sullivan Mine played a major role in Canada’s war effort in both conflicts. Personnel who volunteered for ac-tive service and those who were deemed essen-tial to Kimberley Opera-tions did their part work-ing at the Mine and Con-centrator.

The Kimberley Dis-trict Heritage Society/Museum has undertaken many projects over the years, such as, moving and restoration of the North Star Schoolhouse, (subsequently donated to the Railway Society); the erection of a replica of an original North Star Mine Tram Tower, in conjunction with the BCMR; refurbishment of old mining equipment from the North Star and Stemwinder Mines, (also donated to the Railway Society); erection of a cairn to mark the North

Star Wagon Road (Mc-Ginty Trail); moving, res-toration and furnishing of the old Marysville School and the self guided walk-ing tour book “Footsteps Through The Past”. We also provided artifacts, on loan, to furnish the Min-er’s House.

Currently we are working with the North Star Quilters Guild Soci-ety, providing research on their project involving the creation of small wall hangings of historic buildings and landmarks, which will be installed at the Conference Centre when completed. There have been many more projects completed in-volving cataloguing, con-servation and proper storage of our collection and no doubt many more to come.

All of our work would not have come about without the generous support, through dona-tion of artifacts, volunteer time and yes, money, from the wonderful peo-ple of Kimberley and for that, we thank you.

Lastly, a brief com-ment on Mr. Martin’s opinion piece in the Sept. 2, 2014 Bulletin. Many of our volunteers took of-fense to his “nearly-deads” description of some of his passengers, not to mention idea that the train ride is the only “jewel” in Kimberly’s crown. As Mr. Martin pointed out in his April 27, 2009 article, Kimber-ley possesses some pretty spectacular scenery and boundless recreational opportunities, year round, all of which are economic generators.

Perhaps Mr. Martin should take a day and play tourist to refresh his memory on what a great place we live in.

“They tell me that you’ll lose your mind when you grow older. What they don’t tell you is that you won’t miss it much.”

Malcolm Cowley

The time has come for me to come out of the closet and confess. It is my duty to alert my faithful — albeit

naïve — readers as to my true nature. My closest friends and my fam-ily have already found me out and I only hope that our shattered relationships can survive. I am not positive that I can, not after I an-nounce that I am a practic-ing …

Wild flower admirer. It’s true. That doesn’t mean that I mince about

with a limp wrist; I’ve merely taken an in-terest in wild flowers. I get excited in spring when I know that I’ll be able to see some wild buttercups on Eager Hill. They give me a thrill each year. When I come upon a hillside smothered in bright yellow balsam root, I feel excitement. When I emerge from a tangle of slide alder and discover a sunny bank strewn with Indian paint brush, like my friend Paul, I am like-ly to exclaim, “Wow!”

I know virtually nothing at all about the biology of flowers. I failed that class at school but I think I know petals, then, when I check, they turn out to be sepals.

This must have been a misprint in my Flowers of the Rockies book. Stamens are the male parts of flowers, I learned, and then it gets personal. I’d rather stand back and admire...

In my youth, apart from the huge bunches of bluebells I used to collect for Mum, I didn’t acknowledge flowers. If I did see them, I didn’t demean myself by

noticing them. Later, as I thrashed about in the mountains, trying to be a famous rock-gymnast, I began to take note of fossils and various formations of geology. That was all right for a guy.

When we first came to the East Kootenay, our male friends were all hunters, so we hunted; it seemed to be the natural thing to do: a male necessity. However, hunting is in the Fall and that’s when most of the wild flowers have given up the ghost for the year.

Spring and summer are different. On our way up to the rocks near Lumberton, we could not ignore the Calypso Slippers that peered at us beneath the trees and, way up in Boulder Creek, I can still recall discovering those waxy pyrolas, almost hidden under fallen trees.

But flowers are female things and they sneak up on a fellow, the way women do. Like Rita.

We were invited to her house one eve-

ning and she showed us her collection of colour slides. They were all of wild-flowers and the pictures grabbed me. Soon I was avidly making my own collection of pic-tures until I realized that it was difficult to do well and that I should have started years before. I was hooked though. Even being scorned by my neighbours as I tried to photograph the myriad dandelions in my lawn didn’t deter me.

Then Wendy rolled up from England. She was a wild flower enthusiast from Eu-rope and knew well all the blossoms of the Alps and Pyrenees. She recognized every flower we showed her and was ecstatic at the extravagant display nature put on as we traversed the ridge between the Bear Lakes. She knew different names for the flowers but then, neither of us knew the Latin names that biologists have given them.

My ancient face wrinkles into a grin when I recall friend Axel having a fit when we were up on Lakit Mountain. He sud-denly leaped to his feet and gambolled like a drunken puppet down the hillside warbling ‘The hills are alive with the sound of music’ and then fell flat on his face. According to George, I trotted down to Axel and helped him to his feet, mutter-ing, “Oh, look! You’ve crushed some eriogonum,” then tidied the damaged flowers.

This, of course, is completely untrue, but I still remember the glorious late sum-mer orange blossoms on the plants.

Flowers are for men as well

OpiniOn/EvEnts

In the last few weeks, a number of people have asked me how I understand the whole concept of salvation, of “being

saved.”Church folk like to throw that word

throw around a lot. “Have you been saved?” has become part of the jargon of the church. The trouble with jargon is that too often we stop asking what it means.

An online dictionary de-fines it this way: “salvation: noun (Christianity) the act of delivering from sin or sav-ing from evil; 2: a means of preserving from harm or unpleasantness.”

Most Christians in North America agree with that definition. Salvation has to do with what happens to us after we die. On the cross, Jesus died and saved us from our sins, giving us a ticket to heaven after we have died.

The trouble with that understanding is that it’s too reductionistic. It turns Christi-anity into what Marcus Borg calls a “reli-gion of requirements”. If we live the right way, if we believe, if we “accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour”, then we will get to go to eternal bliss.

In the Bible, however, salvation is a much larger and richer concept than that. Salvation is not about the afterlife. Salva-tion is something that happens in this world. The Greek word for salvation (the language of the New Testament) is the same word which is ordinarily used for “health” or “wholeness”. To be saved is to be healed, to be made whole. And that happens here, in this world, in this time, in this life.

Salvation isn’t just about getting the prize at the end of life. Salvation is a pro-

cess in which we are constantly being transformed in an ongoing encounter with God. It is a process of renewal and trans-formation. We take a journey with God, in which we are being made whole, in which we are being healed, in which we are being transformed.

The New Testament uses many different images for salvation. The Gospel of John tells us Jesus is the light of the world. In that sense, salvation is about light shin-ing in the darkness of our world, so that we can see re-

ality through the lens of God’s love.Another image used by John is to Jesus

as the bread of life or living water. Salvation is about satisfying our deepest hungers. Jesus fills us and nourishes us and quench-es our deepest thirsts in ways that consum-erism and materialism never can.

These images, and others, are meta-phors for salvation. As we receive God’s goodness, we are being made whole. We receive life in all its fullness.

The other problem for me with the lim-ited understanding of salvation is that it’s so individualistic. It’s about what happens to me after I die. But Biblical faith is never private. In the Bible, salvation is intensely social and communal. The Old Testament tells the story of the creation of a nation, a new people, a community. Israel’s mission is to live together as people of God in the world. In the nation, salvation is about life together. It is about peace and justice, not only within the community, but beyond it as well.

The prophet Isaiah talks about Israel being “given as a light to the nations, that God’s salvation may reach to the end of the

earth.” The prophet understood God’s pur-pose for the world to be one where all people lived together in justice and peace and hope. The purpose of life was for heal-ing and wholeness, not separation and brokenness.

In the same way, the New Testament continues this social thrust. Jesus’ main message in the gospels is the “kingdom of God”. By definition, the good news is about community.

Paul went about the ancient world, set-ting up communities where people could learn to live together in ways of justice and wholeness. He talked about the church as a body, a community, with many mem-bers.

Salvation is God at work in our lives. We need to respond to God’s work in order for wholeness to be made real in us. Archbish-op Desmond Tutu quoted Augustine in a lecture some years ago when he said, “God without us will not, as we without God cannot.” Without us, without our response, God will not heal our lives. We must partic-ipate in God’s project of reclaiming the world.

If Jesus is bread to feed our deepest hungers, then we must take and eat. If Jesus is light in the darkness, we must open our eyes and see. If Jesus leads us home, we must follow.

Salvation is the transformation of a per-son and a community in an ongoing en-counter with God. It is about being open to the healing power of God’s love for our-selves as individuals, and for ourselves in community.

The beginning of the book trialsPart 2 of 2

The Oklahoma Book Trials began in the fall of 1940, when police raided an independent bookstore and ar-

rested its owners, all in the name of nation-al security. The store’s owners (Bob and Ina Wood) and two of their friends (Eli Jaffe and Alan Shaw) were charged with ‘crimi-nal syndicalism’—an anti-quated state law making it illegal “to do acts of physi-cal violence to effect indus-trial and political change.” Simply put, the four defen-dants were accused of try-ing to overthrow the United States government—an ac-cusation made solely on the books they sold, owned, and read.

The state attorney’s case rested on the crates of books and pamphlets seized from the raids, which were stacked to the roof in the Oklahoma City Jail. The literature was communist in nature, and each of the ac-cused belonged to the Oklahoma Young Communist League. Even though there was no Red Scare sweeping the United States at the time, the state was confident they had an open and shut case. It didn’t hurt that many of the legal and civil rights of the defendants and their lawyer were trampled on at will.

Not only were each of the accused’s bail set unreasonably high, but they were also denied legal counsel, as the jail guards re-fused to let their attorney (George Croom) confer with them. The guards also reward-ed other prisoners with alcohol if they ha-rassed each defendant, which lead to Eli Jaffe being beat unconscious. Croom—a superb civil liberties attorney from Tulsa—

had no better luck outside the jail. Nothing he did could persuade the judge to let him examine the evidence against his clients.

The trial began the first week of Octo-ber, ironically occurring between National Newspaper Week and National Book Week. “The state’s evidence will show that Joseph Stalin has taken great interest in

this country,” began the state attorney, who then entered into evidence

‘The Communist Mani-festo,’ ‘State & Revolution,’ and Stalin’s ‘Foundations of Leninism.’ These books, he explained, “taught the use of violence…lauded

communism, the rule of the proletariat, the abolition of capitalism…and the cre-ation of a separate Negro government.”

Although the state had to concede the none of the accused had committed vio-lent acts, he would “merely read excerpts from these books and that in itself is viola-tion of the law.” The state then had the books they had seized from the accused (40 boxes) brought out, promising to read damning excerpts from each.

Every one of Croom’s objections were overruled, and he was left to simply beg for at the very least an inventory of the seized books. Request denied. The state attorney then spent the next 14 hours reading ex-cepts from 50 different books, all passages clearly dealing with “bloody revolution.” However, this very act by the prosecution finally gave Croom a little of what he des-perately needed: a list of book titles he could work with.

“Books, books, books,” Croom shook his head, addressing the jury the following

week. “When did it become a crime for an American citizen to own a book?” The state attorney “sets himself up as censor to tell 250,000 people of Oklahoma County what they can read and what they cannot read.” Under subpoena, the City Librarian concurred that not only did they have the majority of these titles at the library, but so did every other public and academic li-brary in the state.

A college student also testified for the defence, supplying a list of books he found at the University of Oklahoma’s Library, which included “eight by Karl Marx, six by Lenin, two by Engels, two by Stalin, and 250 on socialism and communism.”

Final arguments for the defence were heard on June 10th, where Croom remind-ed the jury that “never in the United States has there been any prosecution for the possession of books.”

He also pointed to the Thomas Jeffer-son quote which hung above the court-house door:

“Equal and exact justice to all men, of whatever state or persuasion, religious, or political.”

The jury barely deliberated before ren-dering their verdict. Bob and Ina Wood, Elia Jaffe and Alan Shaw were found guilty on all charges. Each was sentenced to 10 years in a penitentiary and fined 5,000 dol-lars.

And that was that—except for a small editorial in a Tulsa newspaper, which asked “Just what kind of insanity is this?” We will look at that answer next week.

Crowsnest conclusionKootenay Ice wrap up WHL pre-season with Thunder Challenge in Blairmore

Chris Pullen Photo/CranbrookPhoto.Com

Former Kootenay Ice forward Zach Franko eludes former Calgary Hitmen captain Jaynen Rissling during the 2014 WHL playoffs. The two teams will do battle once again this weekend as they meet in the Crowsnest Pass.

Taylor rocc aSports Editor

With eight players off at NHL camps, the Koo-tenay Ice will look to a younger squad during WHL exhibition play this weekend.

The Ice wrap up the 2014 WHL pre-season with the sixth annual Thunder Challenge in the Crowsnest Pass, be-ginning tonight at 7 p.m. when they meet the Le-thbridge Hurricanes in Blairmore, Alta.

After three consecu-tive losses in Kennewick, Wa. last weekend -- in-cluding an 8-2 thrashing at the hands of the Ever-ett Silvertips -- head coach Ryan McGill said he expected his squad to compete harder in indi-vidual battles through-out practice this week and in the final two games of the pre-season.

“Monday and Tues-day, practices were based around the com-pete and learning what it takes [to play in this league],” said assistant coach Jay Henderson Thursday night. “Obvi-ously they got a good

taste of that in exhibi-tion games [in Kenne-wick] but now they’ve got to learn and make it a consistent thing…They did a good job this week and they worked hard.”

While Tim Bozon, Sam Reinhart and Mackenzie Skapski have all been missing since the start of camp as they prepared for NHL audi-tions, five more mem-bers of the Ice departed this week as they chase big league dreams.

Forwards Jaedon De-scheneau, Jon Martin and Luke Philp, along with defencemen Tan-ner Faith and Rinat Va-liev jettisoned from Cranbrook to each of their respective NHL destinations Wednes-day evening.

Philp, Descheneau and Martin represent the team’s top three scorers through three pre-season games. Their absence leaves ample opportunity for the youngsters battling to make the club.

“As we move along in exhibition season, obvi-ously for the young kids it’s new and playing in

the Western League is different for them,” Hen-derson said. “They get to feel the process that first weekend.

“Going back to last year, our second week-end is much better -- higher tempo of course -- and they’ve had a lit-tle bit of time to learn our systems and that compete factor.”

Up front, 17-year-old Austin Wellsby has tal-lied one goal in two games, while 16-year-old Vince Loschiavo reg-istered one assist during one game on the team’s trip to Kennewick. After a strong showing through training camp and intrasquad play, for-mer 2013 first-round bantam selection Jared Legien has been held scoreless in three pre-season contests.

The curious name that has cruised under the radar is 16-year-old River Beattie. The native of Sherwood Park, Alta. has registered an even rating through three ex-hibition losses. Beattie was drafted by the Ice in the sixth round of the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.

Mark O’Shaughnessy, Cale Fleury and Bryan Allbee continue to slug away in search of em-ployment on the back-end. Fleury and Allbee both sit with a mi-nus-four rating, while O’Shaughnessy heads up the trio with a plus-1 mark to go with one as-sist.

“They’re still learn-ing,” Henderson said of the trio. “It’s about de-tails. All three of them bring something differ-ent to our team.

“But at the end of the day, everyone is still bat-tling it out right now. Just because you’re a veter-an, doesn’t mean you’re going to make the club.”

The veterans Hen-derson alludes to con-sist of Troy Murray, Jor-dan Steenbergen, Tan-ner Faith, Tyler King and Rinat Valiev.

The goaltending bat-tle behind Wyatt Hoflin continues as Keelan Williams and Jayden Sit-tler vie for the backup position.

“They’re both in tough,” Henderson said. “But they’ve shown well, so it’s going to be inter-

esting to see how it plays out.”

Williams allowed four goals to the Portland Winterhawks in his only appearance in Kenne-wick, while Sittler was cracked for eight tallies against the Silvertips.

According to Hen-derson, the expectation is that Sittler and Wil-liams will share the puck-stopping duties Friday against Leth-bridge while Wyatt Hof-lin will see 60 minutes of

crease time Sunday af-ternoon against the Cal-gary Hitmen.

After tonight’s dust-up with the Hurricanes, the Ice close out the Thunder Challenge Sunday at 2 p.m. when they meet the Calgary Hitmen in Blairmore.

The Ice have 22 play-ers in camp following the NHL departures of Descheneau, Martin, Philp, Faith and Valiev. Whether those five re-turn will impact when

and what roster deci-sions are made follow-ing the conclusion of the pre-season.

“We’re focused on the weekend at this point,” Henderson said. “Hopefully everyone shows well. We want those tough decisions, that’s what training camp is for.”

The Ice open the 2014-15 WHL regular season Friday, Sept. 19 in Red Deer.

KIJHL Season Preview: Part TwoA look into the Kootenay Conference

Taylor rocc aSports Editor

The 2014 KIJHL regu-lar season begins today with five games on the slate across the league.

The Beaver Valley Ni-tehawks return to de-fend their KIJHL and

Keystone Cup champi-onships in 2014-15, but that won’t be a task eas-ily achieved.

The Kamloops Storm took home the 2013-14 KIJHL and Okanagan/Shuswap Conference regular season titles with a record of 42-9-0-1,

good for 85 points. The Nelson Leafs were tops in the Kootenay Confer-ence, going 38-9-1-4 and collecting 81 points.

Today, we take a look at the KIJHL’s Kootenay Conference.

All rosters detailed here on in are current as of Sept. 11.

With many Junior A clubs across Western Canada still wrapping up training camps and pre-season, there will be an inevitable trick-le-down effect that could see many more players return to the KIJHL club they spent the 2013-14 season with.

So while accurate for now, these roster details stand to change in the coming weeks.

Eddie Mountain Division:

CRESTON VALLEYTHUNDER CATS2013-14: 39-11-1-1

(80 pts; 1st in division)Post-season: Lost in

third round to Beaver Valley (4-1)

Season opener: Sept. 13 at Kimberley

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats will be a very different team this season from the one that claimed the Eddie Mountain Division crown in 2013-14.

Gone are the team’s top three scorers from last season as forwards Jesse Collins, Brandon Formosa and Trevor Hanna all aged out.

“We’re going to be a different group playing a different style than last year’s team,” said Thun-der Cats new head coach/general manager Jeff Dubois. “We’ve lost a great deal of skill all over the ice.

“That being said, I’m very happy with how our camp and pre-sea-son has progressed. I’m pleased by the high standard that our veter-ans are setting for a very promising group of rookies. We have have enough skill to compete on a nightly basis but our overall success will be determined by how hard we’re willing to compete in a very tough division.”

Between the pipes, Brock Lefebvre returns to backstop Creston after posting a record of 18-4-1 with a 2.81 GAA and 0.910 SP in 2013-14.

KIMBERLEYDYNAMITERS2013-14: 29-21-2-0

(60 pts; 2nd in division)Post-season: Lost in

second round to Cres-ton Valley (4-3)

Season opener: Sept. 13 vs. Creston Valley

The Dynamiters stand poised to steal the Eddie Mountain Divi-sion crown from the Creston Valley Thunder Cats in 2014-15.

With a strong group of returning veterans in-cluding Jason Richter,

Jared Marchi and Tyson Klingspohn, the Nitros won’t be short on speed or skill in 2014-15.

While the aforemen-tioned returners are known across the KIJHL, the Dynamiters biggest weapon could lie within power forward and rela-tive unknown Keenan Haase. The Californian is about to embark on his first season of Canadian hockey. Standing 6-foot-2 and possessing a heavy shot, the big man is a le-thal combination of size and skill.

With returning net-minder Tyson Brouwer between the pipes, there is no reason this team can’t make a strong push for the division title.

The return of Coy Prevost and Jordan Roy from their respective WHL tryouts won’t hurt head coach Jerry Bancks either.

FERNIEGHOSTRIDERS2013-14: 24-22-0-6

(54 pts; third in division)Post-season: Lost in

first round to Kimberley (4-1)

Season opener: Sept. 13 at Columbia Valley

The Ghostriders wel-comed back a familiar face during the 2014 off-season after forward Derek Georgopolous was acquired from the Golden Rockets in ex-change for cash consid-erations.

Georgopolous last suited up for the Ghostriders in 2012-13, tallying 22 goals and 38 points in 50 games. The Cranbrook native spent the 2013-14 campaign in the West Kootenay with the Castlegar Rebels, registering 12 goals and 34 points in 43 games.

The team also made a change behind the bench as Craig Mohr re-places Dale Hladun as head coach/general manager.

Jeff Orser and Bran-don Butler will batten down the hatches be-tween the pipes for Fernie this season. The duo represent yet an-other new entity for the organization in 2014-15. Orser spent the 2013-14 campaign with the Al-berta Junior Hockey League’s Calgary Mus-tangs while Butler rounded out his midget days with the Calgary Buffaloes.

Dylan Robertson will sport the captaincy in his fourth full season with the Ghostriders. The 6-foot-3 forward has amassed 368 minutes in penalties along with 27 goals and 70 points through 136 games with the Ghostriders.

COLUMBIA VALLEYROCKIES

2013-14: 13-28-3-8 (37 pts; fourth in divi-sion)

Post-season: Lost in first round to Creston Valley (4-0)

Season opener: Sept. 13 vs. Fernie

With 2013-14 leading scorer Ryan Henderson aging out, the door is wide open for Doan Smith to take over the reigns of the offence in Invermere. The 19-year-old native of Cessford, Alta. posted 18 goals and 33 points in 45 games with the Rockies last season.

In the blue paint, Brody Nelson returns to stop pucks for the Rock-ies. The 18-year-old hometown product had a tough go in 2013-14, going 6-16-3 with a 4.25 GAA and 0.888 SP. At 6-foot-1, the big-bodied netminder will be the backbone of a Rockies squad that hopes to edge its way up the Eddie Mountain Division standings in 2014-15.

GOLDEN ROCKETS2013-14: 15-32-1-4

(35 pts; fifth in division)Post-season: Failed

to qualifySeason opener: Sept.

12 at Princeton

A couple of key cogs from the Rockets blue-line aged out following the 2013-14 season, in-cluding captain Michael Anderson.

To take over the lead-ership role left behind by Anderson, the Rock-ets turn to Daniel Dah-lin in 2014-15. The 20-year-old Anderson will wear the ‘C’ for Golden this season as he closes out a KIJHL career that has seen him dress for 116 games in his hometown colours. The 6-foot-4 native of Golden has amassed 21 points over his three seasons in the KIJHL.

Forward Ian Desrosi-er will look to improve upon his offensive totals in 2014-15. Another local kid, Desrosier en-ters his third full season with the Rockets after putting up 14 goals and 28 points in 49 games last season.

In addition to Dahlin, the Rockets could get a solid year out of rookie blueliner Alex Asta-siewicz. The Salmon Arm native will be 15 when puck drops on

opening night, turning 16 Oct. 1. As exciting as it could be to add a young-ster of Astasiewicz’s cali-bre, the 6-foot defence-man might not be around for an extended KIJHL career after the Everett Silvertips select-ed him in the third round of the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.

Neil Murdoch Division:

NELSON LEAFS2013-14: 38-9-1-4 (81

pts; first in division)Post-season: Lost in

second round to Beaver Valley

Season opener: Sept. 12 vs. Beaver Valley (4-2)

After the off-season the Nelson Leafs had, who knows what to ex-pect?

Upon taking the Neil Murdoch Division crown in 2013-14, head coach/general manager Frank Maida left the Leafs to focus on other commitments. He was quickly replaced by Matt Hughes.

Almost as quickly as Hughes was hired, he blew away in the wind, resigning from his post in late July before ever stepping behind the bench.

Enter David McLel-lan.

A native of Surrey, B.C., McLellan came with a long resume that features four seasons as head coach of the BCHL’s Burnaby Ex-press. With some coach-ing stability in place, the focus now shifts to hockey.

The team will need to learn what life is like without high-flying of-fensive weapons Jamie Vlanich and Travis Well-man, who both aged out following the 2013-14 season. The duo com-bined for 85 goals and 184 points last season. Vlanich claimed the KIJHL scoring title with 97 points while Well-man was the only 50-goal scorer in the league last season.

BEAVER VALLEYNITEHAWKS2013-14: 38-10-1-3

(80 pts; second in divi-sion)

Post-season: KIJHL champions

Season opener: Sept. 12 at Nelson

The top two teams in the Neil Murdoch Divi-sion will go head-to-head to start the season and the Nitehawks don’t project to be any easier of a squad come 2014-15.

Though last season’s leading scorer Ryan Ed-wards (31 goals, 84 points) aged out, the team bolstered its for-ward ranks with the ac-quisition of Braydon Horcoff from the Camp-bell River Storm of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League. The 20-year-old Prince Ru-pert native posted five goals and 27 points in 27 games with the Storm in 2013-14. He is familiar with the KIJHL as well, having made a run to the Cyclone Taylor Cup with the Castlegar Reb-els in 2012-13.

On the blueline, the Nitehawks lost veteran Archie McKinnon who also aged out following the 2013-14 season. But fear not, head coach/general manager Terry Jones found a replace-ment in Andrew Miller. The Trail native spent 2013-14 with the Kim-berley Dynamiters After expressing an interest in

playing his 20-year-old season closer to home, the Nitros and Nite-hawks struck a deal to send the veteran de-fenceman west.

In net, Keystone Cup MVP Brett Clark looks to have graduated to the BCHL’s Trail Smoke Eat-ers. Carson Schamer-horn was a 17-year-old affiliate player for the squad last season and looks to fill the void. He dressed in two games during the team’s pur-suit of the Keystone Cup, registering a 0.50 GAA and 0.985 SP.

CASTLEGAR REBELS2013-14: 22-25-2-3

(49 its; third in division)Post-season: Lost in

first round to Beaver Valley (4-0)

Season opener: Sept. 13 at Nelson

Leading scorer Con-nor Beauchemin aged out after producing 30 goals and 56 points for the Rebels in 2013-14. The team also lost steady defenceman Hunter Jenerou who turned 21 in June.

Austin Wells projects to start the season as the

team’s new number one goaltender. The 19-year-old native of Calgary ap-peared in 29 games for the Fernie Ghostriders in 2013-14, going 13-13-0 with a 3.31 GAA and 0.895 SP.

The Rebels project to be a young team in 2014-15. With a power-ful Nitehawks squad re-turning to the Neil Mur-doch Division, it might be tough slugging to get up and out of the mid-

dle of the pack. SPOKANE BRAVES2013-14: 22-26-0-4

(48 pts; fourth in divi-sion)

Post-season: Lost in first round to Nelson (4-2)

Season opener: Sept. 13 at Grand Forks

The KIJHL’s only American team lost leading scorer Justin Bonanno (28 goals, 55 points) and defenceman Alex Peltram to age.

Apart from that, last year’s team remains eli-gible to return.

A veteran-laden Braves could make a push to escape the first round of the post-sea-son for the first time

since 2009-10 when Spokane lost to the Nel-son Leafs in round two.

GRAND FORKSBORDER BRUINS2013-14: 16-32-2-2

(36 pts; fifth in division)Post-season: Failed

to qualifySeason opener: Sept.

12 vs. 100 Mile House

After finishing the 2013-14 campaign in the basement of the Neil Murdoch Division, there truly is nowhere to go but up for the Border Bruins.

Forward Michael Rand tallied 19 goals and 41 points for Grand Forks in 2013-14. He re-turns this season along with Tucker Brown (28 points).

The Border Bruins will roll with two KIJHL rookies in net to start the season. Kiernan Matsuba, an 18-year-old from Spruce Grove, Alta. joins Jacob Mullen of Coeur D’Alene between the pipes.

Mullen represents a hulking presence at 6-foot-4 and could stand to stop a lot of pucks in 2014-15.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Your possessive side might emerge when dealing with someone you respect. Being selfish in that way is likely to reveal your innate insecurities. Be more upbeat and deliberate. You could overthink a situation to the point of upset. Tonight: TGIF! Make it your treat. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You could be more forthright than usual. Being so direct will energize you and encourage you to take a risk with a diffi-cult person. You will want to have a long-overdue conversa-tion. Know that you might feel uncomfortable with what you hear. Tonight: A star, wherever you are. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Much will be going on behind the scenes. You are anchored and secure at the present mo-ment, and you’re likely to be very optimistic. Others will re-spond to you in a positive way. You could be taken aback by someone’s offer. Tonight: Not to

be found. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Emphasize what is important to you. Know what needs to hap-pen, and decide who you want around you. Stop and buy a to-ken of affection for a loved one. Do not push beyond your nor-mal limits in order to get what you want. Tonight: Be where the crowds are. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Take your time when making a decision. It might be more im-portant than you realize. Getting past an older person’s demands could be almost impossible. You might wonder when to pull back so you can go off and do your thing. Tonight: Out and about. (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) HHHHH Keep reaching out to someone at a distance. You might want to make last-min-ute weekend plans. This person often plays devil’s advocate for you. You might be tempted to take off for an adventure. Weigh the cost of proceeding as you have been. Tonight: Out late. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You might want to work

through a problem quickly with a friend or loved one; otherwise, a lot of negativity could come into your life. A family member could demonstrate how resilient he or she can be when adjusting to a big change. Tonight: Make it personal. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Defer to others, and understand what is happening with a key individual in your life. By ex-pressing your confidence in this person’s decisions, you will open up the lines of communication between you. Don’t overthink a decision too much. Tonight: Follow the leader. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You will want to free up some extra time just for you. You’ll re-main levelheaded, even though you have a very difficult decision to make. You might want to discuss your choice with several other people for feedback. To-night: Get physical -- go to the gym, or go dancing. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) No one dares question your ideas or your appeal. You know where you are heading. You

have a sense of direction that is unique, and you possess a special type of creativity. News from a distance is likely to put a smile on your face. Tonight: Ever playful. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Get down to the basics, and understand that you will need to rebuild certain areas of your life. An older friend or relative could be unintentionally demanding and not realize what you are going through. Ask for consid-eration and space, if need be. Tonight: Invite friends over. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Listen to news before changing plans. You could be more in lim-bo than you might have thought possible. Perhaps you need to work through an issue and re-turn someone’s call. Choose to make plans that allow you to share some of your dilemma. Tonight: Love the moment. BORN TODAY Actor Maurice Chevalier (1888), Olympic athlete Jesse Owens (1913), publisher Alfred A. Knopf Sr. (1892) ***

Dear Annie: I am a 21-year-old college student. I have found someone I am really close to and would love to have a relation-ship with. The problem is, she is already in a relationship with someone else. We worked together for two years and be-came best friends. Unfortunately, she left the job to focus on school. We still talk, and I always ask myself whether I should tell her how I truly feel and risk tarnishing the friendship. Should I just be happy the way things are? -- Trouble in the Ville Dear Trouble: It is bad form to go after someone who is already attached. So our recommendation is to leave things alone and enjoy the friendship. However, should she break up with her boyfriend, that would be an OK time to express your feelings. You already understand that she may not feel the same way and the friendship could suffer as a result, but if you are both unattached, you may as well give it a try. You never know. Dear Annie: I am a senior citizen, and I have a problem with being touched. Why do people think they can greet me with a hug? Smokers ask whether you mind if they smoke, so why can’t huggers ask before hug-ging? I don’t mean to sound rude, but what can I do about this? -- Touchy Senior Citizen Dear Touchy: A great many people do not like to be hugged, especially by vague ac-quaintances. When you see someone ap-proaching with arms out, it’s perfectly OK to take a step back, put your hand out and say politely, “Sorry. I’m not a hugger. But it’s nice to see you.” As people get to know you, they will respect your preference automati-cally. Please be patient. Dear Annie: I am writing in regard to the letter from “California Grandma.” Grand-ma was displeased with the conduct of her 13-year-old granddaughter, who just gradu-ated middle school and didn’t invite her to the graduation. Grandma wanted to know whether she could revoke an offer she made to pay the girl $5,000 if she graduated high school with all B’s or better. Your response, which began with, “It’s your money. You can do whatever you like with it,” may be legally incorrect. Grandma made an offer, and if the granddaughter ac-cepted the offer, a valid contract was created at that moment, and Grandma can no longer revoke it. If granddaughter performs, Grand-ma is obligated to pay her. If she doesn’t pay up, the granddaughter can sue for breach of contract. The fact that it may have been an oral contract is not the issue. In this type of scenario, oral contracts are binding. Nor is the fact that this is a minor child an issue. Minors may enter into contracts, and the right of revocation rests with the minor, not the adult. Normally with these types of contracts, it would be Grandma’s word against the granddaughter’s. But Grandma just admit-ted making the offer in the newspaper, so the contract exists. The moral of the story is, be careful what you promise the kids. It can have binding le-gal ramifications. It’s a good thing Grandma didn’t promise her a car. -- Florida Lawyer Dear Florida: What a world. Fortunate-ly for Grandma, letters in our column are anonymous, and there are dozens, if not thousands, of grandparents who make such promises to their grandchildren. So it’s still Grandma’s word against the granddaugh-ter’s that this letter came from her. None-theless, we don’t believe Grandma should rescind the offer. It was for grades, not be-havior, and she should keep her word. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Gertrude Josephine Moulton “Gertie”

1930 - 2014It is with great sorrow that the family of Gertrude Moulton announces her passing on Friday, September 5, 2014 at the F. W. Green Home in Cranbrook at 84 years of age.

Gertie was born on January 3, 1930 in St. Boswells,

Saskatchewan. After many years of farming, Ivan and Gertie moved to Cranbrook, BC in 1968 and bought the Hi-a-watha Motel. Gertie worked endless hours cooking plenty of delicious home cooked meals and baked hundreds of pies over the years. She was a dedicated member of the Ladies Auxiliary in the Fraternal Order of Eagles, serving 2 terms as their Madam President. Gertie and Ivan spent many weekends camping with “Eagles on Wheels” and cooking for functions in the Hall. In her later years, she enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles. In 2008 Gertie moved to the F.W. Green Home and resided there until her passing.

Special thanks to the staff at the F. W. Green Memorial Home for their care throughout our mom’s stay.

Gertie is survived by her children: Myrna, Tim (Marilyn), Lorri-Anne (Grant), Kelly (Doreen), and daughter-in-law Debbie; her grandchildren: Aaron (Kim), Kim (Mike), Tyrell (Jenny), Amanda, Corly and TJ; great grandchildren: Clayton, Emily, Ashton, Avery and Taylor and her brother Reg (Patty) Baber. She was predeceased by her husband Ivan Moulton, son Barrie Moulton, parents Fred and Minnie Baber and her sister Lorraine Usherwood.

A Celebration Of Gertie’s Life will be held upstairs in the Eagles Nest at the Cranbrook Eagles Hall on Friday, September 12, 2014 from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial donation in her honour may do so to the: The Kidney Foundation of Canada, 200, 4940 - Canada Way, Burnaby, British Columbia, V5G 4K6 or the: Canadian Diabetes Association, PO Box 12013, Stn BRM B, Toronto, Ontario, M7Y 2L3.

Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at:

ON THE WEB:

Elsie Hammond (nee Biensch), 94, of Kimberley/Cranbrook BC passed away Saturday Sept. 6. Elsie was born in Unity Sk. on January 15, 1920, the second of 8 kids to parents Gottlieb and Gretchen. Her early years on the mixed farm, homesteaded by her folks near Artland Sk., were busy ones with a big family and the farm – lots of work, laughter, tears, chores, community, music, dance, sports, and some pretty hard times during the depression of the 1930s. She used to laugh mischievously when telling about the tomato patch in the huge garden and her salt shaker hidden nearby! – she loved gardening. As a graduate RN in the early 1940s, her adventurous spirit took her off nursing to Salmon Arm, Revelstoke, Duncan, Yellowknife, and Wetaskiwin. While in the far north, she met her future husband Bob, a young mining engineer/prospector/adventurer who whooshed her off her feet and they were married in Wetaskiwin on Sept. 26, 1946 (67 years ago). Settling in Kimberley BC, they had 2 kids – Rick in 1947 and Sally in 1948. Shortly after, the Hammonds moved north to a remote mine about 90 km NE of Juneau, Alaska at Tulsequah BC. Five years later, the family returned to Kimberley for many happy and fun years filled with outdoor activities especially skiing, camping, and again Elsie and her green thumb tackled building and planting the garden and yard. The family always knew spring had arrived when the odorifus aroma of manure wafted through the air – a new load on the garden and the winters compost turned! In the late 1960s, as empty nesters, Elsie and Bob spent over 20 years in the West Kootenays of BC between Riondel and Tadanac (Trail) where they spent many active retirement years, camping, hiking, and gardening in the summers and both alpine and x-country skiing in the mild winters. Through the years, Elsie utilized her nursing skills to train Candy Stripers in hospitals and volunteered at the Red Cross Blood Donor Clinics, Well Womens Clinic, and Girl Guide camps. She taught Adult Education Cooking classes and hundreds of people learned how to make tasty hearty soups and her famous homemade bread – the class called “How to make 150% whole grain bread”. An appreciation of Nature and its cycles was an integrated part of her very being and she always tried to interest and educate others to feel the same wonder and amazement. When out walking, she was rarely without binoculars, magnifying glass, and a bag to pick up garbage, the bird and flower books not far off. In her neighbourhoods, the kids knew her as “the Bird Lady” who would help identify the live ones and examine the lifeless they brought to her. We all learned to observe the amazing views and details of nature, the trees, mountains, plants, birds, animals, insects, and the clouds. Elsie and Bob moved back to Kimberley in 1990 where Rick, wife Daphne, and their sons Dana (10) and Benson (1) relocated soon after. Daughter Sal was fairly close by in the Slocan Valley during the summers. Elsie’s two grandsons were now one of her main focuses. She spent many many happy hours traipsing through the woods sharing her love, passion, and knowledge of nature with them.Elsies wonderful lifelong outlook of -- ‘make the best of it’ went hand in hand with one of her favorite sayings --“I was born under a lucky star”. This held true even during the past few years with dementia, always maintaining her cheerful, playful, and curious nature. Her surviving immediate family – husband Bob in Cranbrook, son Rick & wife Daphne in Kimberley, grandsons Dana in Whitehorse and Benson in Calgary, daughter Sally & husband Randy in Slocan Valley, granddaughter Karen & great grandson Dylan in Ottawa, brother Roy and wife Joan in Calgary, brother Bob and wife Marg in Artland, brother Harold in White Rock.Should you wish, a donation to the Kootenay Naturalists at www. bcnature.ca website would be welcomed. Please include on it “in memory of Elsie Hammond” and they will forward it directly to the Kootenay Naturalists.

ObituaryElsie Anna Hammond

It just seems like yesterday that I whispered in your ear,

“So long for now sweetheart we will meet again soon”

As I remember those words today I also remember the

one person I have loved for an eternity, and that is you my

darling. They say as time goes by the hurt of missing you gets

easier. I don’t ever want the hurt to get easier because along with the

hurt comes the wonderful memories of the life we shared together. Those memories of playing

and laughing with our grandchildren, playing and laughing together, these memories will stay with me forever.

Thank you my darling for the wonderful memories you have left behind for me. I will always love you

Canadianscontinue to turn to DAILY NEWSPAPERS for breaking news, analysis of the day’s top events and entertaining content, according to the latest NADbank data. “Increased media compe-tition, besides raising the editorial bar at dailies, doesn’t change one crucial fact”, says media buyer Bruce Claassen, CEO of Genesis-Vizeum (Toronto) and chair of Aegis Media Canada. “Daily newspapers offer the same benefi ts they always have: the ability to reach customers quickly. Only with a daily paper are you able to choose to do an ad and run with it in two days, and reach a sizable portion of the population, in a fairly mass, fairly broad and fairly fast way. That’s a set of qualities very few other media can match.”

Picture the fearsome movie creatures of “Ju-rassic Park’’ crossed with the shark from “Jaws.’’ Then super-size to the biggest predator

ever to roam Earth. Now add a crocodile snout as big as a person and feet like a duck’s.

The result gives one some idea of a bizarre dinosaur scientists have just unveiled.

Spinosaurus is thought to be the largest known carnivore and would have feasted on huge fish and sharks

AssociAted PressCAPE CANAVERAL,

Fla. — NASA’s Curiosity rover is about to con-duct some serious sci-entific drilling at Mars.

The space agency announced Thursday that the rover has reached the base of Mount Sharp, its desti-nation since landing two years ago. Officials say drilling could begin as early as next week at an outcrop of rocks called Pahrump Hills.

Mount Sharp, locat-

ed in ancient Gale Cra-ter, rises nearly 3 1/2 miles (6 kilometres).

A scientific review panel has criticized the Curiosity team for an ex-tended mission that in-volves too much driving and too little sampling. On Thursday, project scientist John Grotzing-er of the California Insti-tute of Technology promised `we are going to do a lot more drilling’’ now that the six-wheel Curiosity is at Mount Sharp.

AssociAted PressATHENS — Archae-

ologists slowly digging through a huge 2,300-year-old tomb in northern Greece have uncovered two life-sized marble female statues flanking the entrance to one of three under-ground chambers.

A Culture Ministry statement says the stat-ues show ``exceptional artistic quality.’’ Their upper sections were dis-covered last week, but their bodies — in semi-transparent robes — emerged after part of a blocking wall was re-

moved Thursday.The excavation, on a

hillock near ancient Am-phipolis, 600 kilometres (370 miles) north of Ath-ens, has gripped Greece for a month, since Prime Minister Antonis Sama-ras visited it and pre-empted archaeolo-gists by releasing details on the findings.

A media frenzy en-sued amid speculation that the tomb may con-tain buried riches and the remains of an emi-nent figure.

Less than half the tomb has been explored so far.

Archaeologists unveil female statues in huge ancient tomb in Greece

A giant fossil, un-earthed in the Sahara desert, has given scien-tists an unprecedented look at the larg-est-known carnivorous dinosaur: Spinosaurus.

The 95-million-year-old remains confirm a long-held theory: that this is the first-known swimming dinosaur.

Scientists say the beast had flat, pad-dle-like feet and nostrils on top of its crocodilian head that would allow it to submerge with ease.

Lead discoverer Nizar Ibrahim of the

University of Chicago said it’s so weird that studying it was like working on an extrater-restrial.

The 50-foot (15 me-tre)-long predator is the only known dinosaur to live much of its life in the water.

Scientists had some bones from the beast al-ready, but the new skel-eton discovery forced a major rethinking of what it looked like some 95 million years ago.

The result was de-scribed Thursday in the journal Science.

Archaeologists excavating a massive burial mound in northern Greece have uncovered this female figurine, one of a pair sculpted from marble.

Canadian PressTORONTO — Mayor Rob Ford,

whom doctors said has an abdomi-nal tumour, was transferred to a downtown hospital Thursday for further tests as the nomination deadline for next month’s munici-pal election loomed.

His brother said the mayor was managing.

``He’s doing all right,’’ Coun. Doug Ford said outside the hospi-tal. ``He’s keeping in good spirits.’’

Ford’s wife Renata also visited him Thursday but left without say-ing anything to reporters kept on the hospital perimeter.

Ford, 45, possibly the best known mayor in North America due to a series of drug and other scandals, was admitted to the west-end Hum-ber River Hospital on Wednesday after complaining for months about abdominal pain that finally became ``unbearable.’’

At a news confere ce late Wednesday, a doctor said a scan had turned up a ``not small’’ tu-mour that required a biopsy to de-termine whether it was malignant.

``It’s devastating,’’ Doug Ford said. ``Devastating all night.’’

Early Thursday afternoon, the mayor was transferred to the down-

town Mount Sinai hospital for ``fol-low-up investigation and subse-quent treatment,’’ according to a Humber River statement.

Ford has until 2 p.m. eastern Friday to withdraw his name from the ballot should he decide to do so, while any new candidates have the same deadline to file their papers.

His brother said it was still too early to discuss the issue.

``Guys, I need a day or so, hon-estly I do,’’ Doug Ford said.

Ford’s father, Doug Ford Sr., died of colon cancer in 2006 — just months after it was diagnosed.

Ford himself had abdominal

surgery in 2009 to remove a tumour on his appendix.

``That’s pretty scary when that happens,’’ he told CTV in an inter-view in September 2010.

While the nature of the current tumour remained unclear, a gastro-enterologist from Australia’s leading cancer centre said doctors were likely considering the possibility of colorectal cancer.

The tumour diagnosis came just over two months after Ford re-turned to office from a stint in rehab that followed a scandal-plagued year in which council stripped him of most of his powers after he was

forced to admit to using crack co-caine in a ``drunken stupor’’ and was caught on video and audio re-cordings in profanity-laced rants.

Ford’s litany of woes, gaffes and outrageous conduct, made him an international celebrity and news of the tumour discovery was reported by media around the world, includ-ing CNN and the BBC.

Latest polls suggested he was still a viable candidate for re-elec-tion.

His hospitalization sparked an outpouring of sympathy — even from those who want him gone from the city’s government.
