Debate hits on civility, JumboPart Two

One of the questions that came up at the Chamber-hosted All Can-didates Forum in Kimberley this week came up at another forum as well. It is the question of civility and negative politics.

Candidates were asked what they intended to do to make politics cleaner and more respectful.

Norm Macdonald (NDP) said it was important to have intelligent debate on complex issues, and very

important to present accurate infor-mation.

“We have to have debates that are hard on issues but make sure they don’t slip into personal attacks,” he said. “It’s an important decision to make.”

He added that the decision to stay positive had to be made or B.C. would slip into the American exam-ple where 96 per cent of ad money in the last election cycle went to negative ads.

“Civility comes from under-standing each other,” said BC Liber-al Doug Clovechok. “It’s about sit-ting down and talking to each other.”

He said as MLA he would start the discussion in his own riding, bringing together people from Rev-elstoke, Golden, Invermere and Kimberley in regular sit-down meet-ings.

“We need to bring groups togeth-er. That’s where civility starts,” he said.

“This is the second time this has come up,” said the Conservative Party’s Earl Olsen. “I am privileged to be a part of this group and I don’t think attack ads are right. What good is electing someone who can only attack.

The Tiptoe Through the Tulips event at Cominco Gardens, planned as part of the First Satur-day celebrations tomorrow has been cancelled.

The reason is simple — it’s been so cold that the tulips aren’t blooming yet.

Cominco Gardens has spec-tacular tulip beds and it was hoped to showcase them this weekend, while Selkirk students fundraised with a lemonade and cookie stand.

However, cold spring weather has delayed everything and the event will be pushed back until the

flowers are in full bloom. It shouldn’t be too long if it warms up this week-end as promised. Stay tuned.

All other First Saturday events are still on as advertised.

Retired CP Rail employee Peter Twarowski and his son Lloyd stand beside the old ALCO engine, first in Fernie in 1954, then in Cranbrook in 2008. This old train now sits at the top of Baker Street in Cranbrook beside the Elko train station. Kimberley students will be singing in the Platzl on Mon-day morning at 11 a.m. In fact students will be singing across British Columbia and across Canada.

They’ll even be singing from the International Space Station. Astronaut Chris Had-field has penned this year’s Music Monday song, in part-nership with Barenaked La-

dies frontman Ed Robertson. Kimberley students, and

students across Canada, have been learning the song, “ISS – Is Somebody Singing“ and are ready to perform on Mon-day.

Commander Hadfield will perform along with them from the Space Station.

Music Monday is in its sixth year now and is simply a celebration of music in schools, and a reminder of the importance of music as

part of education. Kimberley’s students have

been blessed in recent years with solid music instruction, and a music program that is flourishing at all levels from elementary to secondary.

And all those levels will be in the Platzl Monday singing.

Marysville Elementary, Lindsay Park Elementary, McKim Middle School and Selkirk Secondary students will be performing a concert, hoping to make a connection

with the community, and fill the skies with music, as the Music Monday motto states.

Along with the singing per-formance there will be re-corder accompaniment by Lindsay Park, a mini band performance by Marysville Elementary (performing a song they worked on compos-ing themselves), two choir performances and a band performance by McKim/Sel-kirk.

port changing signage at Wasa that directed Cranbrook traffic through Wasa and Fort Steele.

“I can’t imagine anyone here would say no to that one,” Macdonald said, going on to say that with tourism in general the BC Liberals had taken away something that worked very well — Tourism BC — and that was a mistake.

Clovechok said the sign was an RDEK issue and he’d support their decision on it. He also said that Destination BC — which replaced Tourism BC — was the best thing that had hap-pened to tourism in this province in a long time.

Olsen got the laugh of the night when he said he’d turn the sign on his way home to Fairmont. He said that much more could be done on mar-keting this special region of the province.

Candidates also debated land use planning, education and the lack of employment services in Kimberley before fielding a question on Jumbo.

Olsen and Clovechok found common ground on the issue.

“When we as government set rules and poli-cies and someone comes with a plan and jumps through all the hoops — if the government has a process in place and a developer meets all the criteria, then it’s done. Jumbo did meet this cri-teria.

“I don’t quite understand this Resort Munic-ipality and I don’t believe public money should go into it. Let the developer build it.”

Macdonald says there has been no public support for Jumbo.

“In Golden, when Kicking Horse was devel-oped there was a referendum and 93 per cent were for it. There has been no public support for Jumbo.

“Secondly, there is no money. It’s a $700 mil-lion process with no $700 million. The only money in it so far is government money. There’s a fake mayor and a fake council. It’s ridiculous.”

Clovechok countered saying that you don’t have to have a referendum for land use issues.

“After 20 years, it’s process. There was a pro-cess and it was decided upon. When Norm says everyone disagrees, that’s not true. The Mayor of Radium says her community supports it.”

He also said an Invermere Councillor has come out in support of it.

An audience member quickly pointed out it was only one Councillor.

The evening concluded with each candidate making one more plea for votes.

“The key issue I’m hearing is the economy,” Clovechok said. “We are in good economic shape adn we have an economic plan that has nothing to do with tax, tax, tax, spend, spend, spend.”

“People want a change,” Macdonald said. “If you look back at the past four years there is no way we can accept that as a standard for B.C. We spent the past four years struggling with the HST coming in and then going out. I ask for your support as we look forward to May 14 and the change that’s coming.”

“The best indication of what someone will do is what they’ve done,” Olsen said. “Both the NDP and the Liberals raised the deficit. The BC Con-servative Party has the best solutions for what is facing us. Don’t spend money we don’t have. Take the opportunity for change on May 14.”

Cranbrook and Kimberley food banks are preparing for a food drive on May 6. Next week is Hunger Awareness Week in Canada, and so the food banks are hoping to promote solutions to the problem of hun-ger.

According to the food banks, there are some 900,000 individ-uals who turn to food banks for support each month in Canada. It also said that of those individuals, 38 per cent are children and youth.

Food Banks Canada is asking people to “give it up for hunger”, which challenges Ca-nadians to give up lunches or a food sta-ple for the week.

Jackie Jensen from the Cranbrook Food Bank said this is a way for everyone to con-tribute and feel con-nected to the cause of

hunger.“We encourage ev-

eryone – students, par-ents, families and the business community to join us May 6-10,” Jensen said.

The food banks are working together with Investors Group vol-unteers and local re-tailers to start the week off with food drives at Save On Foods, Safe-way and Superstore in Cranbrook, and Over-waitea Foods and Mark Creek Market in Kimberley.

The East Kootenay Traffic Services was issuing warnings for vehicles not abiding by the 2009 law that limits speeds when passing emer-gency or official vehicles, such as tow trucks that have flashing lights.

East Kootenay Traf-fic Services were out in full force Wednesday morning as part of a campaign to educate the public on a traffic law that deals with passing service and emergency vehicles.

The law, which came into effect back in 2009, limits the speed that vehicles on both sides of the road can drive past vehicles with flashing blue, red

or amber lights. Cpl. Tom Brannigan

was overseeing the op-eration that morning and said the law has made it much safer for police and others roadside service work-ers. The problem, he said, is that many peo-ple still don’t know about the law and so continue on at the posted limit.

“It’s been three, al-most four years and people are still having problems with it,” said

Brannigan. “What we’re learning from pulling people over and talking to them is they don’t know the law exists.”

The fine for not obeying the limits, which are 70km/h for any road with a post-ed limit of 80km/h and over, and 40km/h for any road with a limit below 80km/h, is $173.

“We’re going to be doing a number of these campaigns throughout the year they will involve ei-

ther tow trucks or po-lice vehicles,” he said. “Before that law came into place we were re-ally at risk. There was no law mandating that people slow down for us and it was quite common for people to go by us in excess of 100 km/h. We would then have to go and chase them down and write them a ticket for driving without undo care and attention or driving without rea-sonable care for oth-ers.”

He said that now

the law is pretty clear cut. It is covered under section 47.02 in the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations.

“It requires all ve-hicles to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles,” he said. “That means any red lights, like a firetruck, red and blue like a police truck, amber lights like a tow truck or B.C. Hydro, Telus, Shaw Cable. If they are working on the side of the road, it’s just a common courtesy that you would slow down and recognize that the amber light means caution.”

As it’s a warning campaign, police were only be issuing warn-ings for that particular infraction, unless ve-hicles were travelling in excess of 100 km/h.

He noted that the law also requires that both sides of the high-way slow down.

Hopes that two more units may short-ly be added to Pioneer Lodge were expected Tuesday when Ald. Mrs. Burrin, council’s representative on the Lodge committee, re-ported on a recent meeting.

There is the sum of $1600 in the building fund at present, Ald. Burrin said, and a start might soon be possi-ble.

She also made a bid to secure the old po-lice station as a nurs-ing home for senior citizens who are no longer able to care for themselves but coun-cil did not favour this proposal.

The alderman also reported a move to-wards a district senior citizens’ home, proba-bly located at Cran-brook, and declared she was “dead against it.”

“Our older folk don’t want to go to a strange place to end their days.” She said.

On May 12, 58 ex-cited High School stu-dents, accompanied by Mrs. J. Lukas and mr. R. Yarwood, will leave in two Star Stage buses for the Coast.

They are members of the Rotary High School Band, which is one of eight High School bands taking part in a Provincial Band Conference to be held in New West-minster in conjunc-tion with that city’s annual May Day cele-brations. Other bands attending will be from Kelowna, Summer-land, Oliver, Powell River, Victoria, Trail and New Westminster.

The Kimberley stu-dents will play five times in mass bands for adjudication and will also take part in a

public concert to be held in New Westmin-ster on Saturday, May 15. While away they will be billeted by the New Westminster Lions Club, but the trip is being financed by the students them-selves.

This is the first band conference to be held in Western Cana-da, and it is hoped that it will become an an-nual event.

The Rotary High School Band was formed in 1948 as a joint project of the Ro-tary Club and the Kimberley School Board, both of whom spent considerable money for instru-ments, uniforms and music.

Under the leader-ship of Ralph Yar-wood, Music instruc-tor at the Kimberley High School, they have made tremen-dous progress and are in great demand at programmes in the Auditorium and also at various public gath-erings both in Kimber-ley and neighboring centres.

Official opening of the city’s two new ele-mentary schools has been set for Friday evening.

School trustees will be present and have invited members of the city council, par-ents of children in the two schools and oth-ers interested to be present at the ceremo-ny at which the schools will be offi-cially named. Schools Inspector Ivan Jeffrey will officiate at the ceremony.

The school at Chapman Camp will be designated as the Chapman Camp School while the one at Townsite will be called the Lindsay Park School.

the annual Glitz and Glamour brunch and jewelry sale

You are in for a treat at this year’s Glitz and Glamour brunch, an annual fundraiser held by the Cranbrook Gogo Grannies.

There is a huge se-lection of beautiful watches, high end silver and gold jewel-ry, purses and scarves on offer at the silent auction. There is Canadian art, with Inukshuk earrings and West Coast Haida silver. Collector plates will also be available to buy at the event.

All of the items are gently used do-nations, but you wouldn’t know any of it has a previous owner.

Glitz and Glamour is the biggest fund-

raiser for the Gogo Grannies, which formed in 2007 and meets once a month at the College of the Rockies.

Since 2007, the Cranbrook group has raised $65,000 for the Stephen Lewis Foun-dation. The founda-

tion directs its funds to community-level organizations in 15 African countries to supp or t grand-mothers caring for their grandchildren due to the impact of HIV/AIDS.

Cranbrook teachers gathered outside the Heritage Inn on Tues-day evening to catch the attention of Pre-mier Christy Clark as she arrived their for a campaign rally.

“The election is looming. We need Premier Christy Clark

and the BC Liberals to pay attention to our message. We need to stop being attacked for public education. We need to stand up for teachers and stu-dents and families,” said Shelley Balfour, president of the Cran-brook District Teach-ers’ Association.

Local teachers stood outside the hotel with signs de-crying the state of ed-ucation in School Dis-trict 5.

“We need the pre-mier to listen to what we’re saying. It’s not about a bunch of union rabble rousers out here. We have a message; we need her to listen,” said Balfour.

“Christy is always touting about families – we are about fami-lies. We’re trying to

The B.C. Liberal government an-nounced in January that it hopes to work with the B.C. Teach-ers’ Federation to draft a 10-year collec-

“To be honest, that’s nonsense. Who would sign that? Not in this climate we have. What are our guarantees? Ten years locked into an agree-ment makes no sense to any one of us,” said Balfour.

My sister and her husband are threaten-ing to visit me here in the East Kootenay for only the third time in over 50 years, so I felt it would be my duty to give the duo some warning of what they might expect to en-counter here.

Dear Pamela:We are delighted (and

intrigued) that you and Clifford intend to visit me here in Cranbrook. The whole populace will be de-lighted to meet you and many of them wonder how genetics work. Would it be possible that two people, such as you and I, could be at all alike?

When ‘Jimmy’ and I came here back in 1958, Cranbrook was a tiny town that called itself a city crouched in a hollow between the Rocky Mountains and the Purcell Range. Now, after 54 years, it’s a bit bigger but with grandiose ideas. The sew-age system is much improved and we do have traffic lights to impede our travels.

As to the question you asked about clothing. In spite of eastern opinion of us, civilized clothing (not buck-skins) will be necessary. In fact, wrap up warmly. It will be June — ‘road repair’ season — when you arrive and winter still a month away. It will probably not be as wet as you are ac-customed in Toronto because those so-

called depressions from the Pacific dump rain non-stop on Vancouver but then, find-ing several large mountain ranges in the way, say to themselves, “Let’s go drench Ontario. They deserve it.”

That, I am afraid, is the attitude of locals too. Most of our problems emanate from

Ottawa or somewhere else ‘Back East’, so I shall be forced to point out to you and Clifford that many lo-cals are very fond of guns and hunting. They are in-clined to be fairly peaceful in June, when you plan to visit, but some do have a

penchant for shooting at people from any-where further east than Fernie (see map) and that, I discovered by consulting anoth-er map in an atlas, includes Toronto, where you happen to live. But don’t worry. I have a plan. I shall announce that you are from England; with your accent, I know I’ll get away with it.

If you intend to do any shopping during your sojourn here, I have to point out that we have no ‘Ikea’ nor a ‘Bay’ but, by the time you’ve made your way over the Rock-ies, we should have a ‘Target’ for you to aim at. That must surely thrill you.

By June when you get here, theoretical-ly, it will be blossom time, if severe frosts haven’t killed everything. All kinds of things like wild cherry and dandelions will

be showing off, brightening up the land-scape. Plants being nurtured by the citi-zens, however, will have been frozen for the third or fourth time or eaten by the deer.

The thousands of deer, fed up to the teeth with being shot at out in the rapidly diminishing ‘bush’, have moved into town and set up colonies here. They will not be squeezed into ghettos; they are much too proud for that. However, some people have put themselves into ghettos for safety sake.

As I already stated, June is in that brief time of year that we call jokingly call ‘road repair’ although, quite frequently, city and provincial road crews are on vacation during this time, so there is a good chance that, when you cross the Rockies from Cal-gary, you will be held up by such things as avalanches or huge great holes in the road. Do not venture down into any of these holes as the unfortunate internees may have been there for days and might possi-bly attack you. American tourists can be ferocious.

I hope you’ll give me warning of your impending arrival; I’ve been getting rid of stuff but the house still looks like a land-fill. If I can just persuade my overly-zealous neighbours to stop harassing me about the state of my yard, I shall try to clean up a bedroom for you. Oh, and I must remem-ber to find my razor and new dentures.

Okay, let’s get a few things straight right from the

outset. When we speak of “The Great Divide” we are not talking about anyone dying. We are speaking of the geologi-cal — or more precisely, hydrological — Conti-nental divide, which sep-arates the waters that flow to the Pacific from those of the Atlantic. It runs from the top of Alas-ka to the bottom of South America, and is the title of numerous songs, a band or two, some mov-ies and books and a mi-cro-brewery in Denver, Colorado — but that is of little interest here. The fact that it separates B.C. from Alberta is.

Further, when we speak of “Wilby at the Wheel,” he wasn’t. Oh, he was in the car, all right, but he wasn’t driv-ing. Fonce “Jack” Haney was driving and by the time the trip was over they weren’t speaking to one another. Long trips can do that and this was a very long trip.

Later, when Thomas W. Wilby wrote a book about the adventure he conveniently neglected to mention Mr. Haney at all. Thus, Wilby is gener-ally known as the man of the hour and Haney the other guy. The book

on Tuesday, her purpose was not talking one-on-one with residents in the Platzl, although she did do that as well. Her time was spent talking to business owners on the Platzl.

We have many unique businesses that are doing very well, contrary to rumours of demise in the downtown area. Premier Clark talked to four of these business own-ers, getting a tour of their business and

discussing what and why they are doing it here.

Bridgit Franyo at the Snowdrift was her first stop. She also talked to Ryan Tarves and his partners at the new Spirit Rock Climbing Wall, made chocolate with Steve Moon at La Lune de Chocolat and finally heard Trevor Knight’s inspiring story at Kootenay Mountain Works. It would have been great to showcase more of our fine business community, but the visit was short.

The dozen business owners who sit on

the Downtown Business advisory group are putting a revitization plan together for the downtown area. When actions are im-plemented, the look and feel of the down-town area will reflect the vibrancy of the businesses that are there. Plan to attend the ‘1st Saturday’ activities in the Platzl beginning at about noon this Saturday, May 4. There are a lot of very good reasons to be in downtown Kimberley!

“A Motor Trip through Canada” chronicles the 52-day trip from Halifax to Port Alberni on Van-couver Island in 1912 — the first Trans-Canada automobile trip — and the road passed through Cranbrook.

Travelling across Canada by car in 1912 was no mean feat. The journey traversed the “All Red Route”, the all-Canadian, occasion-ally non-existent, south-ern road-way system marked on maps with the traditional cartogra-pher’s red of Great Brit-ain and was sponsored by Ransom E. Olds, for-mer developer of the Oldsmobile and, at the time, owner of the REO Motor Car Co., with fac-tories in Lansing, Michi-gan, and St. Catherine’s, Ontario. Messrs Wilby — an older English writ-er — and Haney — a young American me-chanic — travelled in a new REO five-seat tour-ing sedan. It was repre-

sentative of the best an auto could offer in the day: A four-cylinder, 35 horsepower engine that could reach a top speed of 38 mph (60 km), a hand-crank starter with an interior spark switch to stop the engine, a three-speed and reverse gear shift in the centre (a new feature), leather seats, acetylene head-

lights with kerosene side and rear lamps, 34-inch wooden spoke wheels, two rear wheel brakes and a 14-gallon gasoline tank. The car retailed at $1,500 Canadian. An-other $100 added the accessories: a top, a top cover, curtains, a wind-shield and a speedome-ter. Always nice to have the extras.

The REO crossed the Continental Divide on Oct. 3, reaching Michel at noon and arriving at the Fort Steele/Wardner junction near dusk, where it was met by four vehicles carrying Cran-brook dignitaries, news-papermen and auto en-thusiasts.

The Kootenay Ice have laid the foundation for future teams by se-lecting ten players in the WHL Bantam Draft on Wednesday in Calgary.

Head scout Garnet Kazuik led the way, working with general manager Jeff Chynoweth and head coach Ryan McGill to make his se-lections, which includ-ed two wingers, three centres, four defence-men and one goalten-der.

“From a scouting perspective, we’re really happy,” said Kazuik. “We walked away very, very happy with the players that we drafted today. It’s exciting for those players today and now they get to have an exciting day and get to work and show us what they got at training camp.”

Kazuik kicked things off with Kootenay’s ninth overall selection in the first round, nab-bing Jared Legien, a winger out of Pilot Butte, Sask. Legien, a 14-year-old, played for the Prai-rie Storm in the Sas-katchewan Bantam AA League, collecting 40

goals and 26 assists in 26 games.

“Jared’s a gifted play-er that has the ability to score goals—shoots the puck very, very well,” said Kazuik.

“He can score, he’s got very good hockey sense, very gifted offen-sively in the offensive zone. As like with most kids, when they’re that young, and they have that offensive talent to them, their game is still evolving.”

Legien will step up into Midget AAA next season, where he will continue to develop, added Kazuik.

“Jared’s going to learn a lot of things this year playing Midget AAA and once he gets under the tutelage of Ryan McGill—Ryan’s going to show him a lot of things [like] defensive zone responsibilities, and being a responsible 200-foot player, so that will come.”

Vince Loschiavo, a centre out of Winnipeg, MB., was chosen in the second round, while Declan Hobbs, a goal-tender in the Greater Saskatoon Hockey League, was picked up in the third round.

Kazuik had a bonan-za of picks in the fifth round, including three consecutive slots in a row, which he used to take Robert Johnson, Dallas Hines and Andy Stevens.

The Ice head scout called it a day after the seventh round.

Staal to lead Canada at world championshipDONNA SPENCER

STOCKHOLM, Swe-den - The Canadian team will look to one of the country’s most dec-orated players for lead-ership at the 2013 IIHF Men’s World Hockey Championship.

Eric Staal was named Canada’s captain Thursday. The 28-year-old from Thunder Bay, Ont., is one of only eight Canadian hockey play-ers to win a world championship, Olym-pic gold medal and Stanley Cup during his career.

Staal was a forward

on the last Canadian team to win a world title in 2007. The Caroli-na Hurricanes captain is the lone player on Canada’s roster for the 2013 world champion-ship who won Olympic gold in 2010. He won a Stanley Cup in 2006.

“It’s an honour, obvi-ously, to play for your country and play with some of the great play-ers we’ve got here,” Staal said Thursday.

“It also means I’m getting older and I’ve been around a little while. We’ve got some young faces in there and guys that are eager to get started. I’m glad I’m going to get an op-portunity to play along-side these guys and have a chance to play in a good tournament and try and win a medal.”

Canada opens the tournament Saturday against Denmark fol-lowed by Switzerland on Sunday at the Globe Arena.

ward Andrew Ladd and Dallas Stars defender Stephane Robidas were chosen assistant cap-tains.

Ladd won Stanley Cups with Carolina (2006) and Chicago (2010). Robidas is the oldest player on the team at 36 and has played in two previous world championships for Canada in 2006 and 2001.

“Eric, coming off a gold-medal win in the Olympics, I think he knows what it takes to win,” Canadian head coach Lindy Ruff said.

“If you look at the other two guys, both players have been in-volved, in one way or the other, in big games

throughout their ca-reers whether it’s for Canada or for their in-dividual teams. All those players are play-ers that the younger guys look up to and re-spect.”

Staal’s younger brother and Hurricanes teammate Jordan is also on Canada’s world championship team in Stockholm.

Eric has been Caroli-na’s captain since 2010. He led the Hurricanes in scoring this lock-out-shortened season with 18 goals and 35 as-sists in 48 games.

He had a goal and five assists for Canada at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver.

The other Canadi-ans to win what is con-sidered hockey’s three biggest prizes and enter the IIHF’s “Triple Gold Club” are Scott Nieder-mayer, Rob Blake, Joe Sakic, Brendan Shana-han, Chris Pronger, Jon-athan Toews and Patrice Bergeron.

Ice alumni go head to head in Stanley Cup playoffs

Two Kootenay Ice alumni are currently slugging in out against each other in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, as Jarret Stoll and his L.A. Kings clash against Adam Cracknell and the rest of the St. Louis Blues.

The two never played together in the same year—Stoll grad-uated to the AHL just as Cracknell began his rookie season in the WHL with the Ice.

Stoll spent four full seasons with the Koo-tenay Ice, winning two WHL championships in 2000 and 2002. He served as captain during the second championship and guided the team to a Memorial Cup champi-onship in Guelph.

Since his days wear-ing an Ice uniform, Stoll has moved to the professional level in the NHL, suiting up for the Edmonton Oilers for five years, before moving on to the L.A. Kings.

Stoll came one win shy of a Stanley Cup with the Oilers in 2006, losing out to the Caroli-na Hurricanes in Game Seven, however, he captured hockey’s most treasured prize last year with the Kings during a remarkable

post season run.Cracknell joined the

Ice in 2003 and played for four seasons under head coach Cory Clouston.

In 2005, Cracknell and the Ice powered into the Western Con-ference final against the Kelowna Rockets,

losing the series in six games.

He was selected in the ninth round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames, and spent time in the AHL under former (and now current) Ice coach Ryan McGill.

Cracknell ended up in the St. Louis Blues system after signing as an unrestricted free agent in 2009. He has suited up for the Peoria Riverman—the Blues’ AHL affiliate—and led as captain in the 2011/12 season.

Cracknell’s season with the Rivermen ended with the team outside of the Calder Cup playoff picture, h ow e v e r, t h e right-winger got called up by his parent NHL club to join the Blues for the end of their sea-son at the beginning of April.

In 33 games, Benson tallied 57 gals and 89 as-sists for 146 points.

Benson was highly touted as the player who would be taken first overall, and there wasn’t a lot of other surprises as each franchise made their picks throughout every round, said Ka-zuik.

“That’s the beautiful thing about the draft, is that we know there’s 22 teams, there’s 22 lists that are totally different, so no, there’s no surpris-es, but we’re just happy with the guys that we drew out and we were fortunate to get a lot of guys that we liked,” Ka-zuik said.

TORONTO - The To-ronto Blue Jays are look-ing to a familiar face to replace ailing starter Josh Johnson.

Left-hander Ricky Romero will make his season debut Friday after Toronto placed right-hander Johnson on the 15-day disabled list Thursday.

Johnson missed his last start due to inflam-mation in his right tri-ceps. The move is retro-active to April 29.

“Yesterday we thought he was going to be OK,” said Toronto manager John Gibbons. “He went out, played some catch, throw his bullpen, but then he started complaining

‘y’know what, it really hasn’t gone away.’

“He was still a little bit concerned about it.”

Johnson is 0-1 with a 6.86 earned-run average in four starts since being acquired in an off-sea-son trade with the Miami Marlins.

“He’d been feeling pretty good, but he hadn’t thrown in a while, but then he played catch on the side (Wednesday) and it felt pretty good but he still hadn’t aired it out,” said Gibbons. “He was airing it out a little before stepping on the mound and he heard alarm bells.”

Romero has 125 ca-reer starts with Toronto with a 51-43 record and 4.09 ERA. However, the 2011 all-star struggled in

spring training and started the season in the minors to work on his mechanics.

He had one start with single-A Dunedin, al-lowing one run on six hits in seven innings.

“(Blue Jays roving pitching instructor Dane Johnson) felt he was ready to go,” said Gib-bons. “Ricky feels good, he’s anxious to do it.”

Toronto also recalled right-hander Brad Lin-coln from triple-A Buffa-lo but Gibbons said the Blue Jays will make a move after Thursday’s game against Boston to make space for Romero.

Lincoln has made two appearances for the major league club this season, allowing two runs in two innings.

The travellers stayed overnight at the Cran-brook Hotel and at-tended a ceremony in front of City Hall at noon the next day. Mr. DeVere Hunt — speak-ing on behalf of Mayor Bowness who was suf-fering from a sore throat — called it a “red-letter day” for Cranbrook. Mr. Wilby, in reply, stated he could not say much as his heart was full of the splendid reception he had received since en-tering B.C., especially in Cranbrook. Shortly thereafter the REO left town amidst cheers from the large crowd, headed for Yahk, and on to the Pacific.

Mr. Wilby speaks of Cranbrook in his book published in 1914: “Su-perb trails and roads led into the town, the pilot car dashing off at a clip which would have brought disaster on anything but a first-class surface. The town itself received us with open-handed hospital-ity. Cranbrookites are never tired of telling strangers of the won-derful valley which will soon be open to motor tourists by the con-struction of a scenic road from Cranbrook to Banff. Cranbrook was interesting but at first sight there was not much to see. It seemed to be about the size of a man’s pocket-handker-chief, a mere village in dimensions. A hotel ... a railroad station, a modest town hall, a few more or less sleepy stores, a formless back

street or two, a chaotic pavement and a YMCA building ... that was all.

“But Cranbrook had hidden riches. Like many another town of the West, it had men who had interpreted education in the terms of opportunity and progress and commu-nal welfare, who were using it as an instru-ment which would solve for them the problem of a social life free from the trammels of tradition. It had no wastrels, no drones, no men of leisure. No one was hurrying, but nei-ther was any one wast-

ing strength or capital, foresight or initiative. Cranbrook is the home of the self-made man. Culture and refinement are not ordinarily the weapons with which Nature hews out the wilderness.”

Ouch! Though often marvelling at the scen-ery throughout the journey, the author’s humour betrays a cer-tain arrogance con-cerning the people and places along the route. Undoubtedly many who cheered him on only to later read of themselves and their town cast in the au-thor’s condescending light might have pre-ferred that Mr. Wilby, when he reached the Pacific Ocean in Octo-ber, 1912, continued driving.

As for crossing the Great Divide, Messrs Wilby and Haney were not the first. The first recorded automobile to travel the Crows Nest Pass (the first pass in the Rockies capable of being traversed by an automobile) occurred in September, 1910, when Cranbrook resi-dent Dr. F.W. Green and companions, Messrs Beattie, Staples and Supple, travelled to Coleman and points east.

Last week, I sug-gested a new way of dealing with

our enemies, a way of seeking to discover how we might work and live together in more peace-ful ways.

Jim Wallis’ book continues to inspire me as I read it. These kinds of creative ways of learning to live togeth-er are even more ger-mane in the light of tragedies like the Bos-ton Marathon bombing or the discovery of the plot to blow up the VIA train.

Our first instinct is denial. How can this be? Who would do something like this?

That is followed al-most immediately by a desire to strike back. We feel fear and anger, and we want to do whatever we need to in order to feel more se-cure. In the wake of the tragedy in Boston, talk shows and bloggers’ keyboards spewed vengeful words. One comment that caught my attention was “We must catch them alive and make them suffer as much as possible. That will pay them back for what they did.” Peo-

ple like that seem to equate justice with re-venge.

President Obama and other leaders promised that the re-sponsible individuals or parties would “feel the full weight of jus-tice.”

The question in situ-ations like this always is “But what is justice?”

The trouble with re-acting violently is that violence always begets more violence. Gandhi put it succinctly when he said, “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.” Paul ex-horted the Romans, “Repay no one evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all … Beloved, never avenge your-selves, but leave it to God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord. (Romans 12:17, 19).”

When we humans seek vengeance, we perpetuate and intensi-fy the cycle of violence.

But what does it mean to repay evil with good? It certainly does not mean to let the marathon bombing suspect currently in

custody go free, with no accountability for his actions. How can we break the cycle of vio-lence?

Rev. Dr. Martin Lu-ther King followed in the footsteps of Gandhi in his embrace of non–violent resistance. He reminded us that “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate can-not drive out hate; only love can do that.”

We are only begin-ning to understand the power of love in re-sponse to hate. Gandhi entitled his autobiogra-phy “The Story of My Experiments with Truth” because he be-lieved in experimenting with the power of love. He likened the power of love to the early days of electricity, when inven-

tors were only just be-ginning to discover the potential of its power. Bold experimentation was needed to explore what was possible. In the same way, he ex-plained, the human race is in the early days of exploring the power of love. We need bold experimentation to see what is possible, to see how love can drive out hate.

One courageous ex-perimenter, Archbish-op Desmond Tutu, led the Truth and Recon-ciliation Commission in South Africa after apartheid ended. While many had predicted a bloodbath at the end of apartheid, Tutu imag-ined a space for people to share the hurt they had experienced and the hurt they had in-flicted, and to be met with forgiveness and love. The road was long. Tutu met much resistance along the way. But he persevered and the Truth and Rec-onciliation Commis-sion’s work over the course of 18 months transformed much bit-terness and hatred into understanding and for-giveness. The blood-

In ways similar to Tutu’s work with the Truth and Reconcilia-tion Commission, other countries have experimented with re-storative justice. Cran-brook is involved in this movement, and it works wonders as vic-tims and perpetrators are reconciled through a process of conversa-tion and understand-

ing and restoration.Gandhi reminded us

that love and non–vio-lence is not simply a passive acceptance. Rather, “nonviolence is an active force of the highest order.” It seeks to reach out across the chasm that divides, to bridge it.

What would it be like if, instead of re-sponding to violence with vengeance, we imagined ways for love to drive out hate? Seek-ing to lead with love doesn’t mean having

all the answers. It means living the Gos-pel imaginatively. What if we, like Gandhi, Tutu, and King, banded to-gether with others to experiment with the power of love? May we commit ourselves to breaking the cycle of vi-olence, to channeling our imaginations and our energy to find a new way. The Gospel requires nothing less.

Dear Annie: My husband and I have a blended family with his two girls and my three sons. I am so grateful that we both took on this challenge.

We had some good times, and we had some bad times, and when I say bad, I mean horrible. Our children are all adults now, and we are still butting heads over them, mostly my boys. He has given up on two of my sons because he says they don’t respect him, not to mention some less than legal activity they decided to embark on in our home while we were on vacation.

But, Annie, I feel as if he has never really cared for them. I try to help them with rides or letting them wash clothes at our house or whatever I can do. People mature at differ-ent levels, and maybe I help too much, but they are my kids. At what point am I sup-posed to turn my back on them? My hus-band says that because I help them against his wishes, it means I love them more than him. That isn’t true.

One son is homeless and has to look for a place to stay every night. That breaks my heart. My husband found him downstairs sleeping one morning and told me that I’d better get him out or he would call the po-lice. He won’t even allow me to let my son shower here.

I realize the boys need to make it on their own, but am I supposed to turn my back on them when they need help? At what point do you give up on your kids and choose your husband instead? I feel like such a horrible mom. -- Worried for Them

Dear Worried: Your husband should not be issuing ultimatums wherein you must choose between the man you love and the children you love. This is unfair and creates tremendous resentment. Your husband may have good cause to want the kids out of the house, but it’s difficult to do when they have no place to go. How old are they? Do they have jobs? Would you temporarily assist with their rent if it got them out of the house? Are there substance-abuse issues that need treatment? Dear Annie: I am one of five siblings. My brother was married last fall in a small cer-emony that was put together quickly so my mother could be there before she died. He is having a celebration of his marriage later this summer, and the party is being held in another state on the day before my wedding anniversary.

My brother’s party would require travel, hotel and meals. My husband and I have already booked (and paid for) a nonrefund-able weekend getaway and made arrange-ments with his parents to watch our kids. We did this three months before my brother sent out his save-the-date cards.

How do I break the news to my brother? I should add that I am rarely included in anything the rest of the family does, and I worry that if I miss this event, I will never be included in anything again. -- Little Sis

Dear Sis: Call your brother and let him know you have a conflict. Tell him you are heartbroken to miss his party and wish you could find a way out of your nonre-fundable reservations, but it’s not possible. Then send him a lovely wedding gift to make up for your absence. These things happen. There’s nothing more you can do.

Dear Annie: This is for “N.N.,” whose hus-band is depressed. Please tell her to have him tested for celiac disease. Depression is one of the symptoms.

My husband was depressed for a long pe-riod of time and even threatened to take his life. We were finally able to determine that he had celiac disease. Doctors are not that familiar with the symptoms. -- Betty

April 27, 2013Roy Garnet Malberg passed away on April 27, 2013.

Roy is survived by Arthur (twin brother), Ross (Helen), John (El len). Roy was predeceased by his father Olaf who passed away in 1970 and his mother Freida who passed away in 1992.

Roy was born in Carlea, Saskatchewan. He worked in the logging industry and enjoyed his music and friends.

A special thanks to his caregivers Tony and Nicole.

There will be no service. There will be a gathering of family and friends on Saturday, May 3 at 704 Jostad Avenue from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers it is asked that you make a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC.

TRAIL, B.C. — There was a lot of wriggling going on along the banks of the Columbia River through Trail, B.C., this week — and that was just the sturgeon.

The kids were pretty excited, too.

More than 700 Trail-area students helped release some of the 4,000 hatchery-raised ju-venile sturgeon into the river near Beaver Creek as part of the annual Upper Columbia White Sturgeon Recovery Initiative (UCWSRI).

Although some of the chil-dren were a little squeamish about handling the wriggling live fish, others were thrilled with the opportunity.

“The first one was awe-some,’’ said seven-year-old, Grade 2 student, Meghan Han-cock. “Touching one... wow!’’

The Recovery Initiative has been studying the dwindling numbers of wild sturgeon in the Columbia since 2000 and has been releasing hatch-ery-raised fish into the water-

way since 2002.“The main reason we have

to do this release is because of what is referred to as a failure to recruit by the sturgeon,’’ said UCWRSI official, Gerry Nellestijn.

“We know they’re breeding, we know the eggs are hatching, but they’re not making it to the juvenile stage. Without the conservative aquaculture pro-gram there would be no surviv-al of sturgeon in the Columbia River.’’

According to Nellestijn the lack of wild juvenile sturgeon means that, at present, all the naturally occurring sturgeon in the Upper Columbia are at least 50 years-old.

He says adding the hatchery fish ensures a variable age range of the stock.

Each fish is implanted with a tag so they can be tracked electronically as they swim by monitoring stations.

“Sturgeon can live 100 years so this is definitely a time-will-tell program,’’ said Nellestijn. “Males don’t mature until they’re 15 years-old and fe-

males at 18 to 20 years. What we have embarked on is an aquaculture program that will take two decades to determine if we can provide successful breeders into the system.’’

Because the sturgeon are so long-lived Nellestijn says that the program requires a long term commitment from the

public.“With these tags these kids

will be able to track these fish for the rest of their lives,’’ said Nellestijn. “That’s one of the reasons we think it’s so import-ant to involve the kids in this program. They’re almost junior biologists, we need them as ambassadors.’’

The City of Revelstoke’s new livestock policy made its public debut at an April 25 planning committee meeting, starting a public consultation process that will likely happen in the next several weeks.

The proposed policy out-lines where chickens, bees and other livestock will be allowed in Revelstoke, and what rules those who keep the animals must follow.

Chickens will be permitted in most zones in Revelstoke, except for the downtown core and some denser neighbour-hoods.

Some basics apply. Female birds only. A coop must be supplied for the birds. Bear aware mitigation measures must be taken, although the draft policy doesn’t say what that means.

Although chickens are pro-posed to be allowed on most properties, a rule dictating they not be allowed within five me-tres of a property line effective-ly eliminates many residences.

North Columbia Environ-mental Society (NCES) presi-dent Sarah Newton is happy the city is moving forward with formally allowing backyard chickens, noting local food production is a high priority in terms of climate change adap-tion and mitigation. “We’re pleased that they’re taking it

seriously,” she said.However, Newton said the

NCES had extensive consulta-tions with the city and stake-holders such as Revelstoke Bear Aware, including provid-ing the planning department with comprehensive docu-mentation and examples from other communities like Vernon and Vancouver. She said she is “disappointed” the current policy lacks these details, something she’d like to see in-cluded.

“I would like [the livestock policy] to go to the environ-mental advisory committee,” Newton said. It was her under-standing the policy was still up for other internal stakeholder review, and was surprised to hear it was heading for public review already.

Newton said the NCES would likely take issue with the five-metre rule because it ef-fectively shuts out many homes on smaller lots.

The policy restricts bee-keeping to larger rural proper-ties outside of the downtown core. Beekeeping is permitted on only a few larger properties. Rules dictate how the hive must be kept and also provide for ‘flyway barriers’ – a tall fence that forces bees to fly upwards. Hive locations must be coordinated with the Bear Aware coordinator.

“It’s very appropriate that there’s criteria for what’s ac-ceptable and appropriate,” he said. “It gives some good guide-lines to work with. There’s nothing in there that’s really glaring that seems unfair or un-reasonable.”

Pigs aren’t allowed, but goats, sheep, horses, cows, al-pacas, llamas and donkeys are. Rules specify how many of each are allowed – such as up to four sheep but only one cow.

The map showing where they’re allowed is the most re-strictive – only a few scattered rural properties in outlying neighbourhoods.

There are several other re-

strictions, such as on cleanli-ness, feeding and distance to the property line. Effectively, hoofed animals would be al-lowed on a select few proper-ties.

Revelstoke Bear Aware co-ordinator Sue Davies said the organization would like to see several more rules and require-ments added.

They’d like to see provisions for a club or registry for bee-keepers and those raising chickens. The idea is to raise standards and education about proper techniques, especially ones that would prevent at-tracting bears.

She notes beehives, chick-ens and chicken feed are all bear attractants.

Revelstoke will soon allow its residents to keep chickens.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland has become the first southern U.S. state to abolish the death penalty.

Democratic Gov. Martin O’Mal-ley signed the measure Thursday. Attending was former Maryland death row inmate Kirk Blood-sworth. He is the first person in the country freed because of DNA evi-dence after being convicted in a death penalty case.

Maryland is the 18th state to abolish the death penalty and the sixth state in as many years to do so.

The bill will not apply to the five men the state has on death row, but the governor can commute their sentences to life without parole. O’Malley has said he will consider

them on a case-by-case basis. The state’s last execution was in 2005.

Supporters of capital punish-ment said the governor was taking away an important tool to protect the public. Neil Parrott, chairman of a group called MDPetitions.com, scheduled a news conference on Friday to announce the group’s de-cision on whether to launch a peti-tion drive to try to put the death penalty ban on the ballot for voters to decide in 2014.

Last year, the Death Penalty In-formation Center said just four states carried out more than three-fourths of the executions in the United States last year, while anoth-er 23 had not put an inmate to death in 10 years.

of the civil rights group National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, noted the signif-icance of a southern Democratic governor with presidential aspira-tions leading an effort to ban capi-tal punishment.

Jealous noted that in 1992, then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton left the presidential campaign trail to oversee the execution of a man who had killed a police officer, a move widely viewed as an effort to shed the Democratic Party’s image as soft on crime.

O’Malley considering seeking the 2016 presidential nomination.

RIYADH, Saudi Ara-bia — Saudi Arabia’s Health Ministry said Thursday that five peo-ple have died and two other patients were in critical condition with confirmed cases of a new respiratory virus re-lated to SARS.

The ministry said in a statement that it had in-formed the World Health Organization of the seven new cases of novel coronavirus.

The germ is from a family of viruses that cause the common cold, as well as SARS — the severe acute respiratory syndrome that killed some 800 people, most-ly in Asia, in a 2003 epi-demic. Health experts still aren’t sure how hu-mans are being infect-ed. The new coronavi-rus, which can cause acute pneumonia and kidney failure, is most closely related to a bat virus and scientists are considering whether bats or other animals like goats or camels are

a possible source of in-fection.

Since September 2012, WHO has been in-formed of 24 confirmed cases. Sixteen of the pa-tients died.

The new virus was first identified last year in the Middle East and several of the people in-fected had all travelled to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan or Pakistan.

WHO says the virus is probably more wide-spread than just the Middle East and has ad-vised countries to test any people with unex-plained pneumonia. In Saudi Arabia last year, four members of the same family fell ill and two died.

The Saudi govern-ment is conducting an ongoing investigation into the outbreak.

The seven people who contracted the virus are not from the same family and there is no indication that any of them were in contact with animals or had travelled recently.

A father-and-son team of biologists say flocks of envi-ronmental monitors are the best way to keep track of the increasing chemical contami-nation of the world’s oceans.

But these monitors aren’t lab-coated scientists — they’re seabirds, whose wide-ranging flights make them a cheap and effective way to gather infor-mation over vast stretches of ocean that would be prohibi-tively costly to visit.

“In an afternoon at a sea-bird colony, for a hundred dol-lars in gas, you can get infor-mation that would cost hun-dreds of thousands of dollars and lots of time by boat,’’ said Kyle Elliott of the University of Manitoba.

Elliott co-wrote a paper that appeared Thursday in the journal Science with his father John, an Environment Canada

are made-to-order lab assis-tants, as they pick up traces of whatever’s in the local envi-ronments they fly over in their wide-ranging migrations.

said.Some seabirds feed over

the open ocean, some along the continental shelf and some in close to land. Each, through its tissues and eggs, opens a window into what’s happen-ing in that environment.

By comparing modern samples to samples kept in storage and in museums, birds can also illuminate how things have changed, said Elliott.

Many countries, including Canada, already conduct bird-sampling studies. It was through bird samples that sci-entists confirmed increases in contaminants such as mercu-ry.

But Elliott says new tech-nology, such as tiny, so-lar-powered GPS units trans-mitting data to satellites, has made such research even more useful. Better techniques allow scientists to wring more information from their sam-ples, including the geographic source of contaminants.

As well, the need is increas-ing as the chemical and con-taminant load in the oceans increases. Even banned chem-icals continue circulating in the environment for decades, eventually migrating into the oceans.

Hundreds of different types of plastics are regularly found in seabird stomachs.
