KidsQuest Children’s Museum Annual Report 2013

Our Mission: Create learning through the power of play and exploration that connects children to their communities and the world.

In December KidsQuest celebrated its eighth birthday. Like any eight year old, KidsQuest is on

the move, growing, changing, and ready for the next challenge. In 2013, KidsQuest focused on

Growing a Network of Teachers, Bringing Science to Students, and Preparing for the Future.

The 158,346 visitors who explored, played and learned at

KidsQuest this year are a testament to the important role the Museum

plays in the Eastside community. We look forward to another exciting

year of growth as we prepare to move to our permanent home, and we are thankful for all of the donors,

members and friends that support KidsQuest in its mission.

Letter from the President

Growing a Network of TeachersEducation is a powerful thing. This year, KidsQuest invested in all teachers: schoolteachers, parents, and the KidsQuest staff. We:

• Introduced a teacher training program that helps local schoolteachers incorporate science into the classroom in fun and engaging ways.

• Taught parents how to educate their kids. Based on a Boeing-funded research project KidsQuest completed in partnership with two other children’s museums, KidsQuest discovered that dramatic and creative play can be a challenge for parents. In response, the Museum developed several new Kid Kits, added rotating exhibit props and signage, and incorporated tips on how to expand creative play into our popular storytimes.

• Expanded STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education training for all KidsQuest Guest Experience staff that work directly with families.

In-Museum Field Trip Participants Field Trip to Go Participants

Bringing Science to StudentsKidsQuest is always on the move, thanks to its successful Field Trip to Go program. The number of Field Trip to Go’s KidsQuest went on in 2013 increased by 33% over 2012, serving 2,064 more children and teachers. In the summer, KidsQuest hired an additional Museum Educator to help meet the demand for the 130 school visits between June and August. KidsQuest’s field trip programs continue to teach crucial STEAM topics (science, technology, engineering, art and math) for children in preschool through 6th grade.

Investing in the Future

Preparing for the FutureThe KidsQuest leadership team has been working hard to raise the funds required to open KidsQuest’s new home. Our community has already invested $3.8M and we are 30% of the way to our goal. We are planning to close on the purchase of our new home by December 2014, and are working to raise another $4M between now and then to enable us to do so.

KidsQuest leadership and trustees are also working closely with The City of Bellevue and neighboring businesses downtown to secure convenient parking for KidsQuest’s new location.

Plans for the new museum are well underway. KidsQuest’s new home will balance STEM activities with opportunities for social and dramatic play, educating the whole child. Exhibit galleries will be multi-aged so that families with multiple children can explore together. The new space will integrate favorite concepts from the current museum (water play, a train table, the semi truck), and new concepts (an outdoor space, an art studio, a two story climber).
