FINALLY, children can plumb the depths of the sea while keeping their feet anchored on dry land.

From July 9 to 13, children can dive into the mysteries of the world beneath the waves while learning the fundamentals of chemistry at the Oceans and Potions camp at Capilano University.

The new camp from High Touch High Tech offers children between the ages of fi ve and eight a chance to feel like deep sea divers and beachcombers, all without getting their hair wet or risking a sunburn.

“I’m from Saskatchewan so when I fi rst moved out here, I remember beachcombing for the fi rst time and being squirted from beneath the sand, and I was just fascinated,” says Alison Jamieson, the owner of High Touch High Tech.

While a counsellor at day camp, Jamieson says she used to take her kids beachcombing and was always impressed by the quiet hours they’d spend studying the small details and hidden creatures of the shoreline.

Inspired by those days at the beach, Jamieson organized the new camp, one of several week-long camps offered by High Touch High Tech at Capilano University this summer.

One of the camp’s highlights involves a sharp surgical tool.

“We also do squid dissection and the kids get a

chance to extract the ink and make a writing pen to take home,” Jamieson says.

However, once the ink is removed, it isn’t quite ready for paper.

That’s the stage where chemistry comes into play, according to Jamieson.

“We are using the ink from the squid but making it into an ink the kids can actually use to write with,” she says.

The interaction of different chemicals is often fascinating for children, according to Jamieson.

“Kids always love potions,” Jamieson says. “They love the chemistry part, so what we thought was, ‘We’ll focus most of our time on the oceans and what lives beneath it, but we’ll also add in a little bit of chemistry and some

chemical reactions.’”One of the most hypnotic

creatures the children study are luminescent deep-sea fi sh.

“Deep sea creatures have special light-producing organs called photophores that help them glow. We actually have a chemical that would show the same sort of reaction,” Jamieson says.

The camp’s emphasis on chemistry extends to dealing with oil spills and studying the effect of oil on marine animals.

“The kids have an opportunity to learn about pH levels,” Jamieson says.

The campers use litmus paper to test the pH levels of ocean water while learning about chemicals that help with oil spills, according to Jamieson.

The analysis of the water often leads to discoveries about the salt content of ocean water and its effect on the buoyancy of objects.

Kids get to see that buoyancy in action when they make their own submarine, Jamieson says. But for pure thrills, one of the most fascinating sea creatures is the betta fi sh, more commonly known as the Siamese fi ghting fi sh.

“They place a mirror up to the tank, and it just has a great reaction,” Jamieson says, explaining the betta fi sh’s tendency to lash out at its refl ection.

Owls and wolves and bears, oh my!Jen St. [email protected]

THIS summer on Grouse Mountain, kids have the chance to learn life-saving survival skills, get up close and personal with wolves, bears and owls, and go behind the scenes of a ski hill.

“Our main goal with

the summer camps for kids is to get them aware of the wilderness . . . and the power of nature that’s right in their back yard,” said Sarah Lusk, a spokeswoman for Grouse Mountain.

The week-long day camps are offered for kids aged eight to 14.

Camps start on July 2 and continue throughout July and August. Each day of camp has a different theme and activities, and parents can

either book the whole week or individual days.

On Monday, campers will start their day by helping one of Grouse Mountain’s wildlife rangers feed breakfast to the mountain’s resident timber wolves, Alpha, Beta and Omega. (The wolves are retired movie actors, said Lusk.) They’ll also get a peek inside an actual bear den (not currently occupied by bears), and go on a wildlife sketching walk to discover

Grouse Mountain from an animal’s perspective.

On Tuesday, survival experts will teach campers how to build a fi re using just a chocolate bar and a pop can, how an orange garbage bag can save your life, and other wilderness survival skills.

Wednesday is all about birds, as campers get a chance to meet the mountain’s resident barn owl, Tyto. Kids will also get lessons from professional falconers, fi nd

our what owls eat, take part in a bird-banding workshop, and learn about Grouse Mountain’s hummingbird monitoring network.

For kids who want to know how things work, Thursday’s behind-the-scenes programming will reveal all. Campers will fi nd out how Grouse Mountain’s wind turbine runs, hunt for elusive salamanders on a walk to Blue Grouse Lake, and get an up-close look at the mechanics of a snow machine.

Friday wraps up with storytelling, dancing and crafts led by a Squamish elder at the

Hiwus feasthouse. Campers will spend the afternoon learning how to toss an axe and roll logs with the Grouse Mountain lumberjacks.

Lusk said the summer camps at Grouse offer kids a chance to be in nature while they’re learning about it, and get up close and personal with mountain animals.

“That’s one thing that Grouse has that’s really unique,” said Lusk. “We do have feathered friends, from wolves to grizzly bears, and we give them . . . an appreciation of the environment and sustainability.”

Kidding Around

If you have busy, active kids and a full time job, you’re probably looking for healthy ways to keep them occupied this summer.

This year North Shore Taekwondo is off ering their award-winning children’s programs in a series of summer camps.

Running Monday to Friday from July 9-27 and August 13-24, the week long camps combine Taekwondo training with exciting and engaging outdoor activities to give children as young as four a chance to learn self-defense skills and street-proofi ng.

“Each day will off er fun and exciting Taekwondo drills and challenging games designed to promote team work and individual focus,” says Master Tony Kook. “Students will learn practical self defense skills, from dealing with bullies to street sense and stranger safety. Some of the organized afternoon activities we have planned include bowling, laser tag, swimming, outdoor games and gymnastics.”

Founded on a philosophy of patience, respect, humility and love, children get martial arts training, learn discipline and meet new friends.

North Shore Taekwondo Summer Camps are for everyone because having fun, learning something new and enjoying great exercise is what a quality lifestyle is all about. We provide

experience and expertise in leading fi rst-class camps for children and youth. The main thing our camp off ers that they can’t get anywhere else is the perfect balance of character development- like focus, confi dence, and respect- with fun enjoyable activities and practical life skills.

One thing your child will also get is a team of experts dedicated to their success.

“We emphasize the importance of a healthy mind and healthy body. Our passionate and enthusiastic instructors work very hard to see all the students succeed. If you’re looking for a summer camp that leaves your child happy, healthy and with new valuable life skills, you owe it to yourself to fi nd out if the Summer Camps at North Shore taekwondo are right for your family.
