Kidney Central
What is This App?Purpose and Objectives
The purpose and ultimate goal of this app is to help people
who are in desperate need of a kidney find one fast.
There are a lot more people who need organs in the world
than you may think. The organ must be a perfect match for
the recipient or it will not function and could reject overall.
It’s very hard to find a donor for any organ especially a kidney
whether its from someone who is a live donor or a deceased
donor. Serena Dasilva, Kidney Central, February 5 2014
Why Is This App So Important? This app would be crucial for so many people all
over the world and this problem needs to be
solved because;
There are over 80,000 people on the kidney
transplant waiting list and many people wait more
than 5 years for a kidney from a deceased donor.
The waiting list has doubled in size over the past
10 years and it continues to grow.
4,500 people die every year waiting for a kidney
transplant.Serena Dasilva, Kidney Central, February 5

My Relationship to This Problem My mom was diagnosed with kidney disease at the age of 17.
She had her first kidney transplant by the age of 30 and that kidney was donated by her mother who was surprisingly a match for her.
In May of the year 2013 she was told that her donated kidney was no longer functioning and she would need another transplant soon or she would be put on
dialysis. She was put on the waiting list and the estimated wait time for a kidney was about 5
years. She was then put on dialysis after that for 4 months.During this process my father involved himself in a kidney exchange program.
This means that my father donates his kidney to a stranger who is the same kidney type as him and another stranger who matches donates to my mother.
In November they received a call saying that they had found the perfect people for my parents
On December 16, 2013, my father donated one of his kidneys to a stranger and my mom received hers also from a complete stranger donor.
