Introducing the Kick Up Your Sentences with the Parts of Speech! Poster To introduce each part of speech on the Poster, write the following sentences on your classroom board, with plenty of room above each of them so that you have room to label the parts of speech above each sentence: Cass and Joseph play soccer after school. We need a new ball before our next game. Wow! Chloe has already scored two goals. Explain to your class that these three sentences contain all the parts of speech on the Kick Up Your Sentences with the Parts of Speech! Poster, some of them more than once. Going in the order below, work with your students to identify the part of speech of each of the words. Read the part of speech and its definition from the Poster, then ask students to identify all the words in the sentences that are that part of speech. Provide students with the following simple abbreviations as a student correctly identifies each part of speech: n = noun v = verb pron = pronoun art = article conj = conjunction prep = preposition adj = adjective adv = adverb int = interjection After completing this exercise, be sure to explain that the same word may be a different part of speech in a different sentence, depending on how it is used. For example, rewrite the first sentence to read Cass and Joseph went to a play after school. Have students look at the word play in both sentences to identify one as a verb and one as a noun. Remind students to read the entire sentence to understand the meaning of the words before they begin to identify any of the parts of speech. Challenge students to rewrite the remaining three sentences to change the part of speech for one of the words, then identify the parts of speech for the new usage. Parts of Speech Reference Sheet Copy and distribute the Parts of Speech Mini Poster Reproducible for students to keep in their writing folder for reference. Parts of Speech Brainstorm Create reference charts for different parts of speech by brainstorming with your students. Choose one part of speech to work with and write that part of speech at the top of a sheet of chart paper or on your classroom board. For pronouns, interjections, prepositions, or conjunctions—of which there are a fairly limited number—have students come up with as many of these words as possible and write them on the chart paper or board. For nouns, verbs, adjectives, or adverbs—of which there can be many—you can limit the discussion to a category of word, such as animals or food for nouns, or colors for adjectives, or to a unit of study. Post the charts around your room so that students can refer to the many words they know for the different parts of speech. Parts of Speech Hunt Have students use text around the classroom to learn to identify different parts of speech: Write the following simple abbreviations for the parts of speech on the classroom whiteboard: adj = adjective adv = adverb art = article conj = conjunction int = interjection n = noun prep = preposition pron = pronoun v = verb Students each take a sheet of paper and pencil and look for 10 different sentences that are displayed somewhere in the classroom. They write down each sentence on the paper, along with where in the room they saw the text. They then identify the parts of speech in all the sentences using the abbreviations you listed on the board. Or, tailor the assignment to just the parts of speech the students are currently studying. Parts of Speech Soccer Reinforce different parts of speech with this challenging soccer game: Label several sentence strips with sentences that utilize all the parts of speech. Make a copy of the Soccer Game Reproducible and cut out the patterns. Draw a large soccer field on your classroom board, place a goal pattern at each end, and Kick Up Your Sentences with the Parts of Speech!
