• All GCSE subjects are graded from 9-1.

• Grade 4 is considered a standard pass, grade 5 is considered a strong pass.

• Students entered for foundation tier can access grades from 5 – 1.

GCSE English at BHS



English Language• All students will take their GCSE Language exams at

the end of Year 10.

• In our current Year 11, 86% of students have 4+, 66% have 5+ and 14% have 7+.

• (For comparative purposes: 4+ national is 62%, 5+ national is 44%, 7+ national is 14%).

• ALL students have the option to resit in Year 11.

• If a student resits the exam, whichever of the two grades is HIGHER will be taken as the FINAL grade.







Grades reported for Component 3 are Pass (P), Merit (M), Distinction (D) or Not Classified (NC).

On a students’ results form it will look something like: J Bloggs 6D.



Preparation• Year 10 students have FOUR HOURS per week for English

lessons. The vast majority of groups have two teachers, with a 2/2 split in terms of teacher time.

• The final SLD of this year will involve a mock exam under full exam conditions – either in the Sports Hall or in those rooms used by students with access arrangements.

• After school sessions will be run by individual teachers closer to the exams.

• Intervention groups and sessions will be in place for those felt to be in need of extra support, where possible.

• There will be a dedicated day of revision during the Spring Bank half-term (date tbc).

website.

• BBC bitesize – remember Eduqas is the exam board.

• GCSEPods.

• Full day revision in school during the Spring Bank half-term holiday.

GCSEPods• Short revision videos for all topic areas in each subject, exam board specific. School subscribe to this resource,

students should already have login details.

Seneca learning• Exam board specific revision for most subjects delivered using written information, videos and quiz activities.

Students can sign up and use for free. There is a link on the school website that takes students to a BHS page with courses/exam board specific to our curriculum.

BBC Bitesize• Exam board specific revision for most subjects containing revision and test activities. It is free to use and students

can create an account allowing them to add subjects relevant to them.

Google classroom• Used by many departments to share revision resources, students will be given an invite code.

Subject Support atBrighouse High School

• PE: Catch-up & Revision club is on every Thursday lunchtime with me in G10.

• Art club: Most lunchtimes lunches and after school on a Monday

• HSC: F4 Thursday lunch for coursework support (Year 10's were on learning time last half term - they will start their first coursework task this term).

• RS: Drop in on Thursday lunchtime in G5 for all KS4.

• KS4: Homework/Coursework support: Monday Lunch S9

• Design Tech: • After school workshops on a Thursday with students undertaking GCSE DT. • Run from 3.10pm until 4.10pm.
