A well-designed interior employsthree layers of light:

Ambient or general lighting serves as the base. It

creates a space with workable light but without much

drama. The architecture and interior details often fall

into the shadows and workspaces may not have

sufcient illumination.

Accent lighting adds interest and depth to a space. An

unlit tray ceiling looks at and foreboding; when lit it com-

mands attention. Over-cabinet lighting enlarges the visual

perception of the room. Toekick lighting adds interest

to the previously ignored oor. Lighted cabinets and

under counters provide depth to the room. And well-

placed pendants highlighting a counter add a stylish

nishing touch to a room.

Task lighting helps illuminate areas where chores

often take place under a cabinet in a kitchen or over a

desk in an ofce. It makes a dark space more useable

and functional.

When layering with light, remember:

U Incorporate multiple switching options so the homeowner can use the light in a variety of ways:

toekicks only at night, accent lights while entertaining, task and general lights on during food prep, etc.

U For larger rooms consider controlling regional areas separately.

Installation employs three Design Pro LED Modular under-cabinet lighting xtures under each shelf. Each glass front cabinet hidesone Design Pro LED Disc inside with another disc mounted below each section for a total of six. 19' of Design Pro LED Linear isused above the side cabinets. 16' of Design Pro LED Linear is used in the side toekick and 8' is used on front and back toekickof the rear island. The center island under-counter edge is wrapped in 20' of Design Pro LED Linear and the rear island uses8' of Design Pro LED Linear under the front and rear edge of the counter. Four Kichler Lighting semi ush 42386 MIZ are usedon the ceiling, a 42385 MIZ pendant is used in the rear breakfast area and two 42384 MIZ mini pendants are used over the stovetop island area.

Installation employs one Design Pro LED Disc under each cabinet placed close to wall surface to accentuate an array patternon the tile surface. Two are mounted close to the front edge to provide functional task light for the countertop. Two Design ProLED Discs are inside each cabinet. 18' of Design Pro LED Linear wraps the island toekick, 8'-6" lights the toekick at the rearof the room and 12' illuminates the toekick along the side. Kichler island light, 66051 is placed in the center of the room andthe 65337 is positioned over the table to the side.

Dimming CompatibilityAdding a dimmer switch to Design Pro LED Direct Wire 120V lighting createsthe utmost in accent lighting control. Consider these tips when choosingand installing dimming switches:

U A dimmer consumes some of the power that goes to the lighting xture. The initiallumen output (or overall brightness) of the light source will be decreased whencompared to a simple, two-pole, on-off switch.

U Kichler has tested all of our LED xtures against a variety of popular and readilyavailable dimmer switches to assure that lumen output and dimmer controlare maximized. Weve created dimmer-compatible LED xtures that will givehomeowners a full range of dimming capability.

U Most dimmers will not dim down to zero. Expect a dimming range from75% to 95%.

U Different type dimmer switches will deliver different results:

Dimmer switch type What to expect

Standard triac Will reduce initial lumen output from 94% to 76%

Rotary Will dim 100% to black

Electric low voltage Will create a smaller dim range, typically from 80% to 62%

designed literally from the ground up.

We took the LED light source and engineered

a step light around it, for maximum lumen

output and a clear, gentle ow of light. Plus,

the system is easy to install, thanks to push-in

wire connectors that can accommodate daisy

chained wiring for added simplicity. Available

with dimmable capabilities to customize the

light to the occasion. See page 15 for guidance

on dimming compatibility.
