After Five for MNT
Our Kiwanis community knows we have a commitment to our UNICEF part-
ner to raise $110 million dollars to eliminate Maternal Neonatal Tetanus.Does the rest of your community know that?
Our Kiwanis Club in Owen Sound felt that key members of our city might bevery interested in finding out about our worthwhile project. We decided tohold an after five social information meeting. We rented out a beautiful reception space at the local Best Western overlook-ing our bay so there was no decorating required. As we were holding a char-ity event, the hotel rented out their space at a reduced rate. We deliberatelykept the ticket to the event to $20.00 with the promise of fabulous appetizersand an informative speaker, then International Trustee Dr. John Button. All
food and room expenses were more than covered by the tickets sold.
Rather than spending money on advertising, a few club members invitedstrategic guests for a five to seven o’clock after work event to learn about our
initiative. Of our 90 guests, 70 were non-Kiwanians. A few members of our club donated some terrific draw prizes for the raffle tickets sold at the event. After more than an hour of socializing around the cash bar, we had somechairs set up at the end of the room so those who needed to, could sit down and listen to Dr. John speak pas-sionately about our global project. Those present understood that they had been invited to participate in aworld changing endeavour.
After the event, the comments from those in attendance were that they appreciated the time frame. They could just pop in after work for a relaxed time. We were all done by 7 p.m. as promised. They also commented thatthey appreciated the diverse and ample flow of appetizers served by staff continuously circulating about theroom. After work, they were in need of, not just food for thought, but sustenance to keep them on their feet.Good food + Good conversation + Great information = Success!
Our goal was primarily to raise awareness and perhaps a thousand dollars from the event. In the end, betweenthe raffle tickets and individuals donations by those present, the club raised $5000.00 which was a great startto our commitment. We have since pledged ourselves to be a Model Club with a total commitment of $45,000.
The success of our endeavour was in personally asking individuals that have shown a commitment to our com-
munity through the years. Whether medical, legal, business or governmental members of your community, en-gage them in your MNT efforts.
