Hmmm, well it did mine. In the movie, (which came out in the 70’s) a Black slave had been stolen from Africa and brought to this country. This was a ship ride that only the strong survived. The other strong ones weren’t so lucky, they got dumped alive into the deep blue sea. Many slave ships would get over loaded with too much cargo and Black humans. Now which should we throw over board?....oops ..there go the humans. After arriving, he (the

Did “Roots” Impact Your Life?slave) did not have the free-dom to move about as he pleased (Those chains kinda slowed his steps down). Ya’ll, I’m trying to be as kind and gentle with this story as I can be, cause I don’t want to be called a racist - I’m just stating facts. The woman that he was assigned to make a family with gave birth to a son. Well the slave did the only thing his African culture had taught him to do which was ....when a child is born, it belongs to God, so he held the newborn baby up to the sky and gave the child back to God to use according to His Will. Way back around 1984, I was praying for God to give me a child. I had fasted and prayed and noth-ing happened. Then one day a woman knocked on my door. A woman that I could not stand. She lived next door to me and was married to my husband’s brother. She and I did not get along cause I

felt she allowed our mother-in- law to run her life and I was not going to allow anyone to belittle me or pick my friends or make me sit up under them day or night. Nah! Never. Accept me, and love me, for who I am, and stop trying to tell me that cause of the family we’ve married into, that makes me better than other people....shucks, I kept trying to explain to her that their theory could not be true cause..... if you look into the dictionary for the word dysfunctional and you’ll find a picture of the “family”. But she just had pos-sessed a humble spirit and allowed them to place a har-ness around her neck and dragged her where ever they wanted. So, needless to say, I opened the door with an attitude. She was nine months pregnant (again) and just as sweetly as she could, she nervously asked me a ques-tion that made me almost faint. Mind you, I had not invited her into the house yet. Why? Cause I was just mean like that. She looked nervous as she said to me....”’Theresa, when my baby is born and I have to go back to work ...will you baby sit for me?’” Ya’ll, I was floored. I asked, “Me ...with a baby?” She said yes. So, I said ...come on inside ...sit down. LOLOL And one month later, I

My husband is a sports addict! Dear Gwendolyn: I have been married for two years. When dating, my husband and I were always going on trips, movies, and the finest of restaurants. How can I get him to do these things again? I gave a super bowl party and told him to invite some of his friends. He invited ladies from his job who came wearing tight jeans, short skirts, and see-through blouses. We had a big argument because only one male came. I had wanted my marriage to be exciting but it is turning out to be everything except joy. Gwendolyn, he is such a changed man. Sometimes I wish I had stayed single. Not a bad life…you know? Ruby

Dear Ruby: It is said that the man you date is not the man you marry. I am sure that saying does not apply to all married men. There are many men who keep the excitement going. You must admit, however, there are some women who wear the hat of not being exciting. In fact, women are known to turn their attention away from their marriage. Good you are not in that category. With you, your marriage is a dream world and there is nothing wrong with that. I suggest you have a talk with your husband. I’m sure you have talked with him many times before. But, have that talk again. I also suggest that you do not start a family. I say this because your marriage may not survive. If you have to return to single life, at least you know that being single is not a bad life. More women need to realize that. It’s sad that women dream of getting married and then dream --- of getting out.

New York, NY) – Recently, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit upheld the constitution-ality of the admissions program utilized by the Uni-versity of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) to assemble a diverse student body. Fisher v. Texas is the first fed-eral appellate challenge to the use of race in univer-sity admissions since the Supreme Court’s landmark 2003 decision in Grutter v. Bollinger. The Fifth Cir-cuit’s unanimous decision affirms that UT Austin’s admissions plan is entirely consistent with Grutter. In an opinion authored by Judge Patrick Higginbo-tham (PDF), the Fifth Circuit recognized “[t]he need for a state’s leading educational institution to foster civic engagement and maintain visibly open paths to leadership.” The opinion further emphasized that “[c]ultivating paths to leadership for underrepresented groups serves both the individual and the public, sus-taining an infrastructure of leaders in an increasingly pluralistic society.” “Our nation’s future depends on students being exposed to diversity in their formative educational experiences,” said John Payton, President and Direc-tor-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Edu-cational Fund, Inc. (LDF). “Nowhere is diversity more important than at the flagship public university in the increasingly diverse state of Texas.” This lawsuit was launched in 2008 by two White students who were denied entry to UT Austin. Most students are admitted to UT Austin under the Top Ten Percent Plan, which guarantees admission to all Texas students in the top ten percent of their high school class. The remaining students are admitted under a holistic admissions process that considers race as one

of many factors in a student’s application file. During oral argument before the Fifth Circuit and in a friend-of-the-court brief filed on behalf of the Black Student Alliance at UT Austin, LDF empha-sized the isolation experienced by the small numbers of African-American students who enrolled at UT Austin in the eight-year period before it reinstituted race as a factor in admissions for the 2005 entering class. By themselves, the Top Ten Percent Plan and other race-neutral efforts that the University pursued were insufficient to achieve a critical mass of African-American students and other students of color. As a consequence, LDF argued that all students were deprived of the educational benefits of diversity. It was for this reason, that UT Austin decided, after careful evaluation, to institute the limited race-con-scious admissions process, which the Fifth Circuit panel unanimously agreed is a lawful application of Grutter. “Today’s ruling affirms that universities have wide latitude to seek diversity in their student bodies,” said LDF Assistant Counsel Joshua Civin, who presented oral argument in the Fifth Circuit on behalf of LDF and the Black Student Alliance. The law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski LLP is co-counsel with LDF in this case. Also supporting UT Austin’s position in this case were the United States, the American Council of Education and other higher education organizations, and numerous civil rights groups including the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the Asian Pacific American Legal Center, and the Asian American Jus-tice Center.

Are You Ready? My husband and I have been married for many years. We have a very happy loving relationship and enjoy spending time together. Whether we’re taking a walk, watching his favorite DIY show, preparing a meal, or going for a ride, we love and value our time together. We’re generally on the same page concerning most things in our marriage, especially those things of importance. However, sometimes when we plan to go out together that is when I know for sure that my husband is from another planet! Because this is when he becomes Mr. Speedy! As I’m staring blankly into my closet trying to decide “what on earth to wear”, my husband appears to move with lightening - like speed. He is dressed and ready to go in about 10 minutes flat! This includes showering, shaving, dressing and trimming his fingernails! Inevitable it is at this time when my husband will ask me his favorite question, “Trisha, are you ready?” Consequently, my reply is generally, “give me a few minutes!” The word “ready” is defined as prepared, in order, prompt, willing, inclined, at hand or opportune. Some adjectives that define ready includes responsive, alert and speedy. Needless to say, my husband fits these attributes when it comes to preparing to go some place. I on the other hand could use some improvement in this area. In life we learn to prepare to be ready for many things. Mothers prepare to be ready for the birth of their babies. People typically prepare for seasonal changes in order to be ready for changes in weather from hot to cold etc. Farmers must prepare to grow enough food in order to be ready to feed people. Manufacturers prepare by producing a sufficient amount of products in order to be ready to meet the needs of customers. Nations prepare their military in order to be ready to defend their country. So, as you can see, being ready is important. God’s Divine Plan provides that we “be ready” for the second coming of Christ. Scripture reminds us that the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief (2 Peter 3:10). Do not be deceived! The Lord will keep his promise. How do we know? Isaiah 60:22b states “I am the Lord; in its time I will do this swiftly.” “The Lord isn’t being slow about his promise to return, as some people think.” “No, he is being patient for your sake.” “He does not want anyone to perish, so he is giving everyone a chance to repent.” “The Lord is waiting so that people have time to be saved”, (2 Peter 3:9, 15). Finally, “Are you ready for Christ’ return?” Remember, when he comes there will not be time to say “give me a few minutes!”

The Summer Getaway Guide: Packing Essentials

By Erin McCurdy

Most of us look for-ward to summer season. For me, three thoughts automatically come to mind: beautiful warm weather, open - toed shoes and most impor-tantly, taking a vacation! A time of relaxation, reju-venation and letting go of your usual routine of work or school. This is the trip you have waited for all year to get away with girlfriends or family. For many women, the most exciting part of planning your getaway is deciding what outfits to bring. After all, it gives us a legitimate excuse to go shopping for vacation clothes and accessories. While there are so many things you may feel that you cannot leave without, one issue to take into consideration is your luggage. Depending on whether it’s a road trip or flying, deciding what luggage to take can make a difference. Whether

it’s a carry on or check-in bag, every little bit of space counts. The impor-tant thing to remember is focus on your essentials. Packing the essentials may seem discouraging at first as if your options are limited, but the truth is you can still look fabu-lous if you know what to do. There are several tips that can make pack-ing a little easier. The first tip is to plan what you will actually need for your destination. Look-ing at your itinerary, what are the activities like, what types of shoes can I wear, what will the weather be like? Now, you are ready to select your attire. Just keep in mind one word - VERSATILITY. Find pieces that can be mixed and matched in several ways. Packing a higher ratio of tops to bottoms will give you more options, so bring several tops that can mix and match with shorts, capri’s or denim. Dresses are a must have for your get-away. Since they’re only one piece they also save space! Next, try on all of your outfits from head to toe - including shoes and accessories. This makes it easier to visualize what will actually be worn and what may just stay in your

suitcase taking up valu-able space. After seeing your outfits on, find the flip flops, wedge sandals and/or heels that can be the most versatile. Remember, two basic colors of heels that always compliment mul-tiple pieces are black and neutral. With jew-elry, statement pieces that are available in necklaces, beads and gold or silver bangles are always a great choice to accessorize with sun dresses, shorts and numerous tops. With handbags, bring one versatile bag that can match everything and a clutch that can glam up your look for day or night. A clutch is an ideal space saver and colors such as bronze, pewter, silver or gold adds a spicy accent to numerous

pieces. Lastly, the final must have is a fitted black or white blazer to complete your travel attire. Perfect to wear with jeans, dresses or just about anything, not only are fitted blazers chic, timeless, and more stylish than sweaters or jackets, but they are perfect for those unexpected cool summer nights. Now you are ready to grab your sunscreen, sunglasses and begin your summer getaway! As you prepare, just keep these tips in mind making your packing experience as simple and stress free as possible. Remember you don’t have to sacri-fice looking fabulous!

Hattie Kelly, publisher of Power Pages News and President of the Texas Publishers Associ-ation (TPA).

DALLAS- Hattie Kelly, publisher of Power Pages News, the newspaper that gives "God the Glory", and current President of the Texas Publishers Association, is the recipi-ent of the Dallas Fannie Lou Hamer Award. For more than half of Fannie Lou Ham-er’s life (born October 6, 1917), this rural agricul-tural worker saw no end

to the cycle of poverty and humiliation that was the plight of most south-ern African Americans. Fannie Hamer was the last of twenty children born to Jim and Ella Townsend. Hamer in Montgomery County, Mississippi, is credited for the quote: “ I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.” Hattie Kelly, much like Fannie Lou Hamer, has had a life that defies much of what should have been accomplished by one woman from the south. Minister Hattie Kelly was born and raised in Jose-phine, Texas. She is the

daughter of Isaiah and Luverter Clark and the thirteenth child of fifteen siblings. At the age of six, she began picking cotton to help the family. She said, “By the time I was thirteen I was pick-ing two and three hundred pounds.” At the tender age of fifteen she found herself married, and by the time she was twenty years old she found her-self the mother of five children. Even though she did not obtain a formal education, she became a dynamic speaker and civil

rights worker. Mrs. Kelly is the current President of the Texas Publishers Associ-ation, which consists of 28 newspapers across the State of Texas. In honoring Mrs. Kelly this month, Betty Veasy, President of National Hook-up of Black Women North Central Texas, says, “Like Fannie Lou Hamer, Minister Hattie Kelly is our ‘Shero,’ serving the community with a spirit of grace and dignity.” The award was presented to Kelly during a morn-ing luncheon at the Hilton Garden Inn in Allen, Texas. The Fannie Lou Hamer Award is given by the National Hook-up of Black Women North Central Texas National (NHBW, Inc.)

Jolla Says Good-ByeTheresa ThrashEDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Reverend Michael J., Jolla of St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville is moving on. Many spiritual leaders have adorned this great city with much acco-lades attached to their titles, some more, some less than Reverend Jolla. Never has a such a great spiritual leader been sent to this City of Greenville that has possessed the talents to draw and keep the love of a whole community. When the news went out to the community that Pastor Jolla had received a higher calling from God to continue

on up the ladder carrying God’s sword....tears were seri-ously, shed all over town. This is why. You see, Rever-end Jolla treated this commu-nity as an anointed Sheppard concerned with God’s flock. Not just the Baptist, Method-ist, Catholic, or Holiness rep-resentative, but to God’s flock at as a whole. It was nothing to see Reverend Jolla go out of his way to hospi-tals and nursing homes to show love as he visited sheep from flocks other than his. Travel miles to Cancer Centers to pray healing and demand that Satan take his hands off of one of God’s sheep -even though the sick did not always belong to his church.

When there were the needy in the community, it did not matter what church they were members of....he would go into his pocket and send money to the families. He became to Greenville “the Community Minister.” In fact, the City of Greenville admired his dedication and work to all its citizens that in 2001, Reverend Jolla was the first and last black man to ever be presented the Key to the City of Greenville, Texas. Very few ministers through-out this country cans attest to being a recipient of such an honor. Since 1996, Reverend Jolla has made an impact that will be hard to say good-bye to, he’s well loved by

the masses of people. How-ever, God asks us to “study to show yourself approved rightly dividing the word of

God.” He has been obedient and studied well. God has been faithful to give Rev-erend Jolla and his family

favor in this city. Now it’s time for us to accept God at His word.

Spiritual Encouragement

Be Safe This Memorial Day We are currently approaching a Memorial Day and we will be in remembrance of our family and friends; some will remember their loved ones with joy and others with grief. There will be a time of reflection for many that are serving in the military along side many military families. I would like to bring something to your remem-brance from the Word of God. “But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are sleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are a sleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” (1 Thess 4:13-18) Be encourage this Memorial Day and remember that time is a wonderful healer. For truly our father in heaven always has a word for us in the Bible. “Neither can they die any more: even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord, The God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.” (Luke 20:36-38) Have a safe Memorial Day. Be Blessed!

received my baby when she was 4 weeks old. Well, I helped raise her till she was 19, then I left the state of Texas and came back 7 years later. My little baby I helped raise was now avoiding me. Folks kept hinting that something was wrong. Well, I just knew they were crazy cause, all I knew was that my baby was beautiful, she had won many beauty pag-eants and had the trophy’s and crowns to prove it, my baby had years of piano les-sons and could not only play the piano but read music too, my baby could sing like a bird. When I had received her at 4 weeks old, I did like that old slave did. I had stepped outside with a naked baby and, I had held my baby up to the sky and told God that she belongs to him. I had anointed her mouth, hands and head with prayer oil and told God please use her to sing, play the piano and have

a mind to serve Him. Today, 27 years later, I talk to her by phone, but she won’t ever come to see me. Last night I went to her Facebook page in the com-puter and saw a recent pic-ture of her. I started to cry. She looked like a skeleton. The rumors were true. I’m calling out for every Saint of God to come for-ward and call her name (Theresa’s niece) before the throne of God. I need the warriors of Jesus to step in with me… we gonna march right into the devils camp and take back what he’s stolen from me. The devil is a liar, and the truth is not in him and he’s got to give up what belongs to God. I pray that God will straighten her up and use her but if he needs to take her, then my prayer is for her soul to be saved. Please saints, pray for my baby.

Guess Who Came To Town? When a babe grows up, we must allow that babe to grow and be all it can be. We came together ear-

Jolla lier this week at St. John’s Missionary Church to say goodbye......this was good thing. It was ok to shed tears, for we were not losing Reverend Jolla, but celebrat-ing the has a charge to keep. He’s got to be obedient to our Father as he hears our

Father say... “’Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your mas-ter’s happiness!”
