“ PANORAMA “ 2013 - Review
Dance is a family affair for Durham trio
Three generation of women from a Durham family are lacing up their
dancing shoes to perform together at a North East festival of dance this
month.
Grandmother Margaret Johnson, 72, daughter Denise Durkin, 52, and
grand-daughter Nicola Pilmoor, 26, are all members of the Durham branch
of KFA (Keep Fit Association) Moves North East. Despite 46 years
separating Margaret and grand-daughter Nicola they have danced
alongside each other for over a decade in competition and at weekly
rehearsals held at Belmont Comprehensive School.
They will take to the floor together at the annual North East Panorama festival of movement and dance in
Darlington on May 18.
Margaret, from Bishop Middleham, first joined Durham KFA in 1975 and inspired Denise, from Spennymoor, and
Nicola, from Bishop Auckland, to follow in her dance steps. “I’ve always loved music and dancing but since I joined
the KFA I’ve travelled all over the country and made lots of lovely friends. I’ve always said even if you chopped my
legs off I’d still manage to go to class somehow,” said Margaret.
Passing on a love of dance
Both Denise and Nicola have also trained as dance teachers. Denise has choreographed routines for Panorama
and Nicola is about to take on a national leadership role with Youth Moves, a project aimed at making dance more
accessible to young people. The three women dance every week with the Durham group whose youngest
member is five years old and the oldest aged 84. The group offers dance classes for adults, young people, mature
and older movers and seated exercise classes for people with mobility limitations or disabilities.
Lynne Casey, chair of KFA Moves North East, said: “It’s an amazing achievement to have three generations of one
family dancing together and it just shows that exercise, friendship, enthusiasm and motivation really does lead to a
long and happy life. KFA Moves is not somewhere you go just to sweat and burn off calories, it’s like an extended
family of women who love dance and express themselves through movement.”

North East Region
We had a fantastic day that showcased a wide variety of movement, exercise and dance from
Branches, North East Teams, Youth Moves Teams, and our worthy successful dancers at this
year’s KFA Championships.
We also had very good coverage in the Press this year. Matthew Moore, from Honeypot Media,
sent out a Press Release based on three generations of participants (Margaret Johnson, Denise
Durkin and Nicola Pilmoor, all from Durham Branch) and sent it out to relevant media. The article
appeared in the Press all over the region, and Nicola spoke about Panorama on BBC Radio Tees
on the morning of Panorama Day. The Northern Echo printed the article, but also sent a reporter
to cover the event on the day, and there were photos and a write up on the following Monday.
Matthew also sent his article (some of which you can read below) to Dancing Times and Dance
Today, as well as Woman's Own magazine and The Lady. This was excellent coverage for not
only the event but our organisation as a whole.
Group and Action Photos, taken by Alan Brown at Panorama, can be
viewed and ordered at £1 each – see your Team Producer for details

Panorama – Another fantastic day. Youth Moves and Young Adults did us proud once
again!! They all performed wonderfully. Lots of variety and creativity on show. All worked so
hard at rehearsals leading up to the show, and it certainly paid off. Thank you to all performers
for your commitment and efforts. A huge Thank You to Chaperones, as, without you, the teams
could not perform!! Finally, to Youth Moves Teachers Christine, Linda, Judith and Janet, Well
Done and Thank You so much for another successful year!!
Lumley Junior School - Janet Balfour will start a new After School Class at Lumley
Junior School, Chester le Street, from June 4th, with years 3/4/5/6. The school’s Creative Arts
teacher has also asked for one hour of National Curriculum Dance per week with years 5/6.
The course delivered by Lou Devine and Bobby Gargrave for Youth Moves Teachers has made
this possible. Lumley School were very impressed with Youth Moves literature and DVDs of our
past shows.
Senior Youth Moves – Three of the girls have passed the first Audition at Dance City,
and have been asked to attend a second Audition! Well done and Good Luck to the girls – a
great experience for them!
Young Adults – Christine Chapman and two members of Northern Lights attended the
Chester le Street Summer Area Action Partnership (AAP) Forum on Monday 24 th June to
receive an award for putting Chester le Street on the map through Dance. This came about
from their winning performance at the KFA Championships in Southport. Well Done to Christine
and Northern Lights!
Northern Lights have also been invited to perform at the KFA National AGM on 5 th October !
Extravaganza !!!
The Youth Moves Extravaganza will be held on Sunday 17th November at
the Lancastrian Suite, Dunstan. All Youth Moves Key Stages will be performing.
So put it in your diary as a show not to be missed!
Teacher’s Forum
We are holding a Teacher’s Forum at Gilesgate School on Saturday 17 August from 9.30 to
12.30. It is also open to Branch PR Reps who are not teachers.
This is an important new event and will be a forum to share new information that you need
to know as teachers and also give you a chance to give feedback and ask questions. Light
refreshments will be available and the topics will include:
