A Word from the PresidentHello Friends!

We are pleased to bring you the 2018 Spring Issue of the Keystone Quarterly! We trust that you’ve had a safe winter. Depending on where you live, the weather sure has been extreme, with one snow storm after another. I’m sure we’ll see more of that, but at least we are at the tail end of this cold season, with nicer weather on the way. Having mentioned that, don’t forget to check the websites and Facebook pages for your favorite southern gospel groups and concerts. It’s that time of year again!

We have dedicated this issue to our 2017 Keystone Award Winners and Hall of Fame Inductees. Many of you attended the 2017 PSGMA Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and we sure appreciate your continued support of this event. Congratulations to New Journey, the 2017 PSGMA Keystone Award winners! Also, welcome Boyd Shaw, Edd Nickle and Gary Eckman, our 2017 Hall of Fame Inductees. Check out the enclosed AD for the upcoming 2018 Hall of Fame Induction Banquet for the location and ticket information.

We want to thank you for your continued support of the PSGMA. If you are interested in becoming an annual or lifetime member, see details on the back cover!

We hope to see you soon!

Putting Forth The Word of God in Music

On The Narrow Roadwith Uncle Brian Rosenbaum

I love the Pennsylvania Southern Gospel Music Association! I'm so glad that it was started so many years ago now. Why? Because of the blessing that it is to me, as well as the blessing that I've been able to be to others through it.

That brings me to the point of the article this time... supporting the PSGMA. In Ephesians chapter

2, God tells us that we are a building "fitfully framed together", growing into a "Holy Temple". TOGETHER... what a great word. It means 'to gather', giving the idea of separate pieces being pulled from different places to make one great something.

In southern gospel music, it's important to support each other. It's important to encourage each other. It's important to build each other up in the faith. That's exactly what PSGMA does! That's what it strives for and THAT'S why we need to

support it…support it by becoming members, support it by joining the Facebook page and seeing the different posts, support it by encouraging those that have concerts coming up by praying for them, by attending the concerts and by financially supporting them. We all know that finances are important for the ongoing work of ministry. If we believe in the work of the Pennsylvania Southern Gospel Music Association, why not get involved? Even (dare l say it?) support it financially. It is an organization WORTHY of your support!

What a thrill it was to be at the PSGMA banquet at the end of last year! I saw so many folks and enjoyed hearing southern gospel music with them. I would encourage you to get behind this great organization and use it to fulfill the task that God has prepared each one of us to do…That task? To quote Philippians chapter 1: that we may "stand fast in one spirit with one mind, striving together for the faith of the Gospel" and "esteeming others higher than ourselves". May God bless you as you apply these verses as you press on towards the mark of God's High Calling!

New Journey is a very passionate singing ministry with a desire to be a vessel in which God can extend His love, healing, restoration and salvation through song and testimony. The individual members of New Journey have been ministering the gospel in song for over 30 years. They have seen many souls come to know the Lord as their personal savior and are quick to let you know, it’s not by them, but the drawing power of the Holy Spirit at work in their lives. John 12:32 says “If I (God) be lifted up from the earth, I will draw all men unto me”.

The group is comprised of: Kelli Moore, Melissa 'Missie' Tressler, and Michelle Tantlinger. As teens, Kelli sang as a soloist, while Melissa and Michelle sang with their family group, The Gospel Rays. There were moments when all three gals were at the same venue and would get to sing a few songs together. They enjoyed having the chance to be together on stage, but knew that God had different plans for their lives at that time. Kelli was meant to stay in her solo ministry, while Melissa and Michelle were to continue traveling and singing with their family group.

Later on, Kelli sang with a professional

national gospel group named Lordsong, and enjoyed life on the road along with success in the professional realm of gospel music. A highlight for Kelli was when Lordsong was nominated for a Dove award in 2002! In fact, they were honored to sing in the pre-show of the award ceremony. However, Kelli felt as though God was calling her to come home to Hollidaysburg, PA, where she married, and she and her husband became involved in the music ministry at their home church. Just

like Kelli, in addition to singing with their family group, Melissa and Michelle also got involved with their home churches and kept busy doing different types of ministry for God during the years where they were not traveling and

singing. In early November, at the 2017 PSGMA

Hall of Fame Induction Banquet, New Journey received the 2017 PSGMA Keystone Award. Their passion for spreading God's word is evident in their commitment and ministry.

Each individual member of New Journey prayed for a new opportunity to serve, and as a group, they have decided to step out in faith

and follow the Lord's leading as He directs them in this new area of ministry. These three talented individuals have joined together to begin a “New Journey”, serving the Lord through song, and they are excited for the opportunity to minister together to see hearts encouraged and souls saved.

The Pennsylvania Southern Gospel Music Association held their 2017 Hall of Fame Inductee Banquet on Nov. 4, 2017, at the Christian Life

Assembly Church in Camp Hill, PA. Paul Heil was master of ceremonies and he did an excellent job. Fun and inspiring performances by Three Bridges and New Journey set the tone for the evening. In fact, the 2017 Keystone Award was given to New Journey, a ministry showing great growth, both from a vocal standpoint and in all aspects of their ministry, including taking a spiritual

stand for reaching more souls for Christ. As they do each year, the PSGMA inducted three

more individuals into the Pennsylvania Gospel Music Hall of Fame. The first of those individuals was Gary Eckman. Gary’s first memory of Gospel music was from Sunday School, singing from the “little red hymnal” with songs such as “How Great Thou Art,” “More About Jesus,” and others. His mother was church organist, so she played often and the family would gather around to sing. Gary then sang with The Gabriels across the last 47 years, and enjoyed finding the different harmonies in the music. Gary continues his involvement in music ministry in 2018, singing in concert appearances with The Gabriels, as well as with Eastern Gate.

The second individual to be inducted also spent many years singing with The Gabriels. Edd Nickle learned to enjoy music at the church his family attended, as well as listening to WWVA radio as

the station played Country and Gospel music. An influential moment for Edd was hearing James Blackwood singing “How Great Thou Art” at a Harrisburg concert. Edd is especially known for his rendition of a recitation called “The Apple Tree Song.” Since 1969, Edd has sung with The Cornerstone Quartet, Jordan Valley Quartet, The Good Shepherd Singers and

the Gabriels. Today, Edd is still actively singing with The Gabriels.

The third 2017 inductee is Boyd Shaw. Boyd was raised in a “preacher’s home” and recalls the early years singing with his Aunt in church. He went on to sing with The Vicksburg Quartet and then formed his own group, The Masters, with whom he sang from

1971 until 1997. Boyd shared that he has recorded 13 albums, experienced only one group personnel change in 25 years, and has enjoyed watching his daughter Kelli Shaw (of the New Journey Trio) evolve into a talented singer. Most of all, he’s humbled to know that he’s helped to lead hundreds to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, three of whom became pastors.

Hold On To KindnessDuane Nicholson

As I sit on the plane, I talk with an autistic little girl who has braces on both of her legs. Yet, she kept saying hello to me and telling her mom that I was her Spanish teacher, Ms. Cindy, from somewhere near here in Detroit. She introduced me several times to her bear that was named Kindness. I couldn’t help but notice how kind the mother was to her daughter. She redirected her several times, kept telling her to keep her voice down, and held her hand on take-off & landing. Once we reached the gate, her mother quickly grabbed their things and tried to get her to the front. However, they only got a few rows forward. Everyone could hear the mother say “Hold on to Kindness. Hold on to Kindness.” And would help the girl hug the bear. Naturally, my tender heart wanted to cry out to everyone on the plane... ”Did you hear what she said? Hold on to Kindness!” I thought, how appropriate.

There may have been some annoyed by the little girl talking the whole flight or some may have been shy when the girl wanted to hug them or high-5 them. Even the gate operator named Rebekah in State College, PA got a hug and then a small kiss on the arm from this little girl. Yet the joy of this little girl made me think of our world and how we all just “NEED TO HOLD ON TO KINDNESS!”

I talked with the mom coming up the ramp off the plane and told her what a great job she’s doing with her daughter. She made several remarks and I told her I knew it had to be tiring, but thanked her for being consistent (the teacher part of me came out). She then told me the little girl was going to have surgery on her legs to correct them. But then she told me how she (the mom) is battling brain cancer and how exhausting her treatments are. My heart sank. I assured her that she would be in my continual thoughts and prayers and how she and her daughter taught everyone a lesson today…“Hold on to Kindness…you never know what another person is going through.”

The theme of this story is what I believe should be our aim for this New Year of 2018: HOLD ON TO KINDNESS. The Bible holds many references to kindness and how important it is. Ephesians 4:32, ‘Be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you’. This is just one of at least 100 references in scripture on this subject! I find that even a smile can make a difference. I found this to be true not long ago. I may have written this in a previous article, but it bears repeating:

I was in our local supermarket. I came to the end of an aisle and met a young mother, who had a child who was just screaming loudly. The lady looked at me kind of embarrassed, but I just smiled at her and continued my shopping. Just before heading to the checkout lane, I met this same young mother again and she stopped me. She said, "Excuse me, but I just wanted to thank you for smiling at me when my son was having a tantrum a while ago. Just before you smiled at me, an irate lady unkindly told me that she did not come to shop, only to have a child screaming and upset her! It has been a hard day, but your smile made a difference…”

We live in a hectic, sometimes unkind world and I have been guilty of not always showing kindness, and I know things can try our patience many times; but true stories like I have related can help us to live the theme of HOLDING ON TO KINDNESS. Have a KIND YEAR!!
