Thank you for choosing the Key to Greenville Guide as your Upstate directory. Key to Greenville Guide is a locally, family owned publication which highlights the entire Upstate area of South Carolina including Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson and all of the small communities in between that lend the Upstate so much charm and character. This guide can only be published thanks to the support of our advertisers. We hope that you will support them in return.

The Upstate grows exponentially every year and tourism is just one area where that growth is sustained. Whether here for

business, a family vacation, or you are a life-long resident, we promise you there is at least one festival, shop, restaurant, activity or park within 30 miles that you don’t know about. Our mission is to find and highlight those gems of the Upstate. That is why we call ourselves the “Key” to Greenville. We unlock all of that potential that you are missing out on!

Welcome!

The Key To Greenville Guide, produced by R. A. Lewis, is published four times a year and is distributed free of charge at various locations throughout Greenville and the South Carolina Upstate, including visitors centers, hotels, motels, restaurants, rental companies, real estate companies, grocery stores, advertisers’ locations and many other high-traffic areas in Greenville and its environs. The concept, design and contents of The Key To Greenville Guide are copyrighted (application made) and may not be reproduced. The copy and advertising deadline is June 5, 2010, for the Summer/Fall 2010 issue.

Featured on our cover, Campbell’s Covered Bridge was built in 1909. It remains the only covered bridge in South Carolina. Charles Irwin Willis erected the 38-foot long, 12-foot wide pine structure across the Beaverdam Creek on Pleasant Hill road.

Locals believe that the bridge was named for Lafayette Campbell, who at the time that the bridge was built owned 194 acres near the bridge. In 1966 major restoration work was completed on the bridge.

Downtown Greer, known locally as Greer Station, has become a destination in itself with approximately 12 square blocks of retail, dining, entertainment, and professional service

Pendelton arts district

A Community for ArtistsGreenville has its own little Soho burgeoning within its borders. The Pendleton Street Arts District, located just outside of Greenville’s downtown, is home to more than 30 artists of varying mediums, including painters, sculptors, potters, jewelers and photographers. The Village of West Greenville, which spans approximately four blocks on Pendleton Street and is located a half mile west of Academy Street, has been transformed from a group of abandoned buildings into an emerging arts district.

Tricia Earle works out of Gallery 1279, at 1279 Pendleton Street,

along with other area artists. She began renting her space four years ago, but has seen a big difference as the time has passed.

“When I rented my studio, Pendleton Street was not even an art district yet,” Earle said. But, even then, she could see the direction in which the area was moving. “I felt like it was going to be a core for the art industry.”

And today, it is. The Pendleton Street Arts District transforms from a quiet mill village where artists work diligently in their studios into a bustling arena,

filled with artists and art-enthusiasts when an art-related event is scheduled. The First Fridays program opens the studios to the public on the first Friday of each month from 6 to 9 PM. Most artists in the area participate in First Fridays and may provide light refreshments and a chance to learn more about themselves or their art, as people enjoy the artwork and make purchases. Just five years ago, First Fridays was a new program with a handful of artists reaching out to the community. Now, around 200 people visit the over 25 studios and galleries that participate. The mission of the event is to provide a showcase for both up-

and-coming and established artists in the Greenville area.“First Fridays are a fun, inexpensive activity for people to take part in,” said Jennie Waller, a Greenville resident who has attended the event in the past. “When people are looking for something fun to do on the weekend, visiting the local art studios is a great option. It also gives you the opportunity to see what the local artists are working on.”

Another annual event for the artists is Greenville Open Studios. This event takes place each fall, and is scheduled for November 6-7, 2010. Greenville Open Studios began nine years ago when a group of local artists decided to raise awareness of

the artistic talent in the area. This is another event where the artists open their workspaces and show their artwork to the public. The objective of this event is to reach all types of art-lovers, from a serious collector to someone who just stops in to take a curious peek.

There are other events throughout the year, such as exhibits and shows or educational day camps for children. Check with your favorite studio to find out what events they have

planned for the year.

Earle, whose primary medium is oil and acrylic painting, has enjoyed watching the area change over the years. “Greenville has really been such an exciting place,” she said. “It’s going to continue to grow.”

Most studios are open to the public on First Fridays or by appointment. Contact the individual studios to inquire about the best time to visit and view art.

The PeachoidDriving down I-85 in Cherokee county, there is one landmark you can not miss. This is no mirage, it is real, and it is a water tower!

The Giant Peach (referred to by knowledgeable locals as “the Peachoid water tank”) is located in Gaffney on Interstate 85 near the exit for S.C. Hwy. 11 (the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway) .

It was built by the Board of Public Works In Gaffney, S.C. in 1981. It took them five months to design and mold the steel for the project. 10 million pounds of concrete 1.5 miles of welds were used! The stem on the top is 12 feet long and 18 inches in diameter. An even larger leaf, 60 feet long, 16 feet wide, and weighing 7 tons, seen in the photo at left, was attached to one side.

According to official literature, the Peachoid boldly “sets the record straight about which state is the biggest peach producer in the South.
