Key Dates Dear parents, It has been another very busy week at Ark Burlington Danes Academy. There has been a lot of wonderful learning taking place and the children have seled back into rounes that will enable them to be successful. It has been a real privilege to visit classrooms this week to observe lessons and get to see first-hand the progress the children are making. I will connue to visit classrooms next week and look forward to working with all children, from Nursery up to Year 1. This Friday marked the first of our class assemblies of the summer term, which was led by Donaldson class on the theme of independence. The children presented with confidence and eloquence and truly demonstrated our BDA values. My thanks go to Miss Meade and Miss Alcobia for their work to prepare this assembly. Next weeks assembly will be presented by Pullman class on the theme of helpfulness. I look forward to seeing parents there. This week we also welcomed the sports coach from Queens Park Rangers who worked with Recepon and Year 1 classes and the children thoroughly enjoyed the sessions. We also had our first leng of the school hall to celebrate a birthday. If you are interested in leng out our space, please do contact Mr Currie who can give you further informaon. Finally, Miss Marn was very excited when she shared with staff that Ark Burlington Danes pupils achieved some of the best phonics scores of all pupils in Ark schools. Overall, Ark BDA Primary came second place in the network in last assessment round. This success is due to the hard work of our children and dedicaon of all the staff at the school and for which I am very grateful. Many congratulaons to all on this achievement. Miss Marn and the team now have their sights firmly on first place! I hope that you have a resul long weekend; enjoy bank holiday Monday and we look forward to welcoming you back on Tuesday for more exceponal learning experiences across the academy. Reception

Potter class has been learning about Mini-beasts this week. We have learnt about the features of insects and arachnids and we have looked at the differences between these two types of creature by counting their legs and wings etc. We have been making some mini-beast puppets and we have been reading fun stories about these creatures. In Phonics, we are blending some sounds to make simple words and we are having lots of fun with the magnetic boards. In Maths, we have been focusing on counting up to 20, onward and backwards, and have been enjoying dancing and singing number songs together.

This week in Reception we have been learning about plants and talking about what they need to grow. We conducted a science experiment to test whether plants really absorb water, adding food colouring to the water in our vase of flowers. We are now eagerly waiting to see whether the petals change colour and demonstrate that water has been absorbed! In reading we looked at 'Oliver's Vegetables' and on Monday we prepared and enjoyed a delicious healthy salad using some of the vegetables from the story. In literacy we continued our work on 'The Little Red Hen' and started innovating, ready to begin writing our own versions of the story next week. In Maths we have been learning about grouping and sharing. We shared magic beans equally amongst farm animals and explored grouping objects in tens.

Year 1 In Literacy, we have been looking at what makes a good story. We have explored how to use alliteration, sentence openers and adjectives. Together we have analysed example narratives and ‘magpied’ words that we would like to use in our own writing next week. We have continued to explore numbers to 100 in Maths, still focussing on place value. We have learnt how to compare and order two-digit numbers. To find which number is the greatest, we need to look at which number has the most tens. If both numbers have an equal number of tens, we then compare the ones. We have used dienes and bead strings to support us with this. In our Topic lessons, we have continued our adventures with Pirate Pete. We have been helping him to understand how to use a range of maps. We used atlases, globes and google maps to locate the United Kingdom. In addition to this, we named the four countries within the UK. Finally, in DT we made mood boards, gathering ideas for our t-shirt designs. We discussed what we already know about pirates and then used the iPads to search for images linked to the theme. We used an app to create a collage of the images we found.

Some very tasty

learning in Reception

this week!

Childcare Vouchers

Edenred Childcare Vouchers can also be used to pay for breakfast and after school clubs the ‘P’ number you require is:

P21112141

Reception Classes! Can children please bring into school a photo of themselves as a baby for their lesson on Wednesday 3rd May. These can be emailed to the school office if that’s easier for you.

Breakfast Club

Breakfast club will begin running from the 18th April 2017 for the next two terms, until the Summer holidays.

This will be a trial period, which we hope to continue should it prove to be successful.

We hope this will provide you with further options and flexibility for childcare, which supplements our current after school club and P3 offerings.

The Breakfast club will run from

7:15-8:15 each morning.

The following options exist:

£20 per week, breakfast included.

£15 per week, no breakfast included (you could bring your own or eat before attending).

£5 per day, breakfast included.

Payment is made in advance of attending sessions. Payment can be brought along to the breakfast club for the first week. Thereafter, this can be handed to Mr Currie in the office.

The doors leading directly to the hall will be used to enter breakfast club. Follow the pavement past the main school entrance and you’ll be greeted by a member of staff.

Please note that children arriving at or after 8am will not be admitted to breakfast club, they should enter the school by the usual entrance.

We are trialling this club in response to parent requests for such a service and welcome any other suggestions you may have.

Birthday Cake We are always happy to celebrate birthdays in school.

We welcome you brining in cakes for the children in your child’s class to enjoy, if you wish. However, due to some of children having very severe allergies, we’d like to ask that if you are going to do so, could you please send cakes individually wrapped (and free from nuts where possible) for each child. This way the children can be sent home with them to enjoy without children coming into contact with anything that may cause a reaction.

Collection for Lisa

Thank you for your generous donations to Lisa’s collection and to all who signed her cards and left well wishes for us to

pass on.

She will now receive a lovely bouquet of flowers every two weeks on behalf of all of the parents. We have also sent a hamper of gifts for her to enjoy. The first selection will have arrived with her

last week.

All of the staff across the entire academy share your sentiments and wish Lisa a speedy recovery.
