As the Principal of Saint Paul Catholic High School I continue to be impressed with the talents and contributions of our students to the school and to the local and global communities. Saint Paul students continue to lead the way with their generosity and involvement in social justice issues, as they demonstrate consistently that they are living the Gospel values. I thank each and every one of you for your servant leadership, you truly do possess the “Heart of a Patriot.” Very soon we will bid farewell to the class of 2018 and wish them Godspeed on their journey. They have much to celebrate. They entered Saint Paul as shy young teenagers and will leave us as self-assured young adults with a whole world of possibilities before them. My wish for them is simple: “May the best you’ve ever seen, be the worst you’ll ever see.” Congratulations graduates! We are now on the cusp of summer. Please take this time to refresh and recharge, connect with family and friends and spend time enjoying our great Niagara weather. On behalf of the Staff and Administration of Saint Paul Catholic High School I wish you a safe and happy summer and we look forward to seeing you again in the fall. God Bless: Mr. B. Johnstone

The last few months of the 2017-2018 school year has been a time of joy and celebration in our

community. Our graduates had the opportunity to celebrate with their peers from all 8 Niagara Catholic

high schools at the annual Graduation Celebration. After being encouraged to be people of hope by

Bishop Gerard Bergie they had the opportunity to listen to the keynote speaker for the year, Fr. Tony

before returning to school for a class BBQ.

Our graduation Mass this year was celebrated by Fr. Gerard Power from St. Patrick’s parish. Fr. Gerard

shared his struggles in finding his calling in life and encouraged our students to turn to God for

guidance as they try to find their own way in life.

I wish you and your family a restful summer vacation and I look forward to seeing our returning

students in September as we continue to put our faith into action here at Saint Paul.

God bless,

Greg Robertson

Chaplaincy Team Leader

It has been an eventful past couple months for athletics here at Saint Paul! The spring sports teams have not disappointed and have participated in some exciting seasons. Baseball, rugby, soccer, rowing, squash, and track and field teams have represented the blue and white extremely well and we are very proud! In May, Athletic Council played a major role in making another successful grade 8 day come to life. This included an intense series of dodgeball games where the senior and junior intramural dodgeball champions battled it out to see who would advance onto the teacher game. After 3 games, it was the juniors who came out on top and even won against the all-star teacher team! After dodgeball, the grade 8s headed outside where they joined our Patriots for Food Truck Day. Athletic Council also organized a dunk tank where students had the chance to dunk some brave teachers. Shout out goes to Miss. McDonald, Mr. Robertson, Mr. Stranges, and Mr. Keighan for stepping up to the plate! Council is looking forward to the upcoming annual athletic awards assembly where St. Paul’s most valued athletes are recognized for their outstanding contributions!

The Saint Paul Senior Boys soccer team had another excellent season falling short of their OFSAA quest. The boys finished NCAA play with a 4 win- 2 tie- 1 loss record and a 3rd place finish. In the playoffs Saint Paul defeated St. Michael's and E L Crossley and with these wins the squad captured another Zone 3 Championship. At SOSSA the season came to an end with a tough loss to Holy Cross 3-2. During the season the boys were champions in the 1st Annual Saint Paul Invitational and the Niagara Cup. Mr. Seca, Mr. Tropea and Andrew Baldin would like to congratulate all graduating players and wish them good luck in their future endeavors.

The Varsity Girls soccer team had a very successful season. After finishing in first place in the regular season undefeated with 5 wins and two ties, the girls faced St. Francis in the NCAA Championship game. They defeated the Phoenix with a commanding win of 4-0 which makes them the NCAA Champions of 2018!

Despite having a fairly young squad, there are several graduating players who will be missed, namely Sonia Aggarwal, Loreana Armenti, Alexis Baird, Megan Falco (Co-Captain), Natalie Pizzacalla, Sarah Scerbo (Co-Captain) and Shannon Stoyka. Coaches Abbruscato and Di Carlo-MacLean thank you for your many years of commitment to our program and wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavours.

The Rowing Crews had an exciting season with lots of traveling, racing and earned hardware. The highlight of the year was the Sr. boys, Tony DiDomenico and James Sisley, who qualified and traveled to Camden, New Jersey to participate in the prestigious Stotesbury Cup High School Championship regatta. After a weekend of hard racing the boys came home with a bronze medal. The junior program also raced locally with great success. Ali Iacobaccio won a gold medal in the junior girls’ single race in Welland. In the Western Ontario Secondary School Championships in London the junior boys double, Andrew Laliberte and Chris Sisley won a gold medal along with the junior girls, Sophia Scott, Caroline Candeloro, Olivia Hartl and Alissandra Iacobaccio who won silver and bronze medals in their double races. Adam Pozzobon raced this season as a single sculler and won a bronze medal in London as well. The crews trained hard all winter long and it helped with the success in their spring races.

Students from the CLN 4U Senior Law class participated in the second annual OJEN Mock Trial Tournament held at the Robert K. Welch courthouse in St. Catharines on May 2, 2018. Saint Paul was the defending champions this year as schools in the Niagara Region once again competed for the crown. The class defended their title well in the R. v. Rogers manslaughter case by defeating a “Dream Team” made up of students from competing schools in the opening trial. In the second round, Saint Paul performed very well and came out victorious against A.N. Myer. When all of the scoring was tallied, the class came up ½ point short of qualifying for the final round. Mr. J. Oreskovich is very proud of team members: Carling Revill, Leah Pantusa, Jessica Neville, Jesse Marek, Jack Hinchliffe, Briar Henderson, Madison Hartl, Nicole Gregory, Carissa Feng, and Dan Brady.

Students from Mr. J. Oreskovich’s CLN 4U class and Mrs. Serravalle’s CLU 3M class travelled to the Robert K. Welch courthouse in St. Catharines on May 9th to observe the criminal justice system in the Provincial Court, Criminal Division. Upon arrival, the class was given an orientation by well-known lawyer, Mike DelGobbo where they learned about life as a criminal defense attorney and the challenges of being a lawyer. After the presentation, the students attended various criminal matters from narcotics possession to probation violations to a dangerous offender hearing. The visit gave students a firsthand look at the Canadian criminal justice system and options for possible career paths.

It has been an extremely busy year for the Saint Paul Ivy League gardening club, with several exciting projects culminating this spring season. Club VP Cole Morningstar’s team reinvigorated the “Saint Paul Nature Trail” just north of the student parking lot by mulching the paths, installing student-generated tree identification signs (thanks Mr. Gordon!) and pruning some of the 120 student-planted trees that adorn this miniature forest area. A sunflower “Seed Bomb” event capped our efforts to naturalize the trail with a non-invasive flowering plant. Our award winning front gardens were spectacular in their array of spring colours and promise of summer splendor. According to club co- president, Jenny Huang, our South wall gardens are 90% completed and feature hardy flowering shrubs designed to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Club-co-president Julia Fabiano, states, “we have established several community partnerships to help promote our gardens but are most proud of our ongoing connection with several student-lead initiatives including: our community vegetable garden with culinary arts, Our Lady of the Scapular and the city of Niagara Falls; the Saint Paul Memorial Garden with our Visual Arts and Technical Arts departments; our participation with Eco-club, and the Arts and Tech departments in the city ‘Schools in Bloom’ program.” The Ivy League extends many thanks to the countless student volunteers that help to beautify the Saint Paul gardens!

Mrs Cadorette’s grade 9 exploring

technology class designed and

built race cars powered by a CO2

cartridge and enjoyed racing

them.

In the construction class, Mr. Gordon's students

were eagerly finishing the semester with a special

year end project. The class built a wooden grotto

for our St. Paul Mother Mary garden statue. This

was a great project that challenged the students

with design, planning, and problem solving through-

out the process. Special thanks to the following

students who took lead on the project:

Siar Esckendari, Michael Duquette, Stefan Watson,

Alexei Kosowski and Anthony Mancini.

This was an incredible year for our Dance Team!! We competed at Dance Canada and Niagara's

Best Dance Crew in Hip Hop, Lyrical, Tap and Lyrical Duet. We took home Golds in both

competitions which was a great accomplishment, seeing this is only our third year! I can't wait to see

what happens next season!!

Also, it is with a sad heart that I would like to say goodbye to my beautiful grads. They were

incredible young ladies, and I know that they will conquer whatever comes next! They were fierce on

the stage, and I know they will attack the next part of their journey just like they do in dance!! Never

forget that if you dance with your heart, your feet will follow!!

On Tuesday June 5th 2018, the Grade 10 Civics Class held a mock student vote for the Provincial

Election. This event was held outside of the cafeteria during early and late lunch which attracted close

to 200 students who casted their vote for the platform they would like to have seen take office. The

vote led by Miss Fleming’s Civics class was used to teach the grade 10 students about the election

process and to familiarize the whole school with the voting process. The class was divided into teams

which were vital to running this election. The events team and the promotional teams were

responsible for getting the school excited and prepared to participate in the event. The overall day

was a huge success with the culminating experience of being on the front page of the Niagara Falls

Review for Wednesday June 6, 2018. Well done Saint Paul for showing your Patriot civic pride and

exercising your right to vote.
