CareOne Card Making District Convention

Page 2: Key Club Hub - February 2015

This is the last issue of Volume III of the Key Club Hub. With District Convention quickly approaching, the service year is nearing its end. It has been great writing this newsletter and keeping Key Clubbers informed on what is occurring in the club. The entire board is so grateful to have had so many amazing Key Clubbers that have been more than happy to take on active roles in service. Everyone should be so proud for what they have done both in the community and in the school! Despite the end of this service year, Key Club is not ending and we look forward each Key Clubber’s continued support and participation in our club.

Yours in Caring Service, Trevor Wood

Letter from the President

Dear Key Clubbers, Can you believe it? Already a whole service year has come and gone, leaving us with another Board Elections just around the corner! I wanted to take the time to personally thank all the devoted service members who contributed to the community and LHS Key Club. As a large club of over 250 members, it humbles me to know we all share the similar goal of working together to improve the society we live in. One of my favorite events of this year was Intergenerational Prom, where over 100 members came to help give the senior citizens a Prom to remember! I think it's also very important to highlight the smaller events that make just as much of a difference than the larger events. The LACD Sports Clinic is a fantastic way to combine our athletic skills and helping the community. This event, though smaller, impacts lives in ways you cannot imagine. As my service year comes to and end, I cannot thank-you all enough for your efforts, and I hope Key Club has influenced you to continue brightening the lives of the community in your future. Yours in Caring Service, Niamh Tattersall

General Member Submissions One of the great things about the Newsletter is not just that it keeps members informed

on our club’s news, but also the fact that it allows for any member of Key Club to voice their opinions and share their experiences with the club and with service. In this section, three members share what Key Club means to them, and the ways it has shaped them

When I first joined key club, the words meant little to me as I just had the mindset of trying out new clubs and opportunities. However, as I got integrated more and more with the club, I found that there was a hidden, more powerful meaning to Kiwanis Educating Youth that that would leave a lasting mark on how I saw the world. As a person coming from a privileged society, I never took the time to truly appreciate the luck I was given until that frigid Saturday morning as I stood in front of Anthony Franco’s asking for donations for The Eliminate Project and Jeff Tamburri, a man who had been in a tragic accident. But, the most lasting memory was when a ShopRite worker, who happened to be on break, came over and volunteered some money without a single word from me. It amazed me how someone who didn’t even have so much himself would find it in his heart to look out for others less fortunate without the slightest trace of hesitance. So the lesson I learned that day showed me that any hardships that I experience are insignificant to those who are actually suffering in the world, and that man taught me that giving to others can be a source of happiness in life, something that key club is all about.

I joined Key Club at the start of my high school career because at freshmen orientation I talked to a few of the current board members who told me a few things about the club. After hearing about the club I figured it would be a good idea to give back my time by helping out the community. By attending various events, besides filling hours of community service, I had the chance to make new friends and involve my current ones; this let me enjoy each event more because I had other people around me that had similar interests and this made me more aware of others and my community. While going to different events that helped the less fortunate, disabled, and elderly, I have learned that my efforts won't go to waste and that service is perhaps the greatest gift a person can give.

Tracy C. This year I was truly able to immerse myself fully into Key Club events. To me, Key Club isn’t

just another rung on the ladder to college but rather something much more meaningful. My full participation in Key Club allowed me to give back to my community. Events such as the LACD Holiday Party or Black Friday Fundraiser showed me how rewarding it is to bring joy to others. Key Club is important because it teaches young adults to care about those around them. Each year, I continue to join Key Club not only for the benefits it provides to my community but also for the overwhelming feeling of pride I feel when I see my efforts that may seem trivial come to fruition and bring absolute joy to those around me.

CareOne Valentine’s Day Card Making Page 4

One of the organizations that our club works very close with is CareOne. CareOne is a company that provides housing and assisted living for senior citizens. Our club has been able to assist in many of the activities that CareOne organizes. It provides the perfect opportunity for Key Clubbers to give back to their community in a very direct and personal way. Recently, we helped the senior citizens to make Valentine’s Day cards for their families and loved ones.

District Convention District Convention is a great opportunity for Key Clubbers to get more involved. This

year’s convention is going to be held in Long Branch, NJ from March 27th to the 29th. The theme for the convention is Harry Potter, and we are being represented by the Slytherin House!

At the convention itself, the entire New Jersey Key Club engages in tons of fun activities. From workshops, to contests, to dances and more, there is never a dull moment! The convention is a fantastic opportunity for anyone to learn what Key Club is about, and to find many chances to get further involved. The convention is open to all members of the club, and everyone is encouraged to attend.
