No. 89 Friday 2nd March 2012 With this newsletter you will receive Year 3 Outing permission slip for St Paul's Cathedral Spring Concert 12th March Tickets First Eleven magazine for years 3 to 5 Dear Parents, We are all very much looking forward to the forthcoming Music Concerts. It is wonderful to hear such a range of music being rehearsed in school and we hope you will be as impressed as we are with your children’s tal- ent. We are tremendously proud of all our Year 6 children, who have worked so hard and so successfully for their entrance exams. There are still one or two results to come in and as soon as we have them all we will be pub- licising them. Those children are now embarking on an exciting programme of work to stretch them further. The earlier drop-off time seems to be making things easier for parents in terms of timing and clearing parking spaces. The new afternoon system for Years 5 and 6 seems also to be working well, but we are concerned about the occasional uncertainty about who is supposed to be taking certain children home, so please could you make sure to sign the book outside the door in the morning saying very clearly what the arrangements are for that day. If your child is going home with another parent it is your responsibility to let us know about this in writing. A phone call late in the day is not acceptable as these messages often cause confusion. Thank you for your cooperation with this. A reminder that we are beginning to think about the election for our new school charity. House meetings will start to be held during the week of March 12 th to put forward your suggestions, so please discuss this with your children and collect information if you wish them to be involved. Thank you. Anne Dobell HEADTEACHER’S COMMENDATIONS Congratulations to the following children, who received the award this week: Georgia R in 4F for consistently excellent Creative Writing. FIND WENLOCK AND MANDEVILLE

THE OLYMPICS ARE COMING.

GET INVOLVED BY TAKING PART IN THE KEW COLLEGE WENLOCK (London Olympic 2012 mascot) AND MANDEVILLE HUNT (London Paralympic 2012 mascot). Each week a small picture of Wenlock and a small picture of Mandeville will be hidden around school. Your task (if you wish to accept it) is to find them. When you have found the 2 mascots, you need to write down their locations and your

name on a piece of paper (you can get someone to help you write it) and place your answer

in the Olympic box (by the front door) for your chance to win a weekly Olympic prize.

Debating Club: Balloon Debate Heats

During this week’s Debating Club, the children took part in a balloon debate. Speaking in role as a famous person, either alive or dead, they had to con-vince their fellow debating club members of the reasons why they should re-main in a hot air balloon that only has space for one! Although it was a closely run contest, with many convincing and compelling arguments, the two final-ists are Alexander Fleming (Luke Year 6) and Bill Gates (Ned 5L). Next week, the finalists will debate for the final time before voting com-

mences to decide the person who deserves to stay in the balloon! A summary

of the key arguments will be included in next week’s Kew News. There will

also be a debate on the relevance of the Olympic Games which I am looking

forward to adjudicating!

On Tuesday 28th February Year 4C team played a match against Fulham Prep. The whistle went and Fulham Prep had the first centre pass. But they didn’t have it for long as Kew College intercepted the ball. Sadly no one had a shot in the first third of the match. We came in for a team talk and the umpire told both teams what we needed to work on. So we walked back onto the pitch keeping in mind what the umpire had told us. It was our chance to shoot but sadly we couldn’t score. It was the last five minutes and both teams were determined to shoot. After a few minutes of going up and down each end of the pitch Fulham Prep scored. There was about one minute left of the game so Kew College tried to shoot but the final whistle blew and the score was 1 - 0 to Fulham Prep. I think we played really well, so well done to all the girls that played. Emma 4L

Year 4 Rugby Match - Tuesday 28th February Kew Green 6 - Kew College 8 We arrived at Kew Green in blazing sunshine, feeling confident after some rousing words from Mr Barlow although a little nervous as this was only our third match of full contact rugby. The captains shook hands and I lost the toss so Kew Green made the first pass. Thomas A ran in for a tough tackle but Kew Green made a quick pass and romped home for the first try. We walked back with our chins up and quickly Thomas Y passed down the line to Daniel B who ran forward and slipped the ball to Oliver and then back to Thomas Y who scored our first try. Lachie scored the second and Thomas A our third and fourth but Kew Green kept ahead and at half time it was 5 tries to 4. After an inspiring team talk from Mr Barlow we were back on the pitch and raring to go. Two more tries from Thomas Y and another from Thomas A and then it was my turn to score after racing the length of the pitch. It was a tight match right from the start but a real team effort and we walked trium-phantly back to school. The final score was 8 - 6 and for next time we need to concentrate on spreading out and tackling hard. Luca 4F

On Tuesday the 28th of February Year 4 A team played against Fulham Prep. Throughout the game we had some great passing, good interceptions and excellent shooting. Fulham Prep got the first centre pass but Kew College got the ball. Izzy passed to Molly who passed to Jessica. She then who passed to me and I passed back to Jessica who shot a goal. It was a good game and we won 4 - 0. Well done to all the girls who played. It was an excel-lent team effort from all of us! By Lauren 4F
