Where Power Stops: The Making and Unmaking of Presidents and Prime MinistersDavid RuncimanHB £14.99, PB £9.99 Availability: GoodFrom Margaret Thatcher to Donald Trump: each US President and UK Prime Minister had

different motivations, methods, and paths, but they all sought the highest office, only to find the power was an illusion. Runciman tackles the limitations of high office and how the personal histories of those who achieved the very pinnacles of power helped to define their political successes and failures.

How to Be a Dictator: The Cult of Personality in the Twentieth CenturyFrank Dikoetter£25.00, HB, 304pp Availability: GoodNo dictator can rule through fear and violence alone, he must also create the illusion of popular

support. From carefully choreographed parades to the shroud of mystery created through iron censorship, these eight dictators ceaselessly worked on their own image and encouraged the population to glorify them. Are we seeing a revival of the same techniques among some of today’s world leaders?

Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the WorldAnand Giridharadas£9.99, PB, 304pp Availability: GoodIn this revelatory investiagtion, Anand Giridharadas shows how the global elite follow a ‘win-win’ logic,

fighting for equality and justice – except in ways that threaten their position at the top. But why should our gravest problems be solved by consultancies, technology companies, and corporate-sponsored charities instead of public institutions and elected officials? Why should we rely on scraps from the winners?

How to Argue with a RacistAdam Rutherford, £12.99, HB, 224pp Availability: GoodRace is real because we perceive it. Racism is real because we enact it. But the pressure on scientific research to strengthen racist ideologies is on the rise – and increasingly part of the public discourse on politics, migration, education, sport and intelligence.Stereotypes and myths about race are expressed not just by overt racists, but also by well-intentioned

people whose experience and cultural baggage steer them towards views that are not supported by the modern study of human genetics. Even some scientists are uncomfortable expressing opinions deriving from their research where it relates to race.Yet, if understood correctly, science and history can be powerful allies against racism, granting the clearest view of how people actually are, rather than how we judge them to be.
