work.

This is what I hope your application will accomplish in a future version.

1) I install a computer with internet access;2) I load it with all the stuff I need (extra-repositories and packages);3) I install KERYX and take a snapshot of my brand-new machine;4) After that I deploy my machine somewhere without an internet access;5) I go back to my den and download on KERYX profiles' directory the stuff from my machine;6) Sometimes after, I feel I have to apply upgrades to my remote deployed machine;7) I fire KERYX and tell it to download update repositories and upgraded packages;8) I put them on my usb-thumb drive and bring to the offline machine;9) KERYX starts the upgrade process.

Again, good work and keep up.Luca

How can i add a custom ppa in keryx?

Like

If you go to the PPA's page, you can click on the green link that says "Technical details about this PPA." Thatwill give you the lines that you need to add to your sources.list file inside your project folder. Then just refreshthe package lists in Keryx and you should be good.

Thanks for the help, but I'm giving up on this one. Usually, what you don't understand, you can figure out from theinterface controls. I can make almost nothing of this application, even tho' I know exactly what tasks I'm trying toaccomplish.

You can take this, and edit as necessary, to show which GUI control executes each task, or you can delete itentirely.==============================Get the application on an online machine:

1) Download Keryx onto an online machine, and save the application to your local disk/external device/both.

Get a snapshot of the offline machine:

2) Dis-connect and transfer the external device to the offline machine, and launch the application from theexternal device ... OR , transfer the application to the local device of the offline machine, and launch theapplication there.

3) Take a snapshot of the [repository] of the offline machine, and transfer the shapshot to ? folder of the externaldevice.

Return to the online machine...

4) Return the external device to the online machine, and:

a) Transfer the snapshot of the offline machine to the appropriate folder in the application of the online machine, and launch the application in the online machine ...

OR

b) Leave the snapshot of the offline machine in its' place on the external device, and launch the application FROMthe external device.

6) Once the application is launched, select the appropriate interface control [???], to update the snapshot of theoffline machine. The update packages will download to the (application folder of the online machine?/applicationfolder on the external device?).

If the downloaded packages download to the application folder of the online machine, they will have to betransferred to the appropriate folder on the external device.

Return to the offline machine:

7) Connect the external (updated) device to the offline machine, and launch the application (from the externaldevice?)(from the offline machine?).

8) Execute the update function, being sure to have the downloaded packages, as well as the originally installedrepo accessible to the application.

Step 7 lends to MANY questions, depending on from WHERE the application is launched).

These steps make no address of getting non-default packages downloaded and installed.

Like

I'm sorry you're having a lot of trouble with this. Step 7 can be any install of Keryx to open the profile andinstall the packages, or you can simply plug in the flash drive with the packages to the offline machine andinstall with Synaptic.

The whole process is quite confusing because ubuntu no longer allows you to execute programs from theflash drive. I'm very busy with the last month of college so I can't take a whole lot of time to provide support.:( I wish you luck getting software installed on your offline machine though! Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!

"Create a profile."

What does that mean?

Like

The Keryx 1.0 interface will help you through that. A profile is a snapshot of your offline machine. So youneed to start Keryx and follow the instructions on the interface to create a profile. After that, you take Keryxto an online machine along with that profile and open it there.

Like

I downloaded Keryx 1.0 to a USB drive, connected it to the offline machine, and double-clicked. As far asI can tell, Keryx is installed.

I see no prompts in the GUI that will take a 'snapshot' of my current Synaptic.

I see 'Reinstall Package' (keryx).

Like

Make sure that you are running Keryx on your offline machine. If you install it with the debpackage, it will be added to the System menu, or if you run it from source, just double click onbin/keryx.py. When the interface comes up, you create the profile there.

Like

Great - thanks... I DO have it setup in the offline machine. The message at the bottom is'Downloading package lists'. Is it creating the 'snapshot' of the Synaptic? If not, I do not seethe button which DOES do that.

Is this snapshot already done? I see the computer (by its' name) under 'Computer name', andalso under 'Want to manage this computer with Keryx?"

And then, how do I transfer the snapshot to the external device?

All you have to do is click the "Manage" button after you give it a name. You don't have toopen it because Keryx needs internet for that part. The project will be stored in your homedirectory if you installed using the deb, otherwise it will be on the flash drive if you areusing the keryx.py file.

Copy it to your flash drive and either choose it from the list or browse on the onlinemachine and you should be good to go.

Like

Ok; I have the Keryx folder in my /home directory, on the offline machine.

I copied the entire Keryx folder, and sub-folders ['Downloads', and 'Profiles'] to theUSB drive (not a flash/pen drive; just an external USB drive).

Now I've connected the USB drive to an online machine. How does the applicationlaunch?

I don't see Update, or Re-load, or Start Package Management, I just am not seeinganything which resembles ... anything.

Like

Sure. On your online machine (I'm assuming Windows, if it is Ubuntu, you canjust install the deb on there, or go directly to using the source), you'll needPython and PyGTK installed. These two files (install Python first):

http://www.python.org/ftp/pyth...http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME...

You'll need the Keryx source ( http://launchpad.net/keryx/sta... ) after you haveinstalled Python and PyGTK so that you can run it on the online machine. Doubleclick the "bin/keryx.py" file ( the keryx.py in the bin folder ) and it will start onyour new machine. You can then browse to your folder then and open upProfiles, and the one you created should be listed. From there it will downloadthe package lists, show you the list of software you can install and you cansearch for GParted, etc.

To install, you can take the flash drive back home and either open the project upagain with Keryx on the offline machine, or you can open Synaptic and clickFile->Add downloaded packages to have Synaptic install them.

If you're just looking for GParted though, you should try using the Ubuntu CD toinstall that from. It comes on the LiveCD so you can actually add the CD to youroffline machine and install it from there without Keryx or the internet.

I have installed Keryx 1.0 on my laptop, and via a USB key, I have installed it on my desktop, but I have made nofurther progress (I have no experience with Keryx 0.92).Has the vocabulary changed? Most of the comments refer to "creating a project"—is this the same as choosing aprofile on the home-screen of Keryx 1.0?I chose "Want to manage this computer with Keryx", and it immediately began downloading package lists (I wasonline with a dial-up connection) where I had expected it to save a snapshot to my USB key. What I particularly want this for is updates—I only have dial-up at home, and at times it is very erratic.Any advice will be welcome.Brant

Yes, I was hoping to clarify the concept of a profile because Keryx needs a snapshot of your offline machine(now called a "profile" instead of a "project").

I'm not sure why Keryx would have started downloading package lists unless you had opened a profilesomehow.

Try using the interface to download a premade project (if you have 10.04 or 10.10) and skip creating theprofile on the offline machine if that makes it easier for you.

Also tried to open a project created on my ubuntu installation from Windows and got the following: 'Make sure youhave a plugin loaded to support this project'.

I installed both the python and pygtk requirements for windows. What am i getting wrong?

Like

Creating a project happens on your offline machine. Keryx needs a snapshot of the offline computer before itcan do its work online. The error given in 0.92 isn't helpful I realize, but 1.0 hopefully fixes that.

Keryx 1.0 is a complete rewrite and makes it a lot simpler to use but you need to copy the project to a flashdrive or you can download a premade project using the interface.

Like

From the tutorial there's no clear-cut instructions on which actions to carry out on the offline system and on thedownload system. For example, after the instructions on creating a project on the offline system, nothing was saidabout moving the created project to the flash drive installation of Keryx so that the project can be used for thepackage downloads after transferring the flash drive to the download system.I believe a more information is needed in-between 'Creating a Project' and 'Opening a Project'. Like

I apologize for the poor instructions. School started and I have run out of time to work on Keryx for a while.

Creating a project takes a snapshot of your offline computer.

Opening a project loads up that snapshot and downloads the lists of packages you have available. This needsto be done online.

Installing packages that you downloaded in the previous step can be installed various ways on your offlinemachine, and it's probably best if you use Synaptic => File => Add Downloaded Packages to do so. Keryx'sinstallation method works, but it might not be the most stable.

Mind you, Keryx is still very much a work in progress, but it should at least be a good start. :-)

can i use Keryx to ubdate it...or is it only for ubuntu derivates?

Like

Keryx only works with Debian and Ubuntu derivatives. If it Slitaz uses APT for package management, thenyou should be able to use Keryx for it, otherwise I'm afraid not.

It's likely that Keryx missed a dependency and apt refuses to install because it is not there. Great tool,i am now a bit closer to getting ubuntu online, just a quick question, when you say copythe lists in the project folder over to /var/lib/apt/lists, should i overwrite the files if they alreadyexist? sorry if its a stupid question but i am really new to this

Like

Yes, you should overwrite them. Apt will notice that they have changed and re-read them.

Like

The command:sudo apt-get install <package names="">did not work. But I did copy the files as described above, then ran Synaptic Package Manager whichdid install all the packages.

Thank you SO MUCH for this application!!</package>

Like

Glad you got it working! :-)

I think the apt-get install thing didn't work because the comment ended up being weirdlyformatted. What I meant to say was that your command should have looked similar to this, replacing the package names after "install" with the ones you chose.

sudo apt-get install pidgin xchat 3dchess

You'd replace those 3 package names with whatever you chose to install, but it's probablyeasier for most people to use Synaptic to install instead of Terminal anyways.

Hey Enavseo, so it seems that the issue is caused from using the different 32 and 64 bit builds. I think that weonly built 32 bit ones and after testing, had no problems. It seems that some people are having issue withthem. I've actually quit working on the current version because Keryx v1.0 is almost ready and should bedone within the month! :D This new version I will have everything tested out, and different versions built sothat we can handle this issue properly.

If you want to read a little more on the issue, you can read this little article I wrote on it: http://excid3.com/blog/2010/06...

Try running Keryx from keryx.py in the source folder instead. The problem is that we haven'treleased our Linux 64bit binary yet (had some issues) but it works fine from source.

Hello, great tool, but sam problem as others with win32 app, no packages appear in the window. I use Windows 764b.

Like

I follow the Tutorial, but when i select Install packages, nothing happens and the list remains empty...

Like

Did Keryx download the packages already? I'm trying to think of what might cause that.

Like

When I start keryx in windows, it loads and download the lists from repositories just fine. But then it displays no packages at all. From the command prompt, there are tons of error message, each one saying :

XXX lineno: 322, opcode :52Unable to open file: unknown opcode

any clues as to what I should do ?

You are running the Windows executable I imagine?

And I just received that same opcode error as you did. I'm looking into it tonight and hopefully willbe able to figure it out and post a patched version soon. Sorry about this!

Are you using a specific locale or anything? I've never come across this error before and Googlingaround didn't find me much either. What servers are you using? 32 bit or 64 bit? Anything othererrors or unique things about your environment you are running this on?

Oh and I would like to thank you and the keryx development team for this wonderful piece ofsoftware. At least in this respect, debian-based is miles ahead of it's competitors.I always found it funny how Linux is often touted as "the OS" for poor country when youusually -need- high speed internet connection to have a great Linux experience.

I am using Linux Mint 9, x64 version.I used keryx in 2009 for a whole year without problem. It has helped me a great deal and was ahuge reason I still use Linux at all.I'd go to an internet cafe / campus / office with high speed internet and download softwarethen install them at home. No problem at all.

I recently installed Linux Mint 9. I am not sure about the locale but I can check if you'd tell me.I can tell you however that I set the location to : Indonesia.Language and Keyboard to : US English.

Now, when I tried to download updates two days ago. Sometimes I was able to do that. Idownloaded 800 mb worth of updates and softwares including KDE and XFCE. But then I gotthat problem where no package was shown (running in Windows, in Linux its no problemo).

Still don't know what I did wrong. I am going to try running keryx in windows, using the sourcecode. Been having problem with downloading wxpython cos sourceforge is soooo slow.

From what I can tell so far since I got the problem, it appears to be something wrong withour binary code. Seems like running from source doesn't have any trouble but once it'scompiled there are unexpected problems. Someone else today mentioned the issue to meso hopefully I can get this figured out quickly.

Thanks chris for your help and patience. I did what you said and it is working..!!!!But still the the application in the win32 folder is not working.Anyways, thanks very much..!!! You fixed my problem.

Glad that worked! We have had some trouble with the executables recently so we will look into getting thosefixed up. Thanks for the feedback.

thanks for the reply. No, there are no error messages. When I run Keyrx it just shows me the command prompt and then closes down. Itried to open it many times, but still and I tried it in another computer also Windows 7 and also it didn't work. I amusing 32 bit.Thanks.

Like

Hmmm, double checked and it runs fine on my 64bit Win7. Do you happen to have admin permissions? If soyou could try running Keryx from source (source/keryx.py) after installing Python 2.5 and wxPython (forversion 2.5). If you do that, then whatever error is causing Keryx to crash will show and we can figure outhow to fix it for you.

Is there an error message given on Windows 7 for you? If you didn't get an error message, can you open upthe command prompt and run Keryx from there to see what it outputs? Are you using 32bit or 64bit?

Raymond, you'll have to create your project on the Debian machine. If keryx won't start, try running it in theterminal so you can see any errors. Then post the errors here, on the forums, or report a bug on Launchpad.

Like

No, the problem was I was trying to create a project under windows but now when I go into debian and doubleclick on keryx it does nothing.

Like

You are trying to create the new project on the Ubuntu machine correct? If you can't get that to work, you caneasily download the premade projects and use one of those. We are still working on gathering the Lucid files forit's premade project but it should be ready shortly.

Like

When I try to create a project it comes up with the message:

Please create the project on the plugin's supported OS.

I have the project name in the left hand box.debian is the only option in the drop down next to it.and when I click on New Project it gives me the above message.
