We all know being a member of your local chamber of commerce is a good business strategy. More so, we all know being a member of the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce is a GREAT business strategy. What you might not know is seven out of ten consumers believe that being actively involved in the Chamber is an effective strategy for enhancing a business’ reputation and for demonstrating that it uses good business practices. Furthermore, specifically in the South, customers are 82% more likely to patronize your business if you are a member of the Chamber of Commerce. The new chamber year is upon us and it promises to be a good year. I expect with new staff leadership and with new blood on our board we will see some changes with our chamber. I am excited to work with our new president and leader, Traci Carlson and excited to welcome our new board members, Paul Avery, Scott Rain, Bart Stevens, and Kari Wilt. Their fresh eyes, business experience and wisdom will serve you well.

Before I proceed I must offer special thanks to Bob Waller our retiring chairman. During the past year he has gone above-and-beyond; serving as chairman of the board, interim president, chairman of the presidential search committee, as well as service on the government affairs committee. He also took a very active roll to call members to ask them to renew and to

welcome new members to the chamber. We are fortunate that Bob was the board chair in this time of transition—I couldn’t have done all that he did. Bob, I hope you know how grateful we are for your service.

I also want to express my thanks to Joe Herring, Trevor Hyde, and Linda Somerville, who are retiring from our board. All have been mentors to me and they represent years of service and experience. When you see them around town, I hope you will thank them for all the wonderful work they’ve done on behalf of our members and the Kerrville area business community. They will be missed.

As the new year starts, my commitment to you is to focus on the things that will benefit our members and the business community. My vision for the chamber’s work this year

is in all we do the following principles will be paramount:

•Is there a benefit to our members?•Does it drive business to our members?•Does it encourage people to travel to the Kerrville area?•Will it be profitable for the chamber?•And how can we build stronger partnerships to build the area’s economy?

I look forward to working with you to these ends and I look forward to hearing from you (good, bad, or ugly). If you ever have a question, suggestion, concerns, or praise for the work the chamber is doing, please let me know. My direct line at work is 792-7215.

This month is our 2 year anniversary in downtown Kerrville!

How did you get in this business?: I, Keri, took a job out of college in California doing sales in the tech industry. So Patrick, who still had a year left in school, took an internship with a Wine Store in Dallas, knowing he would be following me to California as soon as he graduated, and thinking this would get his foot in the door in the wine industry. Unfortunately, no one explained to this Texas girl that there was a MAJOR cost of living difference in California—and after living on 32 cent cans of Campbell’s soup 3

times a day—I transferred back to Dallas after about 10 months. Patrick graduated a few months later and was offered a job in Dallas with a distributor selling wine to all of the high end restaurants and bars. Patrick worked for wine distributors all of his career opening him up to a world of relationships in the wine industry that are always represented on the walls of the wine shop and on the wine list today. In 2008, after the birth of our second child, we made the decision to move the Hill Country in search of a simpler life with more community…and less “keeping up with the Jones’s”. Patrick had always longed to open his own business and was frustrated at the lack of good wine selection in the area. So, after months of driving by the little rock building in Ingram thousands of times…we took a chance with Patrick’s 10 years of wine experience and opened GRAPE JUICE, a retail wine shop focusing on great wines under $25.

What is your favorite aspect of doing business in Kerrville? For sure the people(both customers and our amazing staff family) are what makes us tick. Grape Juice has been coined by many locals as “Kerrville’s Living Room”, because over the last two years, it has become a true community meeting place. You can walk in on any given day or night and see people you know. And it’s small enough that if you didn’t know someone when you walked in, chances are you will when you walk out. We love that.

In what ways has the Chamber been a resource for you? The Chamber played a critical role in the opening of Grape Juice, as it provided us the resource of the San Antonio Small Business Administration. The SBA local representative walked with us hand in hand through the business planning process, which we believe, provided us with a roadmap for success. We are both also graduates of the Leadership Kerr Country program and have found this to be an invaluable resource daily. The relationships

we developed with our classmates as well as business, city and county leaders in the community are key to keeping us and our business plugged into community events, issues, progress and more. What does your business do for the community? Grape Juice works with local charities to host Grape Juice Give Back Nights. Once a month the Charity takes over Grape Juice, decorates it to their theme, and invites the community to Grape Juice for a FUNdraising event. That night there are silent auctions and raffles as well as a portion of food sales is donated to the charity. It’s been a fun and easy way for charities to raise awareness and funds for their local causes. The next events are Thursday Oct 13th for Executive Women’s Club who raise money for local cancer needs and women’s scholarships, and Thursday November 5th we will help raise funds for American Red Cross Disaster Relief.

Grape Juice also supports local purveyors by featuring truly wild game on our menu from Broken Arrow Ranch in Ingram with

our Antelope Nachos and Sliders, and the quail for the Flying Tacos come from Diamond H Quail in Bandera. We also rotate our wall art often, always featuring local artists throughout the space.

When living in Dallas, Keri worked for Crayola, and Patrick worked for a wine distributor. On particularly stressful work days, they would reassure the other one by saying things like “We are not doctors and no one’s life is in jeopardy…It’s just Crayons…It’s Just Grape Juice”. And it strikes us even today how that one quote embodies what Grape Juice is all about. It’s JUST Grape Juice…don’t overthink it…if you like it great…if you don’t…try a different one. We believe Wine, and Beer, and Food should be a journey in trying new things and experiences and we strive to provide those experiences daily to our customers.

“I have a very blessed life,” says Mike Huff, local president of Wells Fargo Bank. Mike is responsible for the business banking operations in the West Hill Country, which includes branches in Ingram, Comfort, Bandera, and two branches in Kerrville.

A Boy Chooses BAnkingMike’s father was in the Air Force for twenty-eight years. As

a result, the family lived all over the United States, from New England to the Heartland, and when Mike was a teen, they lived in his mother’s native country of England.

“I went to boarding school at London Central High from grades nine and ten,” Mike remembers, “and got to know my English relatives.” When his dad was transferred back to the States, he finished high school in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

As Mike was nearing graduation, his father sat him down to discuss his future plans. “It’s time for you to either get a job or join the military,” his dad told him, “and I’m hoping you’ll follow in my footsteps and choose military.” Mike knew the military wouldn’t be the best fit for him, and he wanted an education. He told his parents he wanted to go to college instead, and they told him it just wasn’t a possibility.

Over the years, the path to the Air Force would be followed by his sister, whose husband is stationed in Palmdale, California, and by his brother who is at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, Louisiana. But Mike chose not to follow that path, and took his father’s advice to get a job. He worked in construction, sweating under the hot New Mexico sun, breaking up concrete and swinging a sledgehammer until his back ached. It wasn’t the life he had hoped for, but it was a paying job he was grateful to have.

“That first Christmas after I graduated from high school, I was watching It’s a Wonderful Life on TV and thought, ‘I want to be George Bailey!’ I knew right then I wanted to be a banker and live in a community where people would know me and see me as a standup guy. I was fascinated by the financial world, where one must make decisions based not only on the past, but also on the future.”

He mentioned these ideas to a coworker buddy on the construction site the next day. That friend told Mike about options that might be available for going to college, even if his parents weren’t able to help him out. Mike researched it, and wound up putting himself through college at New Mexico State University by working various jobs, including head bouncer in a rowdy bar.

Mike’s first banking job was as a teller in a small New Mexico savings and loan. He went on to handle consumer loans and mortgages and found his passion was for business banking. Weathering the bad times of the 1980s and early 90s helps him see that although we are currently in a down cycle, “recessions are typically followed by years of prosperity.” He realizes there is a great deal of deferred demand that will blossom once world markets stabilize.

When Mike got a job at Wells Fargo in Amarillo, he found out what a generous organization it is. Wells Fargo is among the most generous of all corporations in the country for donating money to charities and non-profits. Mike is a member of the Rotary Club of Kerrville and serves on the boards of CASA, Big Brothers / Big Sisters, United Way, and is on the advisory council of the new Boys and Girls Club.

“Wells Fargo has been around a long time,” says Mike. “Our corporate giving doesn’t change just because the economy is down. This is the Wells Fargo philosophy, and

I’m proud of it. We’re very involved in the community and want to make Kerrville a better place.”

Wells Fargo recently donated $100,000 to the Red Cross to aid victims of the horrible wildfires in the Bastrop area, an act Mike feels exhibits the bank’s true philanthropic spirit. “It’s great to be part of a group that truly cares about others and does what it can to help those in need,” he says. “It’s an honor to be able to provide for a community, to make it a better place to live, whether it’s aid for natural disasters or a scoreboard for a sports team.”

The banking industry has been experiencing some turmoil recently, and Mike says, “It’s unfortunate, but the truth is, I still see a lot of honor in banking. We help people send their kids to college, we help families buy homes, and we help expand small local businesses. Watching real people succeed financially is a goal we have, and I’m proud of that.”

CAlling kerrville homeMike Huff didn’t know much about Kerrville

when he heard about an opening at the bank in the West Hill Country, other than that it was located in the beautiful Texas hills. “That was 2007,” he recalls, “a very rainy year. It was so lush and green. We fell in love with the town and the surrounding area, with its interesting shops and restaurants, progressive arts and cultural scene, active business environment, and most of all, the friendly people.”

The “we” is Mike and his wife Charlotte, who is an officer on the board of the Kerrville Public School Foundation. “She’s very involved in education. Her parents were both teachers, and she loves words, loves to read, and writes short stories.”

When Mike met Charlotte in Lubbock, she was a court reporter. They fell in love and spent nine years in Amarillo. They planned to have a family and were sad when they found they were unable to have children. So they decided to enroll in a foster-adopt program. This involved hours of classes, rigorous background checks and inspections, and testimony from friends and family. With all the red tape and paperwork, the couple realized it might take a long time before they found a child to call their own.

But then they got a call: A premature baby was in the neonatal ICU at the local hospital. Doctors weren’t sure the child would survive. The caseworker asked the couple to consider taking her in despite all that. Mike and Charlotte rushed over, and as soon as their eyes fell on that tiny little girl, they were in love. A decade later, Nicole Huff is a healthy fifth grade student at Starkey Elementary School.

When Nicole was six, Mike and Charlotte adopted Mason, a funny and active boy who attends St. Peter’s Preschool and plays flag-football through the YMCA.

“I love my job. I try to come in early each morning so I can leave by five and help coach Mason’s team and spend time with my family.”

Mike believes the Hill Country is a great location for businesses. He found the community very welcoming and supportive. “This town is special to me,” Mike says. “I like where it’s going. The state of Texas is one of the only states that is reporting significant population growth. People are drawn here because of employment opportunities, low cost of living and appealing life style. It’s a great place to live.”

We’re glad that Mike and Charlotte are two who made the decision to settle here and enrich our town.

On August 23, 2011, Kerrville Police Officer Paul Gonzales received the Ray Ramon Peace Officer of the Year Award at the Texas Police Academy Alumni Banquet held in Galveston, Texas.

The Ray Ramon Peace Officer Award is an honor bestowed upon a Texas peace officer deemed to have contributed the most to the development of the Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association (CPAAA) program during 2010-2011.

The award is named in honor of the officer who hosted the first CPAAA Convention in 1993, Officer Ray Ramon. In the fall of 1990 Officer Ramon, Sgt. Glenn Repp, and Mr. Tom Bryson the department Community Relations, Crime Prevention Coordinator, and Public Information Officer, respectively, of Duncanville Police Department graduated their First Citizens Police Academy Class. During the next three years, Officer Ramon and Mr. Bryson helped several police departments in Texas and around the nation to start their Citizen Police Academy programs. Officer Ramon worked with the Dallas Police Department to start their CPA program.

Officer Gonzales and several members of the Kerrville Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association attended the Texas Citizen Police Academy Alumni Convention.

The convention offers assistance and training to the various Citizen Police Academy Alumni Associations within the State of Texas to serve their communities by supporting the law enforcement agencies in their area.

Officer Gonzales was honored at the Kerrville City Council Meeting on September 13.

In 1999 Better Consumer Choices set out to find, verify and promote honest companies in our community. While our processes have become more efficient and standardized, our goal has not changed. BCC continues to seek, represent and hold accountable only those businesses with the ability to pass a high level of scrutiny and distinguish themselves as advocates for consumer protection. Once verified, BCC then promotes these businesses to discriminating consumers, thus making our community a safer place to live and conduct business.

In the past 12 years it has become more evident of the need for third party business verification. In an ever-growing community such as ours, it is important to continually reach out to new community members as well as to reassure our current residents of the integrity of a company. With a slow economy, many new methods of fraud plague the world of small business and have created a fear in the minds of consumers. With so many new fraudulent schemes it has become clear over the past few years that the need for third party verification of companies is crucial. According to local businessman Kyle Bond, “At Terminix, we depend on BCC to help us verify the background of all of our service technicians. Screening of our employees has always been our policy; with BCC we now have another layer of protection for our customers.”

For the past year BCC has been designing a program to meet the needs of the community, businesses and the chamber of commerce. While our marketing goal is to reach out to a national audience, we have met with state chamber officials and have decided to begin in Texas. We are proud to announce that the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce wanted to be the first chamber to partner with BCC and has led the way in Texas. This partnership will provide the chamber members access to new benefits available through BCC membership.

BCC has networked with various insurance companies in order to provide members with potential discounts on business property and casualty insurance

policies. Third party verification of risk management allows an insurance company to validate the processes that are being taken. We are able to provide objective feedback to the business, the insurance company, and to the consumer. According to Robin Miears of Joe Cook & Associates, Inc, “Our association with BCC has enabled us to help those clients, who are BCC members, obtain potential discounts on their commercial insurance.”

Our goal is for the BCC shield to stand as a Good Housekeeping seal of approval for businesses. We highly encourage businesses to utilize the BCC logo in their own marketing material in order to demonstrate their status to the public. Amber Thomas is the Day Camp Director and Naturalist at Presbyterian Mo-Ranch Assembly near Hunt. She received her degree in Parks and Recreation Management from Northern Arizona University. In 2006, Amber joined the staff at Mo-Ranch. She absolutely loves her job as it allows her to acquaint children with the natural world around them in creative and fun ways!

Laurie Montgomery was born in Burlington, WI and moved to San Antonio at age four. Laurie received a volleyball scholarship to the University of Montevallo in Alabama. Laurie was a realtor for three years before she got into the waste industry in 2009, where she has worked for Allied Waste for more than a year. She recently moved to Kerrville with her son and looks forward to their life here.

Richard Eastland is the Head Chef and Kitchen Supervisor out at Camp Mystic, where he manages and oversees the day-to-day operations of the camp kitchen and dining hall. Richard attended The University of Texas and later graduated from Saint Edward’s University. He then attended Texas Culinary Academy in Austin. He has been running the kitchen since 2001.

Dr. Brandon Briery is Camp Director at Children’s Association for Maximum Potential (CAMP). He has a Ph.D. in Clinical Child Psychology and has worked with individuals who have special needs for more than 20 years. He serves on the board of the Children’s Oncology Camping Association-International, and is also actively involved in the American Camp Association and American Psychological Association.

Lee Howard was born in Fort Worth. Lee moved to Kerrville in 1997 and opened Sunset Entertainment. In 2009, Lee and his brother Jim opened Wing King in Kerrville. Lee also purchased Vicki’s Burger Barn in Center Point, Texas, in early 2011 and co-operates the restaurant with his brother. Lee is the proud father of one daughter, Olivia.

Ron Hackett has been married to Tina Hackett over 33 wonderful years. He is retired from the US Army as Chief Warrant Officer with over 22 years’ service. Ron currently works at Coldwell Banker Heart of the Hills and has worked in real estate for over 17 years, Past President of Kerrville Board of Realtors and Kerrville Morning Rotary and also donates time volunteering for the Hill Country Red Cross.

Allison Hinton, Senior Director and Food Service Manager at YMCA Camp Flaming Arrow, grew up in El Campo, TX. She attended Texas State University earning a degree in Recreation Administration. Allison, along with husband Bill, is proud to direct YMCA Camp Flaming Arrow where they live with their two children.

Kristen Johle has over 13 years of professional experience in long term care, home health and assisted living management. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Professions from Texas State University in 1998. She moved to the Hill Country in 2005 with her husband, Colby and two daughters. Denise LeMeilleur has been married to David LeMeilleur for 32 years and together they have 3 boys. Denise and David have owned LeMeilleur’s RV, Truck, & Equipment since June 1998. Denise graduated from Austin Community College with an Associate’s Degree of Science in Business. Both she and David attribute their success to their deep faith and they presently attend Trinity Baptist Church.

Lee Vanacker is a local CPA who has been specializing in the tax area since 2002. He moved back to the Kerrville area in 1997 to attend Schreiner University where he graduated in 2002 with degree in accounting. He began his career at Davidson, Freedle, Espenhover & Overby, and PC before starting his own firm in 2010. He is married to Keely Vanacker and they have one young son.

Scott Bolton lives in Kerrville with his wife, Shelly, and their 4 children. He has worked in the financial services industry for 22 years. Scott graduated from Abilene Christian University (BBA) and the University of Texas (MBA). He also attended Pepperdine University and the Austin Graduate School of Theology. Additionally, Scott has worked as a commercial loan officer and adjunct professor.

Edward Eastland grew up at Camp Mystic in Hunt, where he spent most of his summers working on the grounds as a teenager. Edward received a degree in Government from the University of Texas at Austin in 2007. Since graduating, he has worked full-time at Camp Mystic as Business Manager. He resides on the camp grounds with his wife, Mary Liz, and their two sons, Edward Jr. and Andrew.

Machelle Hazelett is currently the Director of Administrative Services for the Kerrville Public Utility Board (KPUB). She was appointed to the position in May of 2011. Machelle has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from California Coast University. Machelle is a native and long-time resident of Kerr County. She shares her home with her fiancé, his son, and their two furry children.

After moving to the Hill Country in 1999, Steve Schulte’s practice has been centered on litigation related to real estate, construction, fiduciaries, probate, and small businesses. Steve is married to Catherine and they have three children. He is a proud graduate of Texas A&M University, is a board member of the State Bar Solo and Small Firm section, and is active in the Kerrville Noon Rotary Club.

Heath Gregory moved to Kerrville in 1997 to attend Schreiner College and graduated in 2001 with a Bachelors of Business Administration. He married his wife Laurie in June of 2004. They have two beautiful daughters and two Labrador retrievers. Heath has been with Texas Farm Bureau Insurance for 7 years and has been very blessed. His main focus in life is to be the man God created him to be.

Parker Harrison is the Director of the Hill Country Home Opportunity Council Inc. Parker graduated for Schreiner University in 1998. In 2007, Parker started the Hill Country Home Opportunity Council, a non-profit that helps low to moderate income homeowners and homebuyers in the Kerrville area. Parker is married to Sunshine Harrison and has two children.

T. Justin MacDonald is Executive Vice President of MacDonald & Associates, and G. G. MacDonald Inc. He currently serves as the Texas Association of Builders’ Area 4 Vice President. Justin holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Angelo State University. He is also a Certified Graduate Builder through NAHB’s University of Housing.

Janelle Peralt is owner of JP Properties and JP Business Brokers. Janelle received her degree in marketing from Arizona State University. Janelle and her husband, Patrick, have two sons. Janelle is an officer/founder of the Hill Country Business Group, on the board of directors for the Kerrville Rotary noon club, a Harper PTO Board member and committee chair, and race director/founder of the annual Harper 5K Run/Walk.

Ray Watson is the current Executive Director of Kerrville Economic Development Corporation. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Texas A&M University in Agricultural Development and Agricultural Education. Watson serves as a member of Texas Governor Rick Perry’s BioEnergy Initiative. He and his wife, Dr. Susan Watson, have two children.

William Woods, professor of English and Dean of the School of Liberal Arts at Schreiner University, came to Kerrville in 1993. He completed his BA and MA in English at Texas State University, and his PhD in English at Texas Woman’s University. His works have appeared in literary and academic journals across the country. He and his wife Stephanie Drake-Woods have three children.

If you missed the 89th Annual Banquet & Awards Dinner, held on September 1st, you missed quite an evening! With approximately 450 in attendance, the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce filled the Inn of the Hills Conference Center to wrap up the 2010-2011 Chamber year. We enjoyed a wonderful evening, recognizing the accomplishments of our organization over the past year and presenting awards to several outstanding people.

Banquet planning began back in the summer as the committee hosted auditions for “Kerrville’s Got Talent!”, with almost fifty acts auditioning. Judges Heather Cunningham, Executive Director, Playhouse 2000, David Cockerell, Executive Director, Hill Country Arts Foundation, Michael Kahl, Director, Schreiner University Choir, and Dr. Jay Dunnahoo, Conductor, Symphony of the Hills Orchestra, filled a very tall order as they chose fourteen acts to move on to a semi-final round, then four finalists for the Banquet. These four acts were given the opportunity to showcase their talent to the entire Banquet audience. Jessica Roberts, “3” (Cheyanne Saunders, Kalueb Valverde, and Allie Dinsmore), April Runcik, and Ethan Terry provided entertainment for the evening’s affair, and each member of the audience was given a ballot on which to vote for their favorite. Ethan, a local musician, went on to win the competition and a $500 cash prize!

Bob Waller, Broadway Bank and 2010-2011 Chairman of the Board, emceed the evening, celebrating the achievements of several outstanding individuals with the following awards. Jeff Talarico-Wells Fargo Advisors, was named winner of the Jack Fournier Ambassador of the Year Award. Kristy Vandenberg, American Red Cross-Hill Country Chapter, was named Kerr County Women’s Chamber Woman of the Year. Dr. Lena Rippstein was presented with the Health Care Industry Leadership Award. The Hill Country Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America were named the Mary C. Williams Volunteers of the Year Award. Denny Foster, Owner of Lemon Tree Cleaners, was named Business Person of the Year. Warren Ferguson was named the Kerrville Daily Times/Bill Dozier Citizen of the Year.

The evening culminated with Bob Waller passing the gavel to the incoming Chairman, Mark Tuschak with Schreiner University. The Banquet audience also enjoyed a “Year in Review” slideshow, a celebration of the accomplishments of the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce over the past year.

Of course, the evening wouldn’t have been the show that it was without the outstanding women and men who make up our Banquet committee: Traci Bond (Chairwoman), Betty Hughey, Marysue Douville, Kim Clarkson, Tammi Clanton, Linda Garrett, Kacy Smith, and Jeff Talarico. Executive Producers of this year’s event were Schreiner University, Wells Fargo Bank, Guadalupe National Bank, and Bank of the Hills. We earnestly hope to see you next year!
