Principal’s Report

Presentations to VCE Students

On Wednesday Year 12 students from Kerang, Cohuna and Barham participated in the TIS Tour and Looking

after Our Mates, and Year 11s had Fit 2 Drive and AFL Taking the Tackle: Respect is for Everyone presentations.

The first provided Year 12 students with information about tertiary placement and what is available to them. The

second presentation was about keeping students safe and looking out for the dangers to them and their mates.

Year 11 students learned about safe driving habits and changing attitudes and behaviour—not just their driving

skills. All presentations went very well, and once again I am proud of our student behaviour when representing the

school. The presenters commented to staff on a number of occasions how well behaved the students were.

Thanks to all staff involved, and especially Miss Ferrier and Mr Henry for their organisation.

Mobile Phone Policy

At the moment the school mobile phone policy is working well with no “spikes” in issues surrounding the use of

mobile phones at school. However, I would remind you that if students bring their phone to school, it is their

responsibility. I have seen students kicking the football, take their phones out of their pocket and leave them lying

around on the ground. Increasingly, we are seeing issues come into the school from mobile phone usage outside

of school and on weekends. Students, you need to be aware that what you send provides a permanent record of

your conversations for anyone to follow up. Another point I would like to bring to your attention is that once this

to-ing and fro-ing begins, it often rapidly escalates, with neither party getting respite 24/7. This creates a very

toxic environment for those concerned.

‘Hoodies’

A large number of students are wearing ‘hoodies’ under their school jumper. This is not part of the school

uniform, and if parents could assist in ensuring their children do not come to school wearing a ‘hoodie’, this would

be appreciated. It is cold and the students are trying to keep warm, and the school has nothing against students

wearing layers to keep warm, but we ask that they not include a ‘hoodie’. Also, there are good quality jackets for

sale at the Uniform Store which are starting to gain popularity amongst the students, as they look great and are

very warm.

VCE Parent Teacher Interviews

These were conducted on Wednesday and provided an opportunity for students and parents to see how they are

progressing. It is always a positive experience, as students receive feedback on their strengths and areas for

improvement. At the end of the day student outcomes can only improve. If you were unable to attend the evening

and would like to speak to a teacher, please phone the school to arrange a time.

Senior School Matters Fit 2 Drive

Year 11 Students were involved in a workshop designed to support them to make good decisions when faced with risky

driving situations, both as passengers, and in terms of their future driving safety. F2D is about changing attitudes and

behaviours - not their driving skills. Using active learning methods, students were asked to draw upon their own experiences, to develop a

respect and pride for safe road use. The road to empowerment was fostered through small group facilitation undertaken by specially trained

tertiary undergraduates.

Looking After Our Mates

Meanwhile, Year 12 students were involved in the Looking After Our Mates program which builds on the F2D Workshop and together

with Keys Please helps to prepare young people to be safer road users. The session focused on responsible consumption of alcohol and

strategies to avoid drink driving. The session explored a range of drink and drug driving road safety issues that are relevant to young

people. Each of the programs were delivered by Malcom Politt and his team from VicRoads and Andrew Downes from Victoria Police.

AFL Taking the Tackle

Andrew Downes engaged the Year 11 students in a forum called Taking the Tackle: Respect is for Everyone. The session informed

students about equality and the issue of violence against women. This is an AFL and Vic-Health initiative designed to educate students,

make them aware of the law, coping strategies and what to look out for.

TIS Tour

After a hearty sausage lunch Year 12s were involved in the annual Tertiary Information Session. The tour involved representatives from

VTAC, the Victorian Universities and some TAFE and Private Colleges had staff and a display of information for students to take away

with them.

Interested in being a plumber? (and keen to leave school) Certificate II in Plumbing (pre-apprenticeship) Course overview Certificate II in Plumbing (pre-apprenticeship) at Bendigo TAFE is a full time course for 14 weeks with a pathway to lead into an apprenticeship with credits for units that are delivered during the course. This course will prepare graduates with the skills and knowledge for entry level into an apprenticeship. Organised work placement is also provided to enhance employment opportu-nities.

Where - Bendigo Charleston Road Campus

Duration -Full time over 14 weeks including work placement with a licenced plumber for 10 of these weeks.

Course prerequisites - There are no prerequisites for entry into this course.

Loddon Mallee Region Basketball Finals, Echuca—July 23rd The KTHS Senior Basketball team consisting of Mitch Booth, Cooper Condely, Gavin Cathie, Jordan Lehmann, Rylan

Hipworth, Jessie Ellis, Will Copland and Jack Daglish headed to Echuca stadium to take on some very strong teams in the

Loddon Mallee Regional Finals.

After not picking up a basketball since March, the team got off to a slow start losing to Catholic College Bendigo 43-22. In

the second game against Mildura Senior, the KTHS team overcame a slow start to push their highly fancied opponents.

Unfortunately, the boys ran out of time and went down 55-46. The third game saw the team up by 2 at half time, but due to a

long day and some tiring players, St Augustine's were able to over run Kerang 42-49.

A great team effort provided some outstanding play, our transition from defence to offence and vice versa improved

throughout the day.

Although results didn’t go our way on the day, a steady improvement during the day and a strong competitive streak shown

by the students ensured entertaining basketball against much bigger opponents. All of the students should be proud of their

efforts on the day and they should be commended for their exceptional representation of our School

Best players on the day from a very even performance were Mitch Booth, Cooper Condely and Will Copland.

Loddon Mallee Region Netball Finals, Echuca—July 23rd KTHS Intermediate Netball team also travelled to the Loddon Mallee Region Finals last Thursday. The team consisted of

our captains Jorja McDonald and Jasmine Morris, and Jaymee Williams, Ashlye Faulkner, Morgan Keating, Madison Hall,

Sophie Martins, Cate Short, Elise O’Brien, and our ever reliable scorer, Lauren Adams.

Our first game was against Rochester Secondary College. The girls got off to a slow start but came back from one goal down

at half time to win by two goals (15-13). We faced much taller and stronger opposition in our second and third games going

down to Catholic College Bendigo 18-6, and St Joseph College Mildura 27-9. Our final game against MEC was our most

successful for the day. The girls played exceptionally well and allowed numerous opportunities for our goalers to put the

score on the board; final score Kerang 23 defeated MEC 10.

The ten girls are to be commended for their work ethic, sportsmanship and ability to adapt to playing in positions they are

less familiar with. Best players on the day were Morgan Keating and Jasmine Morris.

Congratulations to the girls who finished 3rd overall.

Inter-House Athletics Carnival—Wednesday, 19th August All students are expected to be at school for the Inter-House Athletics Carnival. Students are expected to wear their House colours, and suitable sports attire if they are competing in events. Students are expected to behave in an appropriate manner, at all times during the Carnival. Photographs may be taken during the events, for use in school publications or publicity. If you do not wish your child to be photographed please contact the school.

Students in Years 7-9 have compulsory High Jump over the next two weeks in PE and are reminded to bring their PE uniform.

If you are aware that your child will not be attending due to illness, injury or other legitimate commitments, please contact the school as early as possible, to assist with organisation.

ENGLISH NEWS There are a heap of writing competitions open to students, any student who would like to enter please see Ms Brewster as soon as possible.

Red Room Poetry Education inspires students and their teachers to create, perform and publish poetry. It is a free poetry writing competition for students and teachers. Red Room Poetry Object invites young writers and their teachers to submit poems about objects that hold special significance to them.

Heywire is run by the ABC where regional students aged 16-22 tell their story about what it is like to live in

regional areas.

Country to Canberra is an essay competition where the winner travels to Canberra to meet

with inspiring mentors. The title of the essay is :

In 500 words or less : If you were Prime Minister for a day, what would you do to help achieve

gender equality?

Latrobe University has a writing competition open to Year 10 students where they enter a short creative piece on

the theme: Home.

Tournament of Minds is a challenge solving competition is open to Years 7 – 10 students who are required to solve a challenge and perform a presentation of 10 minutes in one of the following methods: Applied Technology; Language & Literature; Social Sciences; Maths and Engineering. Any students who are interested in this competition, please see Ms Brewster as soon as possible.

Debating KTHS is looking for Senior, Middle and Junior school debaters to be involved in competition in

August.

SHARNI FERRARI—Girls’ Football On a Saturday Sharni plays netball with the Kerang Football Netball Club in B Reserve, but on Sundays she puts on her

footy boots and plays a game of footy. The Woorinen Football Club placed a Girls’ Youth team in Bendigo Junior

Football League and Sharni was lucky enough to be a part of this new adventure with this fabulous group of girls,

coaches, trainers and supporters. They met each other on a Tuesday afternoon back in April and did their first

training together, and then they played on that Sunday and won. They have all improved so much throughout the season

with their skills and knowledge of the game. We are certainly very proud of this group of girls.

The Woorinen Youth Girls’ team is currently sitting in 5th place on the ladder in the BJFL. They have 3 games left for

the season before the finals. During June, Sharni and 2 other girls from her team were lucky enough to be given a

chance to play in the 2015 “La Trobe University” Academy Challenge. Our girls played for AFL Central Victoria against

AFL Barwon. Sharni is currently the leading goal kicker for the BJFL. She has kicked a massive 35 goals for her first

season of football. She shows fantastic potential to go further with her football adventure. Women’s football is

growing at a very fast pace with the aim to have a women’s football team affiliated with every AFL team in the next

couple of years.

We encourage any girls interested in playing football to get along next year and put their name down with Woorinen

Youth Girl’s football team. Our long term goal is to set up our own Girls’ Football League within our own League and we

can’t do this without support of our local football clubs.

KTHS Girls’ Football Team Later this term we are planning a girls football match for years 9 – 12 against Cohuna to be hosted at Cohuna. If, after reading this article about

Sharni’s successes your daughter/s feel inspired to pull on the footy boots

themselves, encourage them to see Miss Cocking, Ms Pearce or Ms Williams

for more information.

UNIFORM STORE NEWS The Uniform Store is open every Tuesday at lunchtime (12.50pm - 1.35pm) and after school (3.30pm - 4.45pm). If you cannot makes these times, and urgently need uniforms please contact the our Uniform Co-ordinator, Gail McKenzie on 0409 961 349 to organise an alternative day and time.

Woolworths Earn and Learn KTHS is once again participating in the Woolworths ‘Earn and Learn’ stickers promotion. Boxes have

been placed at the office and at the front of the store. We would appreciate it if you would collect

stickers when you shop and pop them in either of the boxes.

Last year we collected 17,000 stickers which enabled us to gain valuable resources for our school.

Adolescents on Social Media… A Guide for Parents has been developed by Jamie Roberts (who many of you know from his

Photograph and The Impression That You Get cyber safety films).

What the series covers...

About the Presenter: Jamie Roberts, Youth Worker and Cyber Safety Advocate has presented social media workshops for

parents at many schools that aim to assist them to better understand the allure of social media for young people, and

what strategies they can use to ensure their adolescent children stay safe, protect their online reputations, and avoid

conflict or bullying online.
