Happy New Year, KOW Pilots,

When the New Year comes around, a blunt reality faces us. Like it or not, a whole new calendar is waiting to be filled. And like it or

not, it will be overfilled without your doing it intentionally. The only way to make sense of this fresh start is to take charge of it

and rule the day. Now is a good time to plan a personal budget for the year and work in those mini-vacations you said you were

going to do last year. And if you are lucky, maybe you can have a big getaway. It won’t happen if you don’t plan, and then steer a

true course ever. I hope at least one of those will be to a Pilot Convention, District or International.

I encourage you to continue to spread the word about Pilot. Have you looked at our PilotKOW.org website recently? We are going

to add your newsletters now, if you send them to us in PDF format. See Publication Specialist Mary Ellen Pfeil’s article in this issue.

Are you getting your Pilot Log? You should have received a print copy for Fall 2015 in October. If you have not received it, please

have your Portalbuzz person check with headquarters. Your paid membership includes your Pilot Log subscription. In this fall issue

is a great story about a successful Anchor member from KOW District. After graduation from Ravenswood High School (WV) where

Meghan Francis was an Anchor, she went on to college. On her own, she contacted Pilot headquarters about a scholarship. They

were able to give her one because she did not have

a Pilot club near her school. She has done research

in an Alzheimer’s lab at University of Iowa and now

is finishing her Master’s degree in Public Health.

What we do with youth through Anchor and other

programs today nurtures them for a lifetime. All

efforts you make to establish and build Anchor clubs

will be worth your time. I encourage you to work on

it. Ask Shannon Hill, Anchor appointee, for guidance

in starting a club.

From Governor-Elect Jackie “The New Year stands before us, like a

chapter in a book, waiting to be written.

We can help write that story by setting

goals.” Melodie Beattie

As we approach the New Year, we are reminded that a new chap-

ter in our lives is about to be written. Only we can write our story.

Each chapter is a day in our lives & the goal for each day should be

to make it the best day of our lives.

It has been my pleasure to meet with clubs and members. I have

learned so much from each of you and I ask that each of you con-

tinue to share your knowledge and experience to help us to con-

tinue to set goals for our district that will improve the district, clubs

and members. As we move forward into the last half of this Pilot

Year, we not only need to continue to work on the goals we had

set; but also to set new goals.

I am still in need of appointees for the Membership & Projects

Committees for next year. I will be contacting members to see if

they would be interested. Both committees don’t require a lot of

time. If you are interested in volunteering, please let me know as

soon as you can.

The DAC will be meeting in January with the Pilot Club of Jackson

County to work on the District Convention. We are looking for-

ward to a fun and exciting convention. Please make sure you mark

your calendars for April 22-24, 2016. You won’t want to miss it.

month to the president of each club. To get

information into the Bulletin:

Include contact information for the sender.

Send it electronically in one of these formats:

Flyers: PDF files

Due date is the 20th of the previous month.

Note: Photos will be used only if requested, and

will be cropped as needed. Copy will be edited for

grammar, spelling, etc., and to fit available space.

Presidents: please pass the bulletins on to club

members, preferably within 3-5 days.

the Club Quarterly Reports. We will re-evaluate

the reports and keep all Clubs informed as to any

Chaplain’s Column

At this time of year, when it's cold and windy

and maybe snowing outside, it's nice to stay

inside where it's warm and cozy. We read and

watch TV, play games on our iPad, have a snack,

or do all of these things at the same time. I'll bet

that there's a dog or cat close; on your lap or at

your feet, but somewhere nearby. Google says

that there are 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 mil-

lion cats owned in the United States: 37% - 47%

of all households have a dog and 30%-37% have

a cat. Dogs are the pet of choice in more than 43

million American homes. Animals are more

popular than ever. There are numerous rescue

groups on television asking for donations, there

are commercials with animals talking, doing

stunts, and dressed in all types of costumes.

I purchased a book entitled Random Acts of

Kindness by Animals by Stephanie LaLand and

would like to share a story that will warm your

heart. Bo, a Labrador retriever, and Duchess, a

puppy, were rafting down the Colorado River

with their humans, Laurie and Bob Rob-

erts. Suddenly, a wave toppled the raft, pin-

ning Laurie and Bob underneath the water. Bo

struggled free, but realizing that Laurie was still

underneath, he dove back under the raft for her

and pulled her out by her hair. Gasping for air,

Laurie made it to the surface. She grabbed Bo's

tail and the strong dog pulled her through the

dangerous currents to the shore.

Happy New Year!

May 2016 bring you much happiness, good health, and success! January

is a great time to focus on leadership. Have you ever considered serving

as an officer on any level? If not, why not? Having capable and commit-

ted leaders is essential to a successful organization. Take a look around…

future leaders are all around you. Pilot International needs passionate

leaders who are willing to help take the organization to the next level.

Consider nominating a qualified Pilot for district officer, or better yet, for

an International office. Are you that qualified member or do you know a

qualified member? If so, nominate them!

Planning is underway for the 2016 Pilot International Convention and

Leadership Conference in Montreal, Canada. This year’s convention

promises to be exciting and entertaining. There will be many

opportunities for training on all levels. It is a perfect chance to make new

friends and spend time with Pilots you have met along the way. Check

your passport to make sure it is current. Check the Pilot International

website for registration information.

Pilot International Founders Fund would like to remind everyone to be

sure to get your club contributions submitted by February 1 to Pilot

International headquarters in order to be recognized at District

Convention as well as International Convention. These contributions

support the programs and services brought to you by Pilot International.

A Special Request from our District Publications Specialist...

This is a call for increased participation in the District Newsletter Competition. All Pilot Clubs with newsletters are encouraged to submit a minimum of three issues for the District Newsletter awards. The Pilot Clubs of Jackson County, Huntington, Greater Stark County, and Charleston are already entered in the competition. Clubs wishing to participate can do so by emailing issues to the district webmaster, David Lemming, ([email protected]). The deadline for submission is Thursday, March 31, 2016.

The entered newsletters will be posted on the website for everyone to see. This is a particularly great advantage to the person who may be surfing the district website and may have an interest in a local club. Your newsletter may draw potential members when they are impressed with the descriptions of club activities. Furthermore, this is a great way for members from our clubs to see what other clubs are doing.

Though everyone can enjoy the newsletters, judging the newsletters for awards will still be the sole responsibility of the District Publication Specialist. If you have any questions about submitting club newsletters, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I look forward to seeing more clubs make new entries into this competition!

Club News…

The Pilot Club of Zanesville is working with the local Starlight Industries Program. A portion of this Starlight program is to provide

contract services that meet business requirements including training and supervision of special needs individuals, who work in the

community employed through Muskingum Starlight Industries. An employee of the month is selected by MSI. The Pilot Club of

Zanesville honors that individual with a "Pick-Me-Up," providing a certificate to the honored employee and to the business

employing the individual. The employee also receives a carnation in a vase with greenery, a "Congrats" balloon, and an attached

card with the Pilot wheel logo that reads: A Little Pick-Me-Up. A little surprise, to put a twinkle in your eyes, and to say "Thank You"

for the excellent job you do, from the Pilot Club of Zanesville. A Pilot information sheet is also given to the individual and to the

place of employment, thus spreading the word of Pilot — who we are and what we do. This presentation comes as a total surprise

to the individual, although management and other employees are aware and often gather for the presentation and picture

taking. Seeing the look on all the smiling faces puts a lump in our throats. We are happy to have made that individual’s day.

The Millennium Pilot Club started the holiday season off with a fun Saturday afternoon wrapping gifts for the residents at Twin

Valley Behavioral Healthcare (TVBH) in Columbus. Nearly 100 gifts were wrapped and we enjoyed holiday music and shared some

special holiday snacks. TVBH is an organization we have supported since our chartering, both with funds and with volunteer hours.

The Pilot Club of Akron was presented an Ambassador Award for Volunteer of the Year from The Autism Society of Greater Akron

at their Inaugural Autism Summit held at the NEOMED in Rootstown, Ohio on November 13.

The Pilot Club of Jackson County participated in the first Jackson County Oral Health Coalition Mini Golf Tournament on October

24, 2015 at Cedar Lakes. Eighteen children ages 3-12 enjoyed this morning of fun. Jenny Scholl did an outstanding job coordinat-

ing this event along with the assistance of several Pilots. Pilot members enjoyed playing a game of miniature golf at the end of the

day. Pilots participating were Jenny Scholl, Jennie Frashier, Brenda Hunt, Evelyn Weirick, Phyllis Fox, Greta Tyler, Kelly Fluty, Sandra

Summers, Carolyn Waybright, Cookey Gunther, Sandy Hoff, Suzette Lowe, Cheryl Marshall, Sue Overmiller, and Sheila Randolph.

A message to Club Presidents

from our District PIFF Rep… If your Club has not yet done so, now is the time to think of applying for a

grant from Pilot International. You have until October 31.

If you have applied you will be notified on or around January 31 of the grant’s approval or denial. More details are on the Pilot In-

ternational website, www.pilotinternational.org at Resources/Founders Fund or by calling 478-477-1208, ext. 300.

Pilot International Founders Fund matching grants are available for: Anchors: Youth Development & Leadership Brain Safety & Fitness Caring for Families in Times of Need Any Pilot Club may apply. Just remember: you do not send your application to the District. Your Club President and Club PIFF Rep-resentative sign you request. Grant Application Timetable October 15 Postmark/Timestamp deadline for grant applications to be sent via mail or email to headquarters. January 31 Checks for approved grants are mailed and notices of denial are sent October 31 Grant Evaluation due to headquarters nine months after grant is approved. Grant Application Categories You must determine which of the Pilot ABCs is the category your request is most qualified for and complete the grant request ac-cording to the specifications of that category. Anchors: Youth Development & Leadership The purpose of Pilot’s service is to be fully committed to the promotion and encouragement of Youth Development and Leader-ship, especially through our Anchor Clubs. Service may include, but is not limited to: • Creating, promoting, supporting, and sustaining quality service initiatives in Anchor Clubs • Supporting leadership development opportunities for Anchor Clubs Brain Safety & Fitness Pilot's service focus is to promote awareness of brain safety and fitness and to improve the lives of those affected by brain illness or injury through education, prevention programs, volunteer activities, financial support, and research. This may include but is not limited to: • Prevention of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and support of TBI camps • BrainMinders: Keeping brains safe • Safety Fairs and Bicycle Rodeos • Healthy lifestyle programs to keep brains safe (healthy eating, drug/alcohol awareness, exercise) Caring for Families in Times of Need Caring for Families in Times of Need may include but is not limited to: • Creating Pick Me Ups to support community caregivers (Caregiver Recognition Luncheon with special speaker or by recognizing a group of caregivers at a specific location) • Providing equipment for Assisted Living or Hospice Facility Emergency and Response Providers • Supporting any program that helps families in need • Developing a program to kick off International Care and Kindness Week • Sponsoring a weekly respite club for caregivers in the community.
