The rescheduled 2020 race, however, WILL NOT BE OPEN TO SPECTATORS. Churchill Downs announced on Aug. 21 that, given increases in the number of COVID-19 cases in Louisville, the Derby would be run without fans in attendance. Derby spectators are know for wearing SPECTACULAR HATS on race day. While the tradition may not be carried on in person this year, many fans will be sporting their extravagant pieces while watching the race at home. The last Derby winner who had lost his previous two attempts at Churchill was Real Quiet (1998), who entered the Run for the Roses 0-for-3. TIZ THE LAW, the Belmont Stakes winner in June, has won six of seven career starts, by a combined margin of 24 3/4 lengths. His only loss came at Churchill last fall in the Kentucky Jockey Club. Bob Baffert goes for a record-tying sixth Derby victory, and AUTHENTIC’s high cruising speed makes him a threat. Baffert has a second shot with THOUSAND WORDS.
