Abstract
Rapidly receding natural resources and ecological destruction, as a result of growing cities, cause countries to address urgent action strategies within the framework of sustainable development policies. And in cities that receive rapid and intense migration due to employment, but fail to live up to the same level of planned development, the problem is much more serious. Unplanned development, causing irreversible damage to the natural sources feeding urban life, while threatening basins, coastal areas and all remaining natural areas, the pressure that spatial development dynamics create in natural thresholds, gives urgency to the issue of the control of urban sprawl. In order to create local perceivable differences regarding sustainability, the final point that we've reached today is the urbanization process based on Smart Growth. To main principles can be mentioned at this point; the first is to increase and improve environmental

quality and environmental activities in the city, to create environmental efficiency; and the second is to reduce the environmental load. This condition that requires consideration of local conditions in terms of climate, environment, energy, culture, society and economics, ensures the creation of helping tools that moderate the intrusion of urban environments and perform management in a smaller scale. Certification systems that are rapidly expanding globally, for the green urban space design and applications, are one of those. Comprehensive environmental assessment systems like the one that was formed by the German Sustainable Building Council, under DGNB, as DGNB_NSQ, especially for the new development areas; BREEAM's BREEAM_Communities, formed by BREEAM, the green building certificate system, popular in Europe, especially in England, to create difference and awareness, in the scale of urban design, for environmental, social, economic sustainability; aim to create innovative solutions in the scale of urban areas, with their smart growth, urbanization and green building principles. As context of this report, the principles that the mentioned certificate systems defined, will be evaluated generally, and their correspondence with the Smart Growth principles will be discussed, and the topic of opportunities that performance evaluation offers for correct urbanization will be tackled.
