KENAKENA SCHOOL FESTIVAL OF FUN THIS
SATURDAY!
By now you will be aware of the massive gala day being organised
by the Kenakena
School Parent Network, the Kenakena School Festival of Fun!
You have been sent regular updates requesting your support of
the festival and,
therefore of your children’s school.
The Festival of Fun is a recent initiative (from 2013) by the
School-Parent Network to
raise funds to support the programmes and resources that support
your children’s
learning.
mailto:[email protected]:[email protected]://www.kenakena.school.nz/
-
The money the school receives from the Ministry of Education
through an annual
Operations Grant is insufficient for running the range and
quality of programmes we
run at Kenakena. Once the operational costs of running the
school and maintaining
property are met, the remainder is used for programmes and
resources.
So, please support the School Parent Network in the running of
this event. Please do
not be apathetic! We’re all working very hard to provide
programmes and resources
for your kids. Please get involved by offering your assistance
or by responding to
requests for support.
SEE YOU THERE!
CAULFIELD JUNIOR COLLEGE WELCOME POWHIRI
Fifteen students from Caulfield Junior College in Melbourne
arrived in Kapiti yesterday
ready to spend a week hosted by Kenakena families. The students,
who are
accompanied by teachers Leora Yates and Isabella Parigi, were
welcomed to
Kenakena at a whole school powhiri (Maori welcome) this
morning.
-
During their week here their learning experiences include the
Weta Cave, Kapiti Island,
The World War One Exhibition at the old War Memorial Museum and
Pataka Museum,
as well as harakeke (Maori flax weaving) and spending time in
classrooms.
The Melbourne Exchange Students at the beach today
Kenakena’s connection to Caulfield Junior College goes back to
2002.
ROOM 1 CHILDRENS’ RECOUNTS OF THE POWHIRI
In the powhiri it was loud. The children in the front were doing
kapahaka. The speech was
very long. Mr McDonald was pulling Caulfield Junior college in
to Kenakena School. It was
nice to be there to see them.
Mikayla Sears (Y2)
Today we had a powhiri to bless the children from Australia. The
men did speeches and we
sung songs.

TEACHER ONLY DAY
-
A reminder that our annual School Review and Planning Day takes
place next Friday,
November 11. It is on this day that we review our 2016
operations and begin the
planning process for 2017.
This year our focus is on reviewing learning projects and
professional development
and focussing on where these areas will go in 2017.
By beginning this process now and devoting un-interrupted time
to it, we can begin
next year very well prepared.
Why does Kenakena School have Teacher Only Days?
The teaching team needs opportunities for corporate professional
development and for
organisational planning and review. These opportunities are
essential for enhancing
organizational effectiveness and professional practice.
When do we have teacher only days?
Teacher only days are held during the school holidays and during
the school term. This year,
one teacher only day was held during the Christmas Holidays, one
will take place on
November 11. When teacher only days are held during the school
term we plan them for the
day prior to, or directly after a weekend. When the school is
closed for a teacher only day,
the time is made up either through out-of-normal-school-time
activities that the children are
involved in or by adding a day onto the end of the school
year.
Why aren't all teacher only days held during the school
holidays?
Teachers are already involved in organised work-related
activities during the school holidays;
team planning meetings, management team meetings, professional
development courses,
meetings with parents, resource organization meetings and time
spent on work planning and
assessment for the teaching programmes. In addition to this,
teachers are often required to
attend night-time meetings and work during weekends. On days
such as the school's Festival
of Fun gala day teachers came to work on a Saturday. They also
come at night to help
supervise discos and on overnight school camps they are working
twenty-four hours per day.
Teaching is a very rewarding but highly demanding job, and
teachers need time to refresh
before the beginning of each term.
If we are getting professional education consultants to work
with our teaching staff, we have
to go with school-term dates if that’s when they are available.
It is impractical and hugely
expensive to hire relief teachers for the entire teaching
staff.

2017 ENROLMENTS
We are in the process of planning for 2017. If you have a child
starting school as a
five-year-old next year and haven’t yet informed us, please
contact Lynda at the school
office to let us know.
If you have friends, workmates, relatives or acquaintances who
are intending to enrol
their children at Kenakena in 2017, please encourage them to get
in touch.

2017 KAHIKATEA CAMP HELPERS
We had a wonderful response from parents volunteering to join us
on the Kahikatea
Camp in Term one 2017. We had 26 parents keen to participate and
we could only
-
accommodate 12. We know that there are many disappointed parents
but
unfortunately we could not accept all offers of help.
The majority of the names were drawn from a hat in order to be
as fair as possible to
everyone.
We desperately need all offers of transport to get students to
Kaitoke Camp and hope
those parents that were not successful are still willing to
support us with this. There
will be a donation to help cover petrol costs.
Thank you,
Kahikatea Team Teachers
BOOK FAIR
The Scholastic Book Fair will be open in the library each day
before and after
school and lunchtimes from Thursday 17th November until Friday
25th
November. There will be a lovely selection of books, so come and
browse.
It’s a good opportunity to purchase books for Christmas gifts or
holiday
reading.
Remember that 20% of the money spent comes back to the school in
the way of more
beautiful books for our own library.

TIPS FOR PARENTS
Let children feel
their feelings
Too simple? This is actually really
hard to do because as parents we
are wired to push our kids through
their feelings to get them to act
braver, kinder, more self-controlled
or compliant. Letting children feel
their feelings, helping them
name them and sitting with them is
not immediately natural for parents
to do. Going in a new direction will
feel a little uncharted at first, but it
will be well worth it in the long run.
