Message from the President

Keio University is a private general education institution which was first opened as a

school for Dutch learning by Japanese educator and visionary, Yukichi Fukuzawa, in 1858.

In its more than 150 year history, Keio University has been nurturing individuals who have

the ability to think for themselves based on an education grounded in practical learning.

Keio’s approximately 320,000 graduates are successful worldwide at the core of society in

various areas including business and politics. As of May 2009, there are 1053 international

students studying at Keio and the university has over 200 exchange agreements with

universities and higher education institutions around the world.

Keio offers an environment for international students to have a meaningful student

experience through both a range of classes and degree courses taught in English

and double degree programs aimed at developing global leaders.

Keio warmly welcomes applications from students with a spirit of independence and

self-respect and the drive to make a contribution to society.

塾長からのメッセージ慶應義塾は、日本の啓蒙家、教育者である福澤諭吉が1858年に開いた家塾を起源とする私立総合大学です。150年を越える歴史の中で、慶應義塾は常に「実学」を教育の基本に据え、自分の頭で考えることのできる人間を育成してきました。約32万人の卒業生は、世界の経済や政治など社会の中枢で活躍しています。2009年5月時点において、慶應義塾で学ぶ外国人留学生は1,053人、世界各国約200にわたる大学・高等教育機関との交流協定を基礎にして活発な国際交流を展開しています。また、慶應義塾では英語による授業や英語による学位課程を相当数設けているだけでなく、国際社会のリーダーを育成するダブルディグリー・プログラムを複数用意するなど、海外からの学生の皆さんが有意義で充実した学生生活を送ることのできる学習環境を整えています。独立自尊の自己と社会を実現する意欲ある皆さんの入学を慶應義塾は心より歓迎いたします。

今に受け継がれる、志と教育理念自らの判断・責任のもとに行動する「独立自尊」の心や、固定観念にとらわれず、科学的に物事を見つめる「実学」の精神。また、「天は人の上に人を造らず、人の下に人を造らず」という冒頭で知られる著書『学問のすゝ め』で説いた、人間の自由・平等・学び続けることの大切さ。創立者・福澤諭吉の志と理念は、今も脈々と受け継がれています。

Over 150 years since Keio's founding as a school for Dutch learningIn 1858, renowned scholar Yukichi Fukuzawa opened a school for Dutch learning in Edo(present-day Tokyo). Having traveled in Europe and the United States, Fukuzawa established the foundation of modern education in Japan, free from the traditional values and practices of society. In 1868 the school was expanded and renamed Keio Gijuku after the era name of that time, “Keio”. The school began to offer university education in 1890, and Keio took its place as Japan's foremost comprehensive university. The university has expanded to include 10 faculties and 14 graduate schools, and in 2008 it celebrated its 150th anniversary. Founder Yukichi Fukuzawa, a pioneer of modern Japan, is pictured on the 10,000-yen note, the country's highest denomination. The institution he founded continues to provide leadership for the future.

Fukuzawa's vision and philosophy are as relevant as everFounder Yukichi Fukuzawa believed in self-respect and independence of mind, in thinking for oneself and taking responsibility for one's actions. He instilled a spirit of practical learning, of approaching endeavors scientifically without preconceived ideas. In his major work, An Encouragement of Learning, which famously begins, "Heaven never created a man above another nor a man below another", Fukuzawa emphasized the importance of freedom, equality, and lifelong learning. His vision and philosophy still resonate today.

蘭学塾に始まる、150年の歴史

1858年、福澤諭吉は江戸（現在の東京）に蘭学塾を開きました。その後、欧米諸国を歴訪した福澤は、古いしきたりや慣習にとらわれない近代教育の基礎を確立。1868年、学塾体制を充実させるとともに、日本における時の年号・慶應にちなんで慶應義塾と命名しました。1890年には大学部を開設し、日本の総合大学の先駆けとして常に時代をリードしてきた慶應義塾。現在では10学部・14研究科を擁する大学へと成長し、2008年、創立150年を迎えました。日本の最高額紙幣である一万円札に肖像が使われるほど、広く知られ、高く評価されている福澤諭吉。近代日本の先導者によって誕生した、慶應義塾の「未来への先導」は続きます。

An international perspective at the vanguard ofuniversity education in JapanTo foster world-class education and research, Keio appointed three American professors as its first heads of department. Ever since, international programs based on a global world-view have remained one of Keio's key tenets. Today, in keeping with its policy of creating an open and global university, Keio takes a leading role in the internationalization of university education throughout Japan.

Seasonal diversity and traditional festivities

The ever-changing face of nature is another of Japan's attractions. In spring, people flock to view the cherry trees as in ages past. Japan's earliest poetry anthology, the Man`yo-shu, describes banquets where people caroused, sang and danced while appreciating the beauty of cherry or plum blossoms. The performing arts also have a long lineage in Japan. As well as those with their origins in festivals and rituals connected with court ceremonies and rice cultivation, Japanese performing arts extend into literature (tanka and haiku), theater (noh and kabuki), and artistic accomplishments (tea ceremony and ikebana).

Centuries-old Japanese treasuresLegend has it that Japan was founded when the first Emperor Jimmu ascended the throne in 660 BCE. The unique culture developed throughout Japan's long history has been carefully preserved and passed down. Some 14 natural and historic places and buildings are listed as World Heritage sites. Among them are the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, which include the Phoenix Hall at Byodo-in Temple, pictured above. The architectural and garden styles that are a feature of Japan's cultural traditions still influence the world today, over 12 centuries since their beginnings.

四季の恵み、祭りの伝承四季折々の自然の表情も日本の魅力です。例えば春には、桜の名所に人々が集い、遊び楽しむ文化が連綿と受け継がれています。日本最古の歌集「万葉集」などにも、梅や桜の花を観ながら宴を開き、飲食や歌舞を楽しむ様子が描かれています。また、古くからの芸能や娯楽も数多く伝承されています。朝廷儀式や稲作文化にまつわる祭事や神事から生まれた芸能のほか、文芸（短歌や俳句）、演劇（能楽や歌舞伎）、芸道（茶道や華道）など、その分野は多岐にわたります。

時を越えて愛される日本の宝日本は、紀元前660年、神武天皇の即位により建国されたと言われています。長い歴史の中で培われた独自の文化は、大切に守られ、受け継がれてきました。世界遺産に認定されている、自然や遺跡、建築物も14件にのぼります。写真の平等院鳳凰堂を含む、京都の文化財もその一つ。日本の文化的伝統を象徴する建築・庭園様式は、1200年の時を越え、今も世界に影響を与え続けています。

New ideas and technology embodied in the eco-carWith the problem of global warming now a world-wide issue, much is expected of Japanese environmental technology. One of the more promising developments is the eco-car. In 2004, Professor Hiroshi Shimizu and his team at Keio's Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, working on their own ideas over many years, created something groundbreaking: the Eliica, or Electric Lithium Ion battery car. Instead of a conventional gasoline engine, this electric supercar has in-wheel motors that provide both superior environmental performance and a top speed of 370km/h. In the Eliica, concept and technology come together to protect the environment while providing smooth acceleration and a comfortable ride.

assumed to be example of safe super-high-speed train. Robot that stays one step ahead by two-legged locomotion and

artificial intelligence. And, the eco-friendly car attracts attention as one of the measures for controlling global warming

now. In [yoroko****juku], the electric vehicle laboratory continued an original approach for a long time before, and an

epoch-making car was invented in 2004. It is "[Eri-ka] (Eliica=Electric Li-ion Battery Car). " in the photograph. It is a

super-electric vehicle to make them unite the driving performance of the surprise (an excellent environmental perfor-

mance and 370km highest per hour).

The mind of the world is moved, and it is natural with a beautiful culture.

ボット。そして今、地球温暖化対策の一つとして、エコカーが注目を集めています。慶應義塾では、電気自動車研究室がずっと以前から独自の取り組みを続け、

2004年に画期的な車を生み出しました。それが、写真の「エリーカ（Eliica＝Electric Li-ion Battery Car）」。優れた環境性能と、最高時速370kmという

驚きの走行性能を両立させた、スーパー電気自動車です。

Major contribution to development of the space stationIn addition to traditions and natural beauty, Japan boasts many world-class technologies. At the forefront of these is space development technology. Through the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Japan has played a major role in developing the Japanese Experiment Module (Kibo) for the International Space Station (ISS) project, in which 15 countries including the United States and Russia are participating. Japan's unmanned cargo craft H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV) has been successfully docked to the ISS. Missions flown by Japanese astronauts are increasingly important. The two astronauts pictured above, Chiaki Mukai and Akihiko Hoshide, launched their careers from Keio University. The knowledge and spirit of Keio University extend into outer space!

宇宙ステーションに、大きな貢献伝統や自然の一方で、日本には世界に誇る技術が数多くあります。その最先端を象徴するのが、宇宙開発技術です。米国やロシアをはじめ、15カ国が参加して建設が進められている国際宇宙ステーション（ISS）プロジェクトでも、日本はJAXA（宇宙航空研究開発機構）を中心に大きな役割を果たし、実験棟「きぼう」を開発。物資補給船（HTV＝H-II Transfer Vehicle）の宇宙ステーションへのドッキングにも成功しました。日本人宇宙飛行士のミッションもますます重要性を増していますが、写真の向井千秋さんと星出彰彦さんは、慶應義塾から羽ばたいた宇宙飛行士です。慶應義塾の知と精神は、宇宙にもつながっています。

エコカーに、新しい発想と技術地球温暖化の抑止が世界的なテーマとなる中、日本の環境技術への期待も高まっています。その一つとして注目を集めているのが、エコカーです。慶應義塾では、環境情報学部の清水浩教授を中心に、以前から独自の取り組みを続け、2004年に画期的な車を生み出しました。それが、写真の「エリーカ（Eliica＝Electric Li-ion Battery Car）」。車輪にモーターを組み込んで従来のガソリンエンジンをなくし、優れた環境性能と、最高時速370kmという走行性能を両立させたスーパー電気自動車です。Eliicaには、環境を守り、心地よい加速感で人の心も満たす発想と技術が凝縮されています。

At the cutting edge of bioscienceMany of life's mechanisms are still unknown. Elucidating the unknown offers huge potential benefits for humankind. Therein lies the real pleasure of research in the biological sciences. The motto of the Tomita research team is “Science is Ultimate Amusement”. Our students are full of curiosity and a spirit of adventure. Even students in their freshman or sophomore year are actively accepted as full-fledged researchers. Appreciating one's own countryby experiencing Japan I was born and bred in Australia. If I had not studied in Japan, I could never have understood the country as I do now, nor could I have married a Japanese wife, taught at Keio, or been appointed the Director of the International Center which administers international student affairs. My field of research is econometrics. The unique aspect of my undergraduate seminar class is that, after reviewing microeconomics, we learn how to use econometrics software, and use it for applied data analysis. I also teach students presentation skills to prepare them for their future careers. Studying overseas is a wonderful experience when you have a definite goal. Living abroad also gives you a better understanding of your own country. I invite you all to follow your aspirations by studying in Japan.

日本を通して、故郷の良さも見えてきます私はオーストラリアで生まれ育ちました。日本に留学していなければ、今のように日本を理解できなかったし、日本女性と結婚することも、慶應義塾で教えることも、留学生を担当する国際センター所長に就任することもなかったと思います。専門は計量経済学ですが、私の研究会は、まずミクロ経済学を復習した上で計量ソフトの使い方などを学び、応用・実証分析を行うのがユニークなところ。就職後を見すえて、プレゼンテーション能力も養います。しっかりとした目的を持てば、留学はとてもいい体験になります。外国で暮らすことによって、母国のことも見えてくるものです。みなさんのチャレンジ精神を、ぜひ留学に活かしてほしいと思っています。

Vertical writing style encapsulatesthe depth of the Japanese languageJapanese is a nuanced language, traditionally written in vertical lines as a mix of Chinese and kana characters. The art of calligraphy, expressing the beauty of the characters themselves, is widely enjoyed, and reading "between the lines" to fathom meanings not made explicit in the text is second nature. This culture of vertical writing is clearly visible - in newspapers, magazines, and literary works.

I got interested in Japan through karate, which I took up to build my strength. Keen to study in Japan, I took Japanese language classes and even practiced using chopsticks at home. Of course I love Japanese food. It's amazing that what's good for your health can taste so good too! And the traditional cultural heritage is wonderful. The elaborate carvings I saw at Toshogu Shrine in Nikko seemed to embody the same attention to detail that the Japanese apply to academic study. My main reason for choosing Keio University was its well-established networks, which include alumni as well as current students. Besides obtaining a quality education, I wanted to diversify my relationships by making friends with people from all sorts of disciplines. Japan rewards the effort you put into your studies and offers great opportunities for achieving your goals. I'm really glad I chose to study in Japan.

文化も、学ぶ環境も、心を満たしてくれます　私は、体を強くするために始めた空手を通して日本に興味を持ちました。留学したくて、日本語学校に通いながら、家では箸使いも練習しました。もちろん和食は大好きです。健康にいいものが、とても美味しいことに驚きます。伝統的な文化遺産もすばらしいですね。日光の東照宮で見た細かな彫刻の数々は、細部を大切にする日本人の勉学の姿勢にも通じるような気がしました。　慶應義塾を選んだ一番の理由は、OBを含めた人のネットワークが充実していること。質の高い学力を身につけるだけでなく、いろんな学部の友人を作って人間関係を広げたかったからです。日本には、学ぶ人の努力に応えてくれる環境があり、目標を達成できる可能性が広がっています。留学して本当に良かったと思っています。

Japanese Language ProgramThe Japanese Language Program focuses on the Japanese language and Japan-related topics. It is designed to help students gain the language proficiency needed for future research in their chosen field. In addition to core subjects, the program offers language classes for improving speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, and cultural classes for deepening students' knowledge of Japanese society and culture. Students can choose classes to suit their particular needs. At advanced levels, classes for acquiring proficiency in Japanese composition and reading comprehension are available.

別科・日本語研修課程別科・日本語研修課程は、日本語と日本を研究するための講座です。将来の専門分野の研究に活かせる、日本語能力の養成を目指しています。基礎科目のほかに、「話す・聞く・読む・書く」という四技能を高める技能別科目と、日本の社会や文化の知識を深める日本文化科目を用意。一人一人の目的に合わせて、自由に選択することができます。さらに、上級段階では読解能力や文章作成能力を身につけるための教育を行っています。

Opportunities for studying Japanese cultureKeio offers subjects taught in English to foster a better understanding of Japanese culture and society, and international relations. The subjects explore Japan from many perspectives, including politics and economics, intellectual history, art and religion. With overseas students studying alongside Japanese students, classes provide a unique forum for international exchange in English. In addition, student groups and volunteer groups that support overseas students hold various events to enable first-hand experience of Japanese culture.

Scholarships and accommodationFinancial assistance is available to support overseas students wanting to study at Keio. Some scholarships can be applied for before admission, such as the "Design the Future" Award for International Students, launched in 2008. Other funding, such as government grants and Keio University scholarships, are available after admission. Keio provides university accommodation for international students, and makes every effort to assist students in their day-to-day lives.

奨学金と宿舎慶應義塾は、留学生の勉学意欲に応えるため、経済的な支援を行っています。奨学金には、2008年度に新たに設置された「未来先導国際奨学金（“Design the Future” Award for International Students）」など入学前に募集するものと、日本政府の奨学金や慶應義塾独自の奨学金など入学後に募集するものとがあります。また、留学生を対象とした宿舎も用意し、学生生活の支援に努めています。

Assistance in finding employment in JapanKeio's employment and career services are kept fully informed about employment prospects each year through the exchange of up-to-date information with personnel departments at Japanese companies. Students are counseled on an individual basis and are given appropriate advice and guidance for their particular situation. Numerous talks and employment seminars are provided by staff, graduates, and experts from outside the university. Keio gives students access to vital information to help them find jobs.

English-only degree programsKeio has focused efforts on providing English-based education and research programs to provide an accessible learning environment for overseas students. Apart from language classes, more than 180 courses are conducted in English. In addition, English-only degree programs are available in one faculty and at six graduate schools.

Media Centers (Libraries)Each of Keio University's six campuses has its own media center (library) with a particular focus and characteristics. Together they house a massive collection of some 4.6 million books and journals. These resources, together with the various academic databases and electronic journals available through digitization, provide an environment that delivers the necessary information exactly when it is needed.

Information Technology Center (ITC)Keio is equipped with high-speed networks that support maximum connection speeds of 10Gbps between campuses and 1Gbps on campus. Within the university grounds and buildings, students can access the networks any time and any place by wireless LAN. PCs and workstations are provided in classrooms and open space areas. The Information Technology Center (ITC) was set up to make this information environment easy and safe for students to use. It supports utilization of information in educational and research activities and in a host of other on-campus settings.

Admissions CenterThe Admissions Center conducts the entrance examination and other tests that may be required for admission as an international student. The Center also distributes information about Keio University through websites and pamphlets, hosts open days and presentations about the university, and handles public relations and campus visits.
