September 10, 2014 Keihin develops new NGV system for natural gas vehicles Keihin Corporation (Head office: Shinjuku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Tsuneo Tanai) has developed a new special fuel supply system for natural gas vehicles (NGV). Compared to gasoline vehicles, gas-fueled vehicles that use natural gas or similar fuel emit less greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and hazardous substances such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM). Besides, since they are relatively inexpensive, their use is increasing mainly in Southeast Asia. Being smaller and lighter, the newly developed NGV system contributes to good fuel economy of gas-fueled vehicles while maintaining a performance equivalent to or higher than that of the previous model. In addition, Keihin’s original control system allows it to be installed in various vehicle models and engines, ranging from compact vehicles to heavy duty vehicles, vehicles with a supercharger-equipped engine and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vehicles, and this also helps to reduce the cost of the entire system. Characteristics of this new NGV system NGV injector (pipe assy) World’s top-class durability and varied flow rates Size reduced by 15% and weight down by 40% with use of Keihin’s original manufacturing method *Production site: Keihin Automotive Systems India Pvt. Ltd., India Second ECU (Electronic Control Unit) Improved driving performance with cooperative control of Keihin’s original control system and existing engine ECU Sized reduced by 45% and weight down by 35% with function aggregation and high-density packaging *Production site: Keihin Auto Parts (Thailand) Co., Ltd., Thailand Pressure regulator Stable gas supply pressure even under a low temperature environment of -20°C Integration of regulating function and the solenoid cut-off valve *Production site: Miyagi No. 1 Plant, Japan Oil trap filter World’s top-class oil eliminating performance for low-quality fuel Superior layout that allows for installation in various engines *Production: Subcontractor in Japan *Twenty-nine patent applications have been made for this NGV system. Keihin will further develop this system to achieve a global share of 30% in the NGV segment in 2020. This new NGV system has started to be supplied to Honda “City CNG” released in Thailand in September as a bi-fuel system where two types of fuel, natural gas and gasoline, are used. Keihin will keep developing attractive products that are superior in environmental performance to supply them globally.
