Looking to the cloud

Having oered a hosted application service to its customers for nearly 10 years, CANCOMwas excited by the potential enhancements cloud computing could oer. It recognized thatwith increased virtualization capabilities, its Application Hosting Platform (AHP) could becomethe AHP Private Cloud, an entirely new proposition for its customers.

Carsten Pavlovits, Manager Solution Sales – System Solutions, CANCOM, explains: “We realizedthat cloud computing was not just hype but rather a change in the way of computing. CANCOMtherefore began to focus on this emerging trend early, and designed our portfolio around it.We were already well known for our client and server expertise, however the rst moveradvantage in the cloud made us even more competitive.”

Besides developing a solution for its customers, CANCOM planned to use the new cloud oeringfor its own IT environment, to demonstrate its faith in and commitment to the technology.“By doing it ourselves rst, we knew we’d then have a much stronger position from which toprovide our customers with valuable insights and consultancy about their own deployments,”says Pavlovits.

Solid foundations

Eager to ensure its new oering was based on the most appropriate platform, CANCOM choseto deploy HP ProLiant* DL380 G6 servers powered by the latest generation of Intel Xeonprocessor – beginning with the Intel® Xeon® processor 5500 series and soon upgrading tothe Intel Xeon processor 5600 series when it was subsequently released.

“We have a longstanding relationship with Intel. We’re a Gold member of the Intel® TechnologyProvider Program and almost all of our IT environment is based on Intel® architecture,” commentsPavlovits. “So, it was a simple decision for us to make use of this technology in this solution. We knew that only Intel would be able to deliver the energy eciency, performance andlong-term stability that we required. In addition to this, virtualization was to play a crucialrole in this new platform, so a processor with the power to support the consolidation ofmultiple applications and heavy workloads was essential.”

This platform now supports the AHP PrivateCloud, a multi-tenancy desktop delivery in-frastructure that offers over 50 standardapplications over a hypervisor such as VMware*,from Microsoft Office* to supply chain, enter-prise resource planning (ERP) and HR software.Specific applications can be added dependingon individual customer requirements. Userscan choose to use the service on a pay-as-you-go basis, or as a managed service witha monthly fee.

“The platform is designed to support over100,000 users and is aimed mainly at organ-izations with more than 1,000 users,” explainsPavlovits. “It’s the ability to effectively andefficiently handle a wide range of applicationsat once that appeals to them.” Interest in thesolution has been strong and many of CANCOM’scustomers are already reaping the benefits.

AL-KO Kober AG

A manufacturer of components used in theautomotive, commercial and leisure industries,AL-KO’s application servers were spread acrossEurope. It needed to modernize and consolidateits IT environment and chose to do so by mi-grating its applications to CANCOM’s AHPPrivate Cloud.

Its application servers were virtualized usingVMware as well as communication infrastruc-tures such as Microsoft Exchange* and ActiveDirectory*. These are now all accessed byemployees worldwide using the AHP Private

Cloud. Overall, approximately 2,000 usersand over 100 applications are supported.

Raymod Kober is Chairman of AL-KO, and heexplains the benefit that the new solutionhas delivered to his business: “The introduc-tion of the CANCOM AHP Private Cloud allowedus to reduce our IT operating costs by up to35 percent. In some cases new locations orcompanies can be tied into the system in justone weekend, which used to take severalweeks. Even our IT employees are now highlymotivated as they were able to take on morechallenging duties in the computer center afterbeing retrained. Implementing the CANCOMAHP Private Cloud and capitalizing on theexpertise of the CANCOM staff was a sounddecision.”

Christian Oberlander, Vice President IT-In-frastructure, AL-KO KOBER AG, adds: “TheAHP Private Cloud gives us advantages inthe IT organization as well as an enhanceduser experience. Through the AHP we areable to roll out system and application patchesand releases worldwide, multilingually, quicklyand reliably - within a few minutes. Our mobileworkers especially appreciate the opportuni-ties to securely access their work environ-ment with their own mobile devices fromanywhere.”

Growing success

These customer successes validate CANCOM’sstrategy of building services based on thecloud, and have positioned it well ahead ofcompetitors who have not yet developedsuch offerings. As its customer base for theAHP Private Cloud grows, the organization isnot only able to access new revenue streams, but can also encourage greater loyalty amongexisting customers, thanks to the wider rangeof IT services and consultancy that it canoffer.

“Our collaboration with Intel and ongoing useof the Intel Xeon processor family in theplatform have contributed significantly to thehigh quality and success of the AHP PrivateCloud,” concludes Pavlovits. “We plan to con-tinue working with Intel on other projects, and are currently investigating the possibilityof offering our customers a remote manage-ment service based on Intel® Core™ vPro™processor technology.”
