KCIC – Sustainability Initiative The Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) is a World Bank-InfoDev initiative funded by UKaid and the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. KCIC is an incubator that supports the development and deployment of technologies that help communities to either mitigate against or adapt to climate change. Since opening its doors in September 2012, the Center has incubated 138 enterprises, 52 of which are now businesses that came in as ideas, and created 1,163 jobs through these businesses. In a bid to support Kenya’s green growth agenda, improve the pace of commercialization and scale-up of climate change-related enterprises, and thereby contribute to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country, KCIC is setting up the KCIC - Sustainability Initiative. The Initiative will also contribute to mainstreaming sustainable development in the public and private sectors in Kenya. Mission To equip decision-makers, policy makers and managers with the relevant skills to deliver institutional value through sustainable strategies, while operating in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. Vision To be the premier organization supporting the achievement of sustainable development in Africa. Partnerships for the goals The 17 SDGs were adopted by key stakeholders around the world in September 2015 with the aim of creating a better future. The 17th goal highlights partnerships as being key to advancing sustainable development. In this case concerted effort between governments, private sector, civil society and academia are required for meaningful results to be realized. The KCIC Sustainability Initiative will be launched in April 2017 in a high level event that will bring together key players from all sectors. During the event, findings of the inaugural survey on The state of sustainability in Kenya will also be shared. Specifically, the KCIC Sustainability Initiative will drive sustainability by: • Supporting companies in their quest to be sustainable • Facilitating dialogue and collaboration between business, government, civil society and academia, to find solutions to critical sustainability challenges • Creating awareness on sustainable development issues in Kenya • Conducting regular research and having a think tank that is in touch with the reality on the ground • Providing project management services for sustainability projects Appeal for partnerships and sponsorships KCIC is appealing for stakeholder sponsorship towards the launch of the Sustainability Initiative.
