Introduction

My name is Chun-Tao Weng. I am an international student

from Taiwan. I came to the United States to pursue my

passion for graphic design and new media. I earned the BFA

at Cal State Fullerton, and I am currently pursuing the MFA

in Web New Media at the Academy of Art University. I think

this is one of the biggest challenges in my life. I am a hard-

working person and I believe I can handle and face all prob-

lems. I always believe that life is short. Everyone’s life should

be beautiful and varied. We should try to experience differ-

ent things in our life, such as making friends who come from

many countries, learning other languages and trying to

understand different cultures around the world. These things

can make our life more abundant.

I have been interested in multimedia design for several

years. It is my dream to work in the new media field. After

graduating from Cal State Fullerton, I became a graphic

designer. I have one year working experience in this field. I

can always satisfy my clients and design the website that

they want, but there are still lots of skills I need to learn,

especially UI and UX principles.

I design websites in Flash. I can create vivid, colorful and

dynamic web pages to attract the viewer, but the usability

and accessibility of my websites is not as good as my visual

design. I want to learn more possiblities to help users use

websites easily and efficiently.

As I mentioned, I got a job designing websites after college.

With the knowledge I gained, I developed a special interest

in Visual Design and Web Design. However, I still feel I have a

lack of knowledge while I am going deeper into my work.

That is the reason I am pushing myself to receive formal

training in web design programs. I believe that studying at the

Academy of Art University will provide me with knowledge.

After finishing my studies, my plan is to become a UX

Designer. After that I will go back to Taiwan to encourage

interest in my field among my countrymen.

Music, design and technology are definitely three of the most

important things in my life. I learned how to play guitar in

junior high school, and since then, I developed a love for

music. I still play my guitar when I have free time. Music also

brings several advantages to me such as making friends who

have the same passion, and it helps me focus when I’m

studying other subjects.

I received the Bachelor of Art degree in graphic design from

Cal State Fullerton. Now, I am majoring in New Media at the

Academy of Art University for my master’s degree. Since

graphic design is another one of my favorite things, I decided

to combine music and design for my thesis. In addition to

doing well in school, I also want to use all my resources and

knowledge to create a project that is meaningful and useful

to people.

Project Abstract

Kazooble is an interactive and educational application to

teach kids about world music. It is a new interactive iPad app

which aims at motivating kids to learn music. It also helps kids

to learn songs from different countries. The goal of Kazooble

is to provide kids with an interesting and enjoyable way to

learn and experience world music.

In this application project, I thoroughly researched my target

audiences who want to learn, play and sing different kinds of

music. What features do they really need? What kinds of

affordances do they need? And what is the other important

information for my target audience? I objectively analyzed

these crucial factors and how my application can best serve

my users. Moreover, I studied software related to web

applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator and coding

languages like HTML5, Java Script and CSS.

This project is not just a thesis project for me - it is an

educational experience and a challenge. During the process

of developing this project, I studied user experience and

interaction to make my project stronger. These skills will be

good for my career after I graduate from school. I believe

that after launching this application, many people will enjoy

an unforgettable world music tour on their iPads.

This project is an interactive application for people who

are interested in different kinds of music. This application

is specially designed for kids, but it is also for people who

are kids at hear t. The application star ts by providing users

with various countries to explore. Within each country,

Kazooble introduces educational infomation and interac-

tive experiences for the user. This app is educational and

fun for the whole family.

KAZOOBLE IS EDUCATIONAL AND FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY.

Device Research

The iPad sparked a revolution in children's culture. Accord-

ing to the research by Nielsen, 70% of tablet owning house-

holds with children under 12 say their kids use the device.

Kids learn to read, write and count on iPads. They watch TV,

movies and cartoons as well. They play games and even color

in virtual coloring books.

By the time these kids reach middle school, they have been

using multitouch user interfaces for a total of eight years or

more. The iPad platform proves irresistible to everyone:

parents, content providers, and especially the kids themselves.

Music Research

Kids love songs and nursery rhymes. The words are usually

simple and easy to memorize. The rhyme of the music helps

children to learn the song without much effort. For children,

the easiest way to learn any foreign language is through

learning the songs and nursery rhymes. Therefore, I chose

China, Italy, Kenya and USA to show the variety of the music.

Future versions will introduce more music styles, instru-

ments and songs to the user.
