Music Video Analysis
Katy Perry - RoarStyle; performance, narrative, mixture, cameo
- There is a narrative – Katy showing everyone/animals that she is boss- Performance – parts where Katy sings to the camera- Reminiscent of old films at the start (Tarzan)- Equilibrium (bad relationship) -> plane crash (boyfriend eaten) -> journey to become empowered -> new equilibrium (happy and strong)
Camera;shots, angles, shot length, movement
- Medium shots – mainly when singing and when she was washing etc- Long shots – jungle scene with fireflies- Close ups – singing- Wide shot – Katy in the middle with animals around her- Point of view – boyfriend taking selfie (self centred)- High point of view – she is powerful and superior - Short shots- Move around Katy – she is in charge
Editing;pace, cutting, special effects
- Fast pace editing - Longer shot when on Katy and the fireflies- Cutting in time with music- 2 shot – Katy and tiger – she roars at the tiger, tiger comes out Katy has achieved
independence - Fades to show night time and passing of time- Burns through animation into real jungle – pyrotechnics- Shot reverse shot – in cave waking up and realising she is strong – comes out in leopard
print bikini- Shot reverse shot – Katy and the tiger – Roar off
Sound;diegetic, non-diegetic
- Roaring of the tiger – non diegetic- Jungle animal noises – diegetic – bugs, insect, tiger, monkey etc- Rustling of leaves as Katy runs through – Diegetic
Katy Perry - RoarMise en scene; Costume, lighting, acting, make up, props, setting, colour
- Dull and dark at the beginning – gets brighter as she gets empowered- Fireflies – magic, hope, make a tiger head together like guardian spirit- Safari/Jungle colours – green, musky colours, grey- At start angry, scared and awkward – at the end more confident- At the end Katy is more lively, she is smiling and much happier - At the start, end and a little section in the middle is animated- At the end Katy is a strong and passionate woman not someone who can be walked over- Flower and fruit head dress – connotation of becoming a queen – she is alpha- Colours reflect personality – playful, strong, sexy side - Safari shirt – animal print – sense of belonging- Grass skirts - After break up costume is dull and boring- After empowerment more colour and revealing - Makes clothing herself- Tiger wears collar as though Katy has tamed it like a pet- More empowerment – more free – she wears less- Resourceful connotation – fruit used for make up- Makes spear – equips herself
Representation - Woman at beginning gets bossed around and doesn’t stand up for herself – goes with stereo type of women being weaker
- Then she starts to become empowered and stands up for herself going against animals showing them she is in charge - goes against stereotype, strong, animal like
- Man is vain taking selfies – he is self centred, going against stereo types, ‘girly’ pose- Contradiction – more empowered she gets the less clothes she wears – becomes something to
gaze at – still and object
Message - Break up – phone crash analogy – boy friend being eaten and Katy being abandoned -> contradictions – relationship ended badly, felt frightened because she is on her own -> she is waken and realises that she is better off without him
