The conventions of Katy Perry’s- Part of Me

By Katie Dring

Page 2: Katy perry part of me

1)The music video starts with a close up of Katy’s face. She seems

to be looking at an object in her hands. Katy looks emotional which is a traditional representation of a

woman.

2) The video then cuts to a close up of a heart shaped necklace which Katy is holding. We can clearly see that the necklace is heart shaped which suggest that the video is

about love. We can also see a picture of Katy and a male character in the

locket which suggest that her ‘boyfriend’ had given her this

necklace as a present.

3) This is a long shot. However In the left hand corner of this

shot we can see Katy staring at something in the distance.

4) (Use of eye line match) The scene then cuts to what Katy is looking at which is a mid of two characters; one female and one

male. This suggest to the audience that the male character

is Katy’s ‘boyfriend’ and he is cheating on her. The clothing the

character is wearing is very smart which suggest that he’s at

work.

5) The camera then tracks Katy as we see her storm into the work

place. The clothing Katy is wearing is very modern and girly.

Also the use of the colour pink which is stereotypically known as

a feminine /girly colour

6) We then see an over the shoulder two shot where we are

introduced to the male character. The male character is wearing blue which is stereotypically known as a masculine colour.

Also the camera position in this shot makes the male look bigger

and more powerful than Katy which is a traditional

representation of a male.

7) (The song only just starts) The shot then jump cuts to Katy driving away which relates to the lyrics of the song “Days like this I want to drive away” In this shot we can clearly see the emotion on Katy’s face which is traditional representation of a female as she look vulnerable and weak.

8) We see Katy cutting her hair into a short masculine bob which

is a modernrepresentation of a women. The

use of negative space in this shot makes the audience pay more attention to what Katy is doing. This could suggest that this shot is a key part of the

storyline.

9) Again we see Katy cutting off her hair however at a different angle/shot type. This is an over the shoulder shot where we can see the emotion on Katy’s face.

This is a traditional representation of woman as she is seen as being

weak and vulnerable. We see emotion on Katy’s face as it is

stereotypically known that hair is known as a ‘treasure’ for woman and she is upset about losing a

part of her.

10) In this close up we can see Katy ‘s face which looks focused

and determined. The use of negative space in this shot,

again brings attention to Katy and her features. In this shot

Katy looks powerful and strong which is a modern

representation of a woman. The use of costume in this shot is in complete contrast to what we see at the start of the video.

Instead Katy looks very masculine which suggest tot the

audience she's a changed woman.

11) This is a two shot however the use of lighting brings the attention to Katy. In this shot

Katy look vulnerable and emotional which is a traditional

representation of a woman. However in comparison we see

Katy dressed in masculine clothing which is a modern

image of a woman.

12) (use of flashback) In this shot we see Katy happy and having fun at a carnival with her boyfriend(ex). The use of bright colours and lights are the common conventions we normally see in pop music videos.

Page 4: Katy perry part of me

13) The shot then jump cuts to current day activity and shows a near exact same scene as the previous flashback; except Katy is in the army. The costumes are in complete contrast, as in this shot we see Katy in masculine clothing and in the previous we saw her in feminine. Clothing. This could suggest to the audience that Katy has grown as an individual and has learn from her mistakes and has effectively become a more powerful and stronger individual.

14) This is a low angled mid shot. The use of a low angle makes the characters look

powerful and strong which is a modern representation of a

woman. Again the clothing is masculine and the woman's facial expressions are very determined and defined.

15) This is an over the shoulder close up. The individual on the

left has been blurred out therefore effectively making the audience focus on the letter. The

letter suggest that Katy’s ex boyfriend is sorry for his

‘mistake’ and wants her back.

16) Following from the previous shot we see Katy burning the letter

which suggest that she hasn’t forgiven her ex for what he’s done. However this shot represents power as it shows that Katy has become a stronger individual and she doesn’t have feelings for her ex anymore. This is modern representation of a

woman.

17) Again we see the use of a flashback. In the close up on the left Katy is being presented as ‘girly girl’ as she has a stylish hair style and is having a bubble bath. The mid shot on the right its in complete comparison to the shot on the left as Katy and the other characters are dressed in military clothing which is very masculine. As the military is stereotyped as being a ‘ manly’ thing. This presents Katy as a strong and independent individual which is a modern representation of a woman.
