Shape&PatternGiraffes

1st Grade Lesson

In this lesson 1st grade students explore concepts of shape and pattern in creating one of a kind watercolorgiraffes.Theyoungartistsdesigntheirown patterns by exploring pattern through color and shapes such as triangles, circles, rectangles, and organic forms.

2nd Grade LessonThe Story of Us: Big Moments

Young artists explore the concept of a climactic moment through storytelling in this student-centered lesson. The concept of a climactic moment is introduced in a discussion of art-works that capture big moments, and reinforced by a Visual Thinking Strategies discussion at the local art museum.

Students then brainstorm their own big moments during their lifetime and depict these memories through artwork using their choice of several artistic mediums.

5th Grade LessonStory AnimalsThis 5th grade scupltural lesson was inspired by the American sculpture artist Brian Andreas and his series of Story People. Students discussed the artist’sworkandhischoicestousereclaimedwoodashismediumand abstraction as a theme.

In preparation of creating their own reclaimed wood sculptures, students aranged abstract and geometric shapes to create new objects. Students then selected three abstract reclaimed wood pieces from a box and arranged them to create an animal scuplture.Afterpaintinganddecoratingthesculpture,studentswroteasmallmoment story on the surface and shared it with the class.

6th Grade LessonExploring the World of Watercolor

Sixth grade students explore watercolor techniques and the meaning of meal traditionsinthisfoodillustrationunit.Afterexploringthehistoryofillustrationand the role it plays in visual culture, students experiment with eight watercolor techniques while creating a watercolor sampler.

Afterconsideringmealtraditionssharedwithfamilyandfriends,studentsselectone tradition to depict in a mixed media watercolor illustration. Students then lookcloselyattheirchosenfoodtohypothesizewhichtechniqueswillproducethe desired aestehtics.

Once the illustration is finished, students describe their work in the form of a brief artist statement, telling the story behind their tradition and artistic choices.

8th Grade LessonCapturing Art History through Collaboration

Eighth grade students study art history from a personal perspective in this collaborative unit. For the purposes of this project, the class is broken down into teams of four or five students to create small cooperative learning environments.Eachteamisresponsiblefor(re)creating a well-known work of art from history.

Students will be introduced to this concept by examining ways in which artists have recreated famous works of art throughout history, including the “70 Mil-lion” by Hold Your Horses music video.

Afterselectingaworkofarttorecreate,teamswilltogetherdecideonrolesforeach member of the team: props director, photographer, model, etc. Each team will create a unique recreation of the original work of art, and give a class presentation on the deepened understanding of the work of art and its significance.

Identity Quilt

9th Grade Lesson

In this unit students celebrate both the individual and the collective, high-lightingeachartist’suniquedifferenc-es as well as their power as a whole.

Students create their individual quilt-ing block using oragami paper and scissors.

Ninth grade students are asked to consider what makes up their identity, creating silhouette images representative of the self, community, interests, and any other pieces infor-mation relevant to them as an indi-vidual.

11th Grade LessonThe Art of Sound

In this unit designed for at-risk teens, students explore the art of sound, the in-tersection of the world of art and music.

Students first explore this concept by viewing and discussing album covers and the ways in which the artists have (orhavenot)successfullydepictedthemusic. The artists explore visual rythm, movement, typography, mood in critiquing the covers and considering their own favorite musicians.

Afterbrainstormingthemoodandaesthetic of their favorite music artists, students carve a lineoleum printmaking block from their sketch, and print an edition of album covers, as well as a series of unique prints.
